Chapter Nineteen
Becky made her way to work on Sunday. She hoped Rob wasn't on the same shift because she didn't know what to say or do. Best to ignore him.
He was there of course. She sat with Jan in her break hoping he wouldn't come into the staff room.
"What's up with you?" Jan peered at her from across the table. "You look sick."
"Yeah." Becky grinned. "I went to a party last night." She brightened her expression, chuckled and waved her hand in front of her face. "It was so...much fun."
"Ah... why didn't you take me? You're always going to parties." Jan pouted. Her eyes lit up. "Was Rob there? Did you hook up?"
"Jan... ugh! You know I hate him." Becky laughed. "I hooked up though."
Jan's eyes widened as she flung forward to lean on the table with her forearms. "Who with?"
Becky winked and laughed some more. "Not telling names but, a boy from my school." She cocked her head and screwed up her face. "You wouldn't know him anyway." Becky twisted sideways on her chair and bent to tie her shoelace. A pair of size elevens stepped in front of her. She looked up.
"You and I need to talk."
Why couldn't he just leave her alone? She ignored him, sat up, turned to the front, and took a mouthful from her water bottle.
"Becky."
She stood up taking her bottle with her and turned up her nose at him. "Don't you mean Lizzy?" Becky moved off leaving Rob looking after her.
"Hi, Rob." Jan beamed and waved her hand as she jiggled on her seat.
Rob sighed. "Hi." He followed Becky out through the door. She was talking to a customer. He let out another breath and headed back to the paint counter.
At the end of his shift, Rob waited in his car. Becky had started an hour after him so he figured she'd finish an hour later. He knew he'd stuffed up the night before. He hadn't intended to kiss her. Had only wanted to stop her from being used by Jones and had wanted to talk to her about Linc.
Rob sighed as he thought about how the night had ended. He'd made the biggest prick of himself two days in a row but, calling her Lizzy was probably a hanging offense. Rob moved the car seat back, slid down, closed his eyes, and rested his head against the vinyl. He couldn't help smiling. Becky Bridgestone's body felt so good against his. When she'd kissed him and put her arms around his neck and her hands in his hair he'd wanted so much more. Rob felt his penis jerk. He laughed and pushed his palm against it.
What was he going to do about her? She already hated him but now she must loathe him. First things first. He had to get Linc sorted.
He watched her come out of the store and walk across the car park towards the bus stop. Rob jumped out of his car and ran after her. When he caught up with her, he took hold of her hand to stop her from walking. "I need to talk to you."
She jerked her hand away and peered at him. "Can you please leave me alone?"
"I'm sorry." Rob felt like a stalker. He put his hands on his hips. "Look I'm really sorry I did that to you last night and I'm sorry I said that shit on Friday."
"Okay, now leave me alone." Becky went to step around him. Her bus pulled up. He grabbed her upper arm. She tried to shake it off as she snapped, "You're going to make me miss my bus."
"I'll drive you home."
Becky pushed at his hand and drew her arm from his hold. "I'd rather catch the bus." She took a step toward it. He grabbed her again.
"I really need to talk to you about Linc." Rob sighed. "I've waited an hour."
"Not my problem." Becky tried to pull away again but he held on. The bus drove away. She hung her head. Why wouldn't he just leave her alone. Becky bit back tears as she said, "Can you please let me go because I have to start walking now?"
"Why are you so stubborn? I said I'd drive you home." He sighed because she wouldn't look up. Rob's mouth went into overdrive. He had to get out what he needed to say. "I know you hate me. You have every right to hate me. I didn't mean for last night to happen but you keep making out you're a slut and talking shit. What was I supposed to do? I wanted to stop you being used by Jones and talk to you about Linc. I'm sorry I called you Lizzy. I don't know why I did because you are nothing like her."
Once he finished speaking he moved off taking Becky with him. Rob thought about last night and why he had done it. He'd wanted to push the boundary with her. To see how far she'd go because he wanted the real Becky to show herself. He didn't think she'd go through with it because she'd tensed as soon as he'd touched her intimately. She'd felt so good. Something told him she wasn't the slut she wanted everyone to think she was. As he dragged her behind him he said, "Why do you make out you're a slut?"
