Every time Harper shut her eyes, she saw his. She saw his beady eyes glaring back at her, and the cunning smirk that he always wore. She hated it. She hated the way that she felt the hairs on her arms raise and the pit in her stomach grow, and even more so the fact he was still infiltrating her mind.
She saw him in every shadow. In every corner. He was everywhere, and Harper had no escape, not even in her dreams. She was scared of seeing him even when it came time for her to sleep, she was terrified of what her mind would conjure up without her control.
She heard his voice with the hiss of the wind, with the hushed murmurs and whispers on street corners and it made her feel as though she was always on the verge of losing her mind.
As much as she tried to erase the memories of everything that happened when she was in the pack and as much as she tried to erase the daunting image of her alpha, it was simply impossible and she was almost certain it would be like that for the rest of her life.
Harper fiddled with her dagger, examining the way the metal glistened under the glow of the morning sun. She yearned for sleep but would rather be exhausted than have to face the nightmares she was sure would have to endure the second her head hit the pillow.
Harper had decided to occupy herself with her daggers and knives when it was still dark out. It gave her an uncanny sense of safety to even simply hold the dagger in her hands, the feeling she got was the closest to if she were to use her voice.
It was ironic.
She had to stop using her voice as a weapon for the sole reason she couldn't control it properly, and yet, the reason she felt a morbid comfort within her various blades, knives and daggers was because of the control that they gave her.
Harper took a deep breath as she practically collapsed onto the ground. Her exhaustion from not sleeping and training till the break of dawn finally caught up to her. She set the dagger down on the dirt beside her and drew her knees to her chest and buried her head into them. Her thoughts were suffocating and deafeningly loud and nothing she did would quiten them. No matter how many breaths she drew, it was as if there was suddenly not enough oxygen around her.
She had been in Beacon Hills for not even a week and had seen hunters for the first time in years, had gone to school, which was an awfully strange experience for her because she'd only been enrolled for a few weeks before having to move. Although education was the last thing her alpha could possibly care about Selene has taken the time to teach Harper the fundamentals, which she was beyond grateful for.
The alphas priority was never to treat her like a person. Like a child. He trained her to be a living and breathing weapon since the moment she was old enough to string together sentences. He fed her lies and awful advice. Harper simply hated him. She hated him more than anything in the world.
The thoughts only got louder
The memories only got more vivid.
Until she just couldn't take it anymore.
Her chest rose and fell at a rapid rate as she lurched to grab her dagger. Her grip was so firm that the hilt of the dagger dug into her palms, but frankly, Harper didn't care. She rose to her feet and before she even knew what she was doing she swung her arm back and threw the dagger towards the trunk of a tree that was a short distance away from her.
She stared at her dagger that was now embedded deep within the bark of the tree. It was as if the world fell silent for a brief moment, her mind too. Harper could finally breathe.
Unfortunately, her bliss was short-lived because only seconds later she heard the sound of leaves rustling and twigs snapping with the sound of footsteps. Harper silently scurried over to her dagger and yanked it out of the tree, holding it out in front of her.
The footsteps only drew nearer with each second. Harper let out a shaky breath. Who would be lurking around near Derek's house on a Saturday morning? She wearily watched the corner where she expected whoever was sneaking around to pop out from.
The footsteps gradually came closer until, finally, a figure emerged. Harper let out a sigh of relief when she saw Selene standing in front of her. Harper fumbled with the dagger before simply tucking it into her sheath.
Selene let out a small laugh before she wrapped Harper in a warm bear hug. She was almost stunned at Selnes sudden embrace, it took her a moment to actually reciprocate her hug, and when she did it was as if all the stress and pent-up frustration she still had within in her melted away.
"What's going on Harps?" Selene immediately questioned once they eventually pulled away. Harper figured Selene had just woken up because her voice was still a little raspy and heavy with exhaustion.
"I just couldn't sleep" Harper trailed off shrugging her shoulders and avoiding looking at Selene for too long, "Did I wake you?" She questioned, finally finding the courage to meet Selene's forest-green eyes.
"No, not at all" Selene replied, shaking her head softly, "have you been doing this the whole night?" she asked, her big green eyes full of concern. Selene then slowly moved towards the tree that was chipped beyond belief from all of Harper's daggers being chucked at it.
She delicately traced her finger over all the indents and rigged marks left on the bark whilst Harper awkwardly spoke up,"I might have got a little, carried away."
Selene backed away from the tree and turned to face her, the apprehension and worry in each step and turn Selene took was clear. "Harper, something is going on, and it isn't just that you can't sleep, right?"
A blanket of familiar silence fell over them whilst Harper tried to figure out what to say because Selene was right. It wasn't just the fact that she couldn't fall asleep, it was that she didn't want to. She had too much on her mind and it was all too much for her.
It was the unfamiliarity of Beacon Hills, her memories, trying to figure out how to help Scott, whether or not she actually wanted to and the fact there was an alpha just roaming Beacon Hills, but most importantly, it was her nightmares.
