Chapter 2 She's Smoke

Lyric ran possibly the fastest she ever had in her entire life through the emergency room until she saw Symphony being rolled out of a room on a bed.
"Hey! Wait!" Lyric shouted and started following. A nurse stopped her.
"Ma'am you can't follow us."
"The hell I can't!" Lyric said. "I'm her mother!"
"I'm going to need you to calm down and I will explain what is happening." The nurse said.
"Start talking!" Lyric nearly screamed.
"Your daughters appendix has ruptured. We are taking her back for surgery to remove the appendix and clean out any infection. If you will go out into the waiting room someone will be out to speak with you shortly."
"I..can't see her?" Lyric asked with tears in her eyes.
"We don't have time She needs surgery now." The nurse said walking away as Symphony was rolled back into another room leaving Lyric feeling helpless.
She walked back out to the waiting room where Tink, Jefferson and Victor were waiting.
"I..I'm so sorry Lyric I should have known." Victor said.
"No, Vic its not your fault." Lyric said and gave him a hug. "How..bad is this?" She asked.
"It could have been much worse." Victor explained. "I figured out something was wrong before it got too bad. Basically her appendix tore and was leaking fluid into the rest of her abdomen."
"Christ.." Lyric sighed. "I knew something was wrong, in the back of my mind I knew but I still left." She said and sat down with her head in her hands.
"Its not your fault either Lyric." Tink said and put her hand on her friends shoulder. "The doctor said the surgery would be simple and that the infection hadn't gone very far."
"She'll be fine." Victor assured her. Lyric felt a little more at ease but her nerves were shot. Between Killian showing up, and kissing her like that like he had never left in the first place and now this.. Lyric just wanted to crawl into a ball in the corner of the room and cry.
"Hey, why don't you two go get us something to eat? It will be a while.." Tink said to Victor and Jefferson.
"Sure." Victor nodded and he and Jefferson walked away.
Tink turned to Lyric.
"Are you okay?" She asked.
"I saw him." Lyric replied.
"Who?" Tink asked.
"Killian." Lyric said quietly as if speaking his name would doom them all.
"What? Hes here??" Tink exclaimed.
"Yeah. He was singing at the bar tonight. And.. I made him a drink, and all of a sudden I was in the bathroom and then he was there and it was like we never broke up at all." Lyrics eyes welled. "Like he never broke my heart. It was that easy. All he had to do was kiss me."
"But you did break up, and he did break your heart Lyric. You have to remember that."
"I do. Now. But then? I was gone. I was his and it made me realize that I was never not his. I never moved on. As much as I tried to forget him, and erase him...." Lyric took a shaky breath. "And it scares the hell out of me."
Tink pulled her best friend close hugging her tightly not knowing what to say at this point.

----------------------------------------------------------

Symphony's surgery had gone well and she was home now. The doctor gave Lyric an estimate of two week recovery period. Right now she was sleeping. Lyrics father was coming out for a few days to help her because Lyric's boss was an asshole and told her she'd be fired if she missed work again even for this and Lyric could not afford to lose the job with both her and Tink working, they were barely scraping by as is.
Lyric answered the door as the doorbell rang and grinned.
"Dad! You're early! I didn't expect you until tomorrow." She beamed and threw her arms around her father.
Darren hugged her tightly.
"Yeah well, I was going to wait but I figured you needed me as soon as possible so you could go to work." he replied.
"Oh, Tink was going to watch her tonight. She works mornings and really all shes been doing is sleeping, poor kid." Lyric frowned.
"She'll get better. You had yours out when you weren't much older than she is. Your grandfather was watching you that night. Its the only time I've seen that man panic."
"I'm surprised he didn't just tell me to walk it off.." Lyric muttered.
Darren sighed. "I know the man is difficult Lyric but your grandfather doesn't hate you."
"He hasn't spoken to me in nearly 4 years Dad. Even at holidays he doesn't say a word." Lyric sighed and walked to the kitchen to start the coffee maker.
"Wait... no. you were up all night and you have to work tonight. You go get some rest."
"Dad really I am fine." Lyric said.
"Lyric McKenna put the coffee down and go to bed!" Darren said. Lyric put her hands on her hips.
"I am almost 23 years old. If I want a cup of coffee, in my apartment I will do so."
Darren crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes. Lyric hated that look she could be 50 and that look would still strike fear into her soul.
"Fine." She sighed. "I will take a power nap. Sym is in her room, she gets more antibiotics in an hour and if shes hurting cut the pain pill in half and then half again and give it to her and if she has a fe-"
"Motrin. Got it, Lyric this isn't my first rodeo." Darren smirked. "If I could handle you, I can handle your mini me."
More like Killian's Mini me. Lyric thought as she strolled into her room. Symphony not only looked just like a little girl version of Killian, She had much of his personality too.
Lyric didn't even bother to change her clothes she was exhausted she plopped down on the bed and fell asleep almost as soon as her head hit the pillow.