"I am a slut." Becky gasped as he pulled her along. She felt completely drained of all energy and did have it in her to fight against him.
"No you're not." Rob chuckled. "If you were a slut you wouldn't have iced up on me and I haven't found one guy who's actually had sex with you."
"You don't know anything." Becky wiped her face with her free hand and tried to pull out of his hold but Rob held tighter. He opened the passenger side door and gently pushed her onto the seat. When he got in the driver's side and went to turn on the key, she stopped him.
"Don't start the car. If you want to talk about Linc you have to do it here."
"Okay." Rob leaned back and folded his arms. "I've been trying to talk to you all week."
"So all that business last night was you wanting to talk to me about my brother?"
Rob grinned. "Mostly."
"What's that supposed to mean." Becky faced him.
"You've pissed me off no end. Right from my first day." Rob pinned her with his eyes. "Trying to talk to you is impossible so I thought I'd see how far you'd go because of all the shit you go on with." He smiled as he finished speaking.
Becky drew in a breath. She wished he wouldn't do that. It made it so much harder to hate him. She huffed and said, "If it was someone else I would have gone all the way but I hate you so you can go and jerk off." She put her hand on the handle to open the car door.
"No you don't." Rob took hold of her arm.
"Yes I do."
Rob laughed. "Not what I meant. I mean, no you don't leave this car until I've talked to you about Linc. I already said I don't care if you hate me."
Becky bit on her inner lip. He didn't care. She sighed because that thought hurt, and then muttered, "What about Linc?"
"I want to know what his exercises are. I need you to give me a copy of what the physio has for him. I want to take him swimming and you have to be there."
"Why?" Becky sat up straighter and looked at him. "Why do I have to be there?"
"I can't be his coach and be alone with him. It's just a safety issue any teacher, blue cardholder, or coach has to be aware of so I need you to be there. I want to work with him in the pool because I think it'll work wonders for his leg. Can he swim?" He studied her face as he said, "Did the physio do any water exercises with him?"
"No."
Rob cocked his head. "No the physio didn't or no he can't swim or no you're not going to let me work with him in the pool and be there too."
"Yes he can swim." Becky folded her arms. "Well he could but I suppose he might struggle a bit now and no the physio didn't do stuff with him in a pool." She huffed and rolled her eyes at him. "When do you plan to do the swimming thing?"
"Maybe Tuesday after my training or Friday after school. I could do Saturday mornings. I'll try and work in with what suits you."
"Tuesday's are no good." Becky frowned. "You all go to the café after training."
"I don't care about hanging at the café."
"If you do Tuesdays that means I miss out too," she complained.
"Becky." Rob eyed her. "Your brother is more important than pretending you're a slut."
"I am a slut." She smirked.
"If you're a slut I'll take my shirt off and we can finish what I started last night." Rob cocked his head and raised his eyebrows.
Becky quickly looked out the window and uttered, "I hate you remember."
Rob chuckled, "I remember."
Becky watched him laugh in the reflection of the glass. She wondered how she was going to keep him at a distance because she didn't feel as much hate for him as she had. She looked back at him, turned up her nose and put on a bitchy voice, "So what day do you want to start?"
"Tuesday. Wait for me in the grandstand and we'll use the school pool. I'll organize it with Mr. Creally. I'm sure he won't mind."
She turned to the front and pulled on her seatbelt. "Fine. Take me to Macca's and drop me there and don't you ever call me Lizzy again."
Becky climbed out of his car. She closed the door, put her hands on the window edge and leaned in. She glance at Rob. "Just so you know. This stuff with Linc doesn't give you the right to talk to me. I'm doing it for my brother. I'll sit there but we are not friends."
Rob clenched his teeth. A ball of anger fired in his gut. "Fine by me. Lizzy." He dropped the clutch and took off.
