7. The Hiss

      Bit short, only 693 words.

It had been months more of the lapse, and I was running out of time. How my stomach swelled, and how it ever so hurt to walk - even breathe did a little pinch to the stomach.
I knew that I had mere weeks until I ran out of time.

I had to escape, now or never.

And I saw my chance.
The day started as usual - wind howling, pups playing and chat of war stories droning all around camp.
Until a cry came out, a faraway cry of war.

And, all of a sudden, I had a chance.
Chaos erupted in camp as the enemy lines drew nearer to camp, everyone scurrying to protect everyone, all, as usual, forgetting about the hidden she-wolf in the cave.

So, I walked out, grabbed a piece of meat and struggled my way over to the border.....

........

It had been hours of struggle, and the bright City Of Light was about to sink over the horizon mountains as I staggered into The Meeting Place.
I saw him there immediately, waiting, as his face lit up.
Mine must have too, and the next moment we were rushing over to each other - for once I didn't care which side my feet landed as he wrapped his paws around me, sniffling in tears.
All of a sudden he pulled away and went back to his side of the river, leaving me shocked.

"Wait - Mahogany! We can still do it! I'm—"

He didn't even bother to glance at me as he went to his side, sitting away from me.

"I'm sorry, Hikoshi... I was wrong, we shouldn't be together."

A rustle came from the rock, but I ignored it.

"Come on Mahogany, this is our chance to leave and make a life together. I want to-"

He turned back towards me suddenly glaring into my eyes with a sudden furiously.
"No, you don't! You want to do that for me, you left me for him!"

The rustle happened again as we both glanced at the bush. Mahogany just looked away and sighed.
As I looked again I caught the shadow of two, big green glaring eyes.

Trivolep — he followed me here.
My heart beat faster as I tried not to panic.

How much had he heard?
It was clear that the only way to get out of this was to pretend to dislike Mahogany.
A last resort.

I growled and snapped my heard to Mahogany.
"Well, can you stop being such a jerk then?"
I stuttered.

It was fake, but his anger blinded him to my obvious uncomfortable posture and weary glances.
He was oblivious to it.

"Well you left ME for that fool Trivolep you've told me oh, so much about!"

"I didn't- it's not like -"

"It's not? You know, I liked you once! I liked you quite a lot - I offered my life for you, and you throw it away like garbage. Now you come crawling back like I'm- like I'm something now!"

"You idiot!" I hissed, feeling a rising anger unleashing. "Your blind to the truth, why would I go with you?! It's not like I liked you in the first place, you worthless—"

He gasped, realizing what he had started.
"No no no no, I didn't mean it, now a word-"

"Sure, you traitor! You hated me, and you meant. EVERY. WORD!"
I leaped over the stones on the river and slashed his cheek with my claws, drawing blood as I hissed.
"You want to make me happy - don't come back, don't ever see me again!"

He looked at each of my eyes slowly, sighing in defeat and leaving, rushing away.

...

I stood there, panting as I began to comprehend what I had done.
This was my fault.
His blood was on my paw.

Trivolep walked up to me, but I didn't see.

A hiss went in and out of my scull, but I didn't hear.

A touch flared through my shoulder, but I didn't feel it, as it felt as if my spirit had left me.

I felt nothing.
I felt hollow.

......
An echo.

A hiss.

A praise.

"Well done..."