------------------------------------------------------------

It was a pretty slow night at the bar, Lyric was closing and there was basically no one so her boss left and told her she could lock up around 1 and call it a night. So Lyric was wiping down counters and putting up stools.
"You still open?"
Lyric spun around and dropped the shot glass in her hand and it shattered on the floor.
"Shit.." She sighed and bent down with a towel to pick up the broken glass. "Killian." She mumbled.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you love." Killian said and walked over helping her pick up the broken glass.
"I got it.." She said and picked it up in the towel and walked over to the trash can tossing it in.
"I was closing up. What do you want?" She asked.
"I wanted to see if you were okay." Killian said.
"No, Killian. I'm not okay. You can't just show up like this."
"I'm sorry." Killian said.
"Sorry for what? Sorry for breaking up with me out of fucking nowhere? Sorry for not only breaking up with me, but shoving me to the floor when I begged you to stay? Or are you sorry that you decide four fucking years later that you missed me?"
"All of the above." Killian sighed and sat down on a stool.
Lyric walked around to the other side of the bar and grabbed a couple of shot glasses and set them out. She opened a bottle of rum and filled the glasses and slid him one before downing the other.
"Your boss lets you drink on the clock?" Killian asked.
Lyric snorted. "My boss clocked me out an hour ago because I have overtime."
"Then what the hell are you still doing here?" Killian asked and threw back his shot and put the glass back down on the bar for Lyric to fill again.
"I was the only one left to close.." Lyric shrugged.
"He can't make you stay and not pay you Lyric." Killian said.
"He can if my job is threatened." Lyric mumbled and poured herself another shot and threw it back and then poured another one.
"Don't you think you should take it easy?" Killian asked.
Lyric just glared at him.
"I'm going to lock the door so no one else comes in." She said and grabbed her keys. Killian looked at the music notes in the shape of a heart dangling from her keyring. It was the necklace he gave her for christmas when they were together. Well the pendant anyways.
"You kept it.." He said and smiled.
"As a reminder." Lyric said and walked to the door and turned the lock before walking back to the bar and pouring another shot.
"A reminder for what?"
"To remind myself not to be stupid enough to trust someone like you again" She said.
"But you just locked yourself in a bar with me." Killian smirked.
"Its the shady side of New York. If someone tries to mug me I can just trip you and run away."
"Well, someone has turned into quite the little spitfire." Killian said taking another shot.
"I grew a backbone. Don't like it?" Lyric asked.
"It's kind of hot actually." Killian flirted.
Lyric blushed and cursed herself. She hated that he could still make her do that. Killian reached into his pocket and tossed something onto the bar. Lyric looked down at the customized guitar pick she had given him for christmas.
"Why do you still have that?"
"I don't play without it." Killian shrugged. Lyric swallowed thickly and took another shot. She was starting to feel her shoulders getting tingly now.
"You.. should probably go." She mumbled. Killian shook his head.
"I..really don't want to." He said and ran his fingers up her forearm.
"I miss you Lyric and I know you told me to stay away but after I kissed you the other night.. I can't get you out of my head and I know you felt it too. Its still there. The spark."
Lyric shook her head.
"I.. can't do this with you Killian. Not again. Not ever again." She said and walked back over to the door unlocking it and holding it open for him. Killian sighed and stood up and walked over to the door.
"Someone picking you up?" He asked. "You can't drive."
"I'm fine." Lyric said.
"There is no way I am letting you drive. I know how much you just drank."
"Okay you drank as much as I did." Lyric said.
"Aye, but my hotel room is right across the street I'm not leaving until you call to have someone pick you up."
"You have to leave. I'm kicking you out." Lyric argued and tried to physically push him out the door but he wouldn't budge.
"What the hell are you made of?" She mumbled.
"You can't even push me out the door. You aren't driving."
Lyric grumbled in frustration.
"I can't go home like this. My dad is here and I don't want a lecture."
"Why is your dad here?" Killian asked. Lyric mentally cursed herself.
"Him and mom fought. He wanted to come see me." Lyric shrugged.
"Oh.. well, why don't you just come with me. We'll order a pizza and sober up a bit and then you can drive home?" Killian asked.
Lyric was a little hungry and it was probably the alcohol talking but that sounded like a good idea.
"Just pizza?"
"Just pizza." Killian nodded in agreement.
"Fine." Lyric said and walked out the door with him and locked the bar up.
"Lead the way." She said.
