chapter 19

•••

So maybe, just maybe playing against Casper was a mistake—scratch that—a terrible, horrible, horrendous mistake. I lost seven races to him and trust me when I say that he hasn't quite forgotten about it.

It's been three days and he still mocks me because he's a fucking child and I tried not letting it get to me but alpha Casper can be very annoying when he tries. So, I've spent my day hiding from that stupid man.

"You can't run away from daddy." Javier says as I enter the kitchen.

I look around as if he could pop out from anywhere, "Where is he by the way?"

"He just left. He's been very busy lately." He passes a plate of his famous peanut butter and jelly sandwich over to me.

"You're gonna be late for your first lesson with Grandma Dakota?"

Grandma Dakota or rather, famous Oracle Dakota is former Luna Adrianna, Javier's mother's mother who I met yesterday and she's been kind to me. She is an Oracle and a witch. I confided in her about the disappearance of my wolf  and who better to help than the Oracle. So, I'm going to be training under her wing amongst other things.

I hurry up with my sandwich and down a glass of water before going outside to avoid both Sebastian and alpha Casper. Grandma Dakota lives in the estate, maybe a ten minutes walk from here.

"You're gonna turn wolf right?" Javier asks me as he visibly shakes with excitement.

I don't know how to tell him that I can't. He looks up at me with his wide eyes and I have to give his cute ass an excuse. He disappointment is very visible as his face falls.

We walk the whole ten minutes to the small cabin. Grandma Dakota is meditating a short distance from her cabin with her staff beside her. We walk towards her.

"Ready for my next lesson."

"You're late." She simply says without opening her eyes or moving a muscle. Javier is already sitting beside her with his eyes closed.

I stand there awkwardly, "Should I join you or —?"

She peeks at me with her right eye, "You can or you can just stand there and watch us."

I choose joining and sit cross-legged like them and close my eyes. After a few restless seconds, I open my them and look around.

"I can't feel you meditating." She murmurs.

"Sorry."

I try to meditate and move around for a bit. Maybe it's me but I can't, "Is this the first lesson?"

She doesn't answer me, "how long is this going to take?"

"Can we start already?"

"Javier tell Odetta to meditate and stop bothering us.", He laughs at my expense and leans forward to look at me from the left side of grandma Dakota. "Ody you need to meditate."

"Really sorry for bothering you." I apologize.

She sighs and stands up, "I like you but learn when to speak."

She picks up her staff and looks at me, "I'm going to teach you how to meditate."

"No please I can't."

"Before I will be able to teach you anything else, you must first find your inner peace."

"Inner peace?" She sighs at me and rests her chin on her hands that carefully folded on the top of her staff.

"How about I teach you meditation tomorrow but today, You and Javier will help arrange my shelf."

Oracle Dakota only has three rooms in her cabin. Her spell room, her bedroom and her bathroom. The space I suppose should be her Living room has been converted to a small library. She opens the window and lets fresh air in. They are several tall shelves, a very old table and armchair and finally, a small kitchen tucked to her side.

"Be careful with the books. They are as old as the beginning."

I pick one out and trace the foreign words on it, "It's written in the ancient tongue."

"Do you understand it?"

"Not really, My father only taught me the basics." I reply.

She doesn't say anything but she goes over to a book shelf and trace the spines of the books lined up before she picks out one. She blows on it and smiles before handing the book over to me.

"After my daughter died, there was no one to teach it to. I was going to teach young Javier when he grew older but I won't be here long."

I take the book from her and look at the book. "It's a book on how to speak the ancient tongue. It's going to help you greatly, if you're serious about wanting to learn a lot from me." She tells me and turns around to leave, "You can take it home after you've arranged my shelves and this room."

"How do I arrange the books? Is there any particular order you'd like?" I call after her.

"You decide."

"I love looking at the books." Javier says and tries to reach for one on his tippy toes. I get the book for him instead and hand it to him. He mutters a thank you before going to a corner and sitting on the floor to read. That sly fox. He's just gonna let me do this all by myself. A betrayal I fear.

I go to the first shelf and carefully bring out all the cramped books there and place them on the floor. When I successfully pulled out all the books, I sit on the floor surrounded by them.

"Now how do I do this?"

I finally get the hang of it and arrange the books by category. I put books of the same languages together, books about werewolves together, recipe books are placed together and so on. Soon enough, I'm done. I keep the book oracle Dakota gave me on the old table when I spot a book that I must have overlooked before. I flip through it since it had no name to know what category I should put it with but this book is different. It is in a mix of English and Ancient tongues. It seems to have knowledge on several supernatural creatures.

I don't know much except for Witches, Vampires and maybe a little about Mermaids. Vampires aren't extinct but they hide or blend with humans like we do and they are rare to find. Mermaids were almost extinct because of humans till they decided to hide, no one has heard or seen mermaids in over two hundred years—at least that's what my father had told me, but we do know that there are still alive. Witches went extinct after they were all hunted by humans and the rest that survived took human identities, never using their sorcery. There are no records of naturally born witches anymore, just other supernaturals that learn sorcery. Sorcery was banned to be learned by any other person except the oracles for werewolves so as to avoid abuse.

"Let's go home, it's late." Javier tells me and I look at the book contemplating if I should ask oracle Dakota for it or just leave it for another day but I decide to ask and take the book.

I see her humming to herself as she comes back with a basket full of herbs which I suppose she picked from the forest.

"We want to go and apart from the book you gave me, I would like to take this one with me." I show her the book.

She smiles before she nods, "You can take it, but do not let any harm come to this book. It is very important."

"Don't worry. I'll keep this book safe."

I take Javier's hand in my mine and we head back home together.

"Make sure you do read the books." Oracle Dakota shouts out after us.
