To encapsulate an entire novel into one word is not easy. 'Mismatched' rolls off your tongue without trouble and satisfies the plot. That being said, the title isn't unique. Identity and discoverability might become an issue.
The book cover is cute. A forehead kiss is said to indicate adoration, care, and respect, and I think the picture of the couple is fitting for the book. But, I'm not a fan of the font nor the colour. The pink and blue conflict with each other and they don't harmonise with the slight purplish tint of the picture either.
The blurb has enough information to hook the readers. However, I felt certain phrasing can be a little confusing (specifically, after talking about her aunt and back to herself). Otherwise, it's an ideal well-written blurb for a chick-lit romance.
The first chapter sets the tone and plot for the whole book, and established Jake's character. The opening paragraph showcased his character and his perspective on fortune-telling. There's an inner conflict, but he believes enough to come back to the reading sessions.
Jake is a conflicted personality yet in an interesting way. He's also a bit of a charmer and a flirt. The heroine — Ebony shares the same level of skepticism as Jake on fortune-telling, if not more. Their first exchange is entertaining, to say the least, and there's a natural chemistry between the two. It's also clear the two individuals have been through a lot and have an interesting history which I hope will be unraveled slowly.
Mrs. Harrostone, the fortune teller, has a mysterious aura that is fitting and makes her character that much more intriguing.
The writing style is chill yet fascinating with sprinkled humour and picturesque descriptions. There's a good balance of show vs tell, and the author has a knack for distributing information without making it seem like an info dump. Kudos to you!
Each chapter leaves the reader craving for more. If anything, I felt 'Mismatched' is a good, promising read. Keep writing!
