A rather unfortunate train ride
I sat in the second to last compartment on the hogwarts express, drawing little designs in the foggy glass. It was a rather rainy day, really gloomy for the first day of school when you think about it.
Letting out a rather long sigh, I wiped back my black curly hair turning my attention the compartment doors. Lo and behold my foster brother was making his way in, it was funny watching him struggle to open the door. He had at least 7 different kinds of sweets bundled in his arms. On top of that there was chocolate smudged all over his tanned face, a smile on his lips as usual. Promptly, he sat across from me, laying out his candies beside him, popping a pepper imp into his mouth.
"Elk, you have something on your face." I chuckled lazily, mirroring on my face where the mess was.
"Do I?" Elk laughed back, using his jacket sleeve to wipe his mouth thoroughly. We laughed for a second more before settling back down into the atmosphere. "So, first year of Hogwarts! You must be excited!" The third year patted my knee.
"I guess, I mean with the recent news of that Sirius Black guy escaping, it'll make for an eventful year!" I smiled halfheartedly.
Something about that sentence made Elk change expression drastically, literally going from his usual chipper mood to a secretive face. "Definitely." He laughed nervously.
"Your hiding something... what's wrong?" I forgot to mention but one of my few talents includes being able to read people like a book, I get it from my birth mom. It's a shame that she's now a resident of azkaban, but it's what you get for almost killing your friends and child.
"Nothing, just a little scared of that guy, he did kill wizards after all right?" Elk chuckled nervously.
I decided to believe him, backing away from the topic and back to staring out the rainy window.
"Here's a first year spell for you." Elk tried to make better conversation. My attention snapped to him as he grabbed a box of pepper imps. He cleared his throat and recited the words "Wingardium Leviosa!" He flicked his wand and with that, the imps started to float in the air.
I was almost dazzled by the spell, I tapped a hand on the box, causing it to spin into the compartment wall. I smiled lightly, looking to Elk who was plucking pepper imps from the air and popping them in his mouth. Elk and I were best friend brothers, BFBs if you will. He is really kind and a big goof ball, ladies love him. From what he's told me though, women aren't exactly his cup of tea if you get what I mean.
Anyways, besides Elk, I live with at least two other children, all of them are really different. The oldest, Birch Byrd, really thick skull and in slytherin, rather fitting. The second oldest is Elk Byrd, he's a gryffindor, as told previously a sweetheart. Me, Wednesday Black-Byrd, houseless and dashing good looks. Finally, the youngest of the bunch, Ivy a deathly adorable little girl who will be attending hogwarts next year. Their mother is Autumn Byrd, a really kind woman working on adopting me how ever it's rather hard seeing as she already has four kids. She insists I call her mom but I feel I don't deserve that right just yet, so I call her Miss Byrd.
I came out of my thoughts to a girl entering out compartment, she had lovely brown hair and dazzling blue eyes. She wore a wool cap and knit gauntlet type gloves that matched her long flowing sweater. "Mind if I take a seat?" She spoke shyly. She seemed to be a first year like me.
"Not at all." Elk scooted his sweets aside, grabbing one of the chocolate frogs and offering it to her. "Chocolate frog?"
A light pink tinge was on her cheeks as she shakily grabbed the frog and sat next to Elk, nodding slightly. "So, what is this wizard school deal?" She spoke softly.
Elk and I shared a look, she was a muggle born, funny how that happens, two pure bloods and a muggle born in a compartment, sharing sweets. "Yep, you know basic magic yet?" I spoke up.
"I'm afraid not, see, I'm from america if you couldn't tell and my parents recently moved here with me... Bottom line is I'm new to the whole wizardry and Britain thing." She sighed grumpily.
"Then how did you get supplies?" Elk asked nervously.
"Well, my parents just said 'Screw it' and took me to the nearest office supply store and then the pet store." She chuckled awkwardly.
"So in other words, you brought a ton of muggle devices to a wizarding school?" I tried to stifle my laughter but it was very challenging.
"Yes... I have pens instead of quills and notebooks instead of parchment and and..." She rambled on. With each item she listed, she seemed to get closer to a panic attack.
"Calm down.... what's your name?" Elk tilted his head slightly, glancing over to me for a second.
"Delilah Crane, my friends call me Dill." Delilah cautiously opened the boxed chocolate frog Elk gave her. Quickly it leaped out but she caught it, immediately biting the head off making the frog go limp.
"Well, Delilah do you at least have a wand, and where did you learn that from?" I looked at her a little scared.
"Yes, and well, a third year with grey hair taught me that." She giggled, swallowing the frogs head and putting it back in the box. Quickly she pulled out her wand, placing the frog in her bag. "I have to go meet up with her speaking of, she has something she needs to talk about." Delilah stood up, a smile on her face. "Lovely meeting you!" and with that she left.
"Interesting girl." Elk chuckled after she left the car. He turned back to me, his wand back out in his hand. "Want to see another spell?"
"Sure why not--" I was suddenly cut off by a shortage of power, everything went cold and so did my blood. I looked to Elk, but I couldn't see him, it was far to dark to see anything.
"Lumos!" I heard him whisper as the tip of his wand lit up with ease.
Something told me to follow after him so I did, I quickly pulled my wand from my pocket and muttered the spell. With a swish and flick of my wand, a very dull light flickered at the tip of my wand slowly becoming more prominent. Elk smiled at me for a second, he seemed proud of me.
"I'm going to find Birch, stay here, don't move, and scream if something bad happens." With that Elk left the compartment and ran down the hall to where Birch was.
I sat in inky blackness with only a flicker of light to see things with, it was like a scene out of a muggle horror film. My breath clouded out in front of me as I waited for my brother's return. Just as I was about to go look for him myself, a feeling of dread flooded me. I looked through the glass door to be greeted with a ghastly sight.
I had heard about them but I had never seen one in person, they plagued my dreams sure but those were dreams not reality. I fumbled for my wand and held it out in front of me, I didn't know any spells to protect me but I wanted to look like I did. I fell onto my knees as the creature approached me. Tears slid down my cheeks and my eyelids grew heavy as it reached out for me, why was it after me? I fainted before it could do anything, just out of sheer panic, I had fainted. As I faded into nothingness, I felt its presence leave and heard my name being called softly in the distance.
"Wednesday!"
"Wednesday!"
"Wednesd..."