"Hey, you can talk to me." Selene beckoned, closing the gap between them and looking at her with nothing but concern and love. Harper sighed, folding her arms over her chest in an attempt to warm herself up as the wind whistled by.
"Does it ever..." Harper hesitated, trying to find a way to word the emotional scars that the alpha and pack left her with. Deep down she knew that if anyone was to understand it would be Selene. "Will it get easier?"
Harper didn't even know it was possible but Selene's gaze softened even more as she looked down at the younger girl. She didn't even have to clarify what she was talking about because Selene already knew. The hard part wasn't understanding it was the response.
"Of course," she replied her tone soft and reassuring, "you just need to give yourself time." Harper wondered how it was so easy for Selene, or maybe it wasn't, maybe she was just good at pretending. Selene was only a few years older than Harper and she had told her that she had too spent the majority of her life with the pack.
The only difference between the two of them was that Selene was a werewolf who didn't ever lose herself even with the alpha spewing idiocy at her, and Harper was a siren, who had a curse placed on her entire bloodline that stopped her from keeping control of her abilities and maybe eventually herself.
"Has it gotten easier for you?" Harper questioned and Selene paused before responding, again trying to find the right thing to say.
"I have my moments" She answered truthfully, "sometimes I remember things I have done, things that have happened and it's like I can't think of anything else, but the more time passes the easier it gets."
"I just feel like it just won't get any better for me. I'll just be stuck. Like yesterday, when Scott came up to me and started going on about how I needed to stay away from Allison, I was fine, until, he grabbed my shoulder. Selene, my first instinct was to push a dagger into his chest."
Harper didn't have any more run-ins with either Stiles or Scott till the McCall boy stormed up to her the day after he shifted in the locker room and ordered her to stay away from his girlfriend, Allison Argent and Harper was confused out of her mind. And when she attempted to walk away he barely grabbed her shoulder and she instantly shoved him off her.
The fact is, she wanted to do a lot worse, and Harper just wished her brain would work normally and not cause her to rely on violence. That's indeed all she's ever known but she didn't want it to be like that anymore. But maybe it was just too late.
"Derek shouldn't have been petty and put Allison's jacket in her locker and Scott shouldn't have touched you." Selene beat around the bush, "but seriously, you can't beat yourself up about it."
"Can we go sit down?" Harper asked, rubbing her eyes tiredly whilst simultaneously trying to suppress a yawn. Her feet felt like jelly and as if they would give way any second.
Selene smiled as she wrapped an arm over Harper, "Sure." She answered as she led the both of them to the rickety porch steps.
They both sat on the steps leading up to the Hale house and Harper rested her head on Selene's shoulder. Once again the pair was swallowed up by silence. Selene rested her head on top of Harper's the both of them appreciating the silence.
Well, until they heard the sound of a car pulling in. Harper reluctantly lifted her head off Selene's shoulders and her eyebrows instantly furrowed together when she saw a police car heading their way.
"Selene, you should see this." Harper beckoned, looking down at her before focusing back on the cop car that was only getting closer as the seconds flew by. Selene lifted herself up, her eyes widening when she spotted the police cars.
"You need to go inside put your dagger away with the rest, don't come out and please, don't do anything stupid," Selene commanded urgently to Harper, who quickly obliged and flew up the rest of the steps.
She swung the front door open and pulled out the dagger from its holding place. Just as Harper was about to dart up the stairs and place the dagger in its hiding spot Derek was already standing as if he was expecting her."Give it to me, I'm quicker anyway," he said nonchalantly, taking his hands out of his pockets to grab the dagger from Harper, who didn't even have time to process let alone react to what was happening.
With his werewolf speed, Derek was out of her sight in the blink of an eye. "What is going on," Harper mumbled under her breath. It seemed like everyone else knew a lot more than she did. She moved towards one of the shattered windows and watched as two officers climbed out of their car.
"Derek Hale! We know you are in there!" One of the officers yelled as he travelled up towards the door and banged on it repeatedly. Harper practically jumped back when she saw Derek already back down the stairs and reluctantly making his way towards the door.
"What did you do?" Harper asked hurriedly, and her whisper may as well have been a shout. Derek didn't respond and just shot her his usual cold glare before he opened the door. Almost immediately, the officer clamped handcuffs on Derek's wrists and led him outside.
"Derek Hale, you have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law" The officer continued reading of his rights as he led him away, but the further they got the harder it was for Harper to listen in.
Once she couldn't even make out a single word that the officer was saying she peeped her head out the shattered window once again and saw Selene. But this wasn't what she wanted to see. Selene was being put in the back of the police car with Derek. Her eyes caught Harpers. They were pleading, probably pleading with her not to intervene, but how couldn't she?
Harper felt like she was a crashing wave and every sensible and logical part of her just got washed away and left on a sandy shore somewhere. Her heart was beating at a scarily quick rate as she darted out the door and tried to get to Selene. However, she was only to be met with a grey-haired officer who grabbed her forearm, stopping her from taking another step.
Harper didn't take her eyes away from Selene as she drew in a deep breath and tried to get some of her rational thinking back. "Easy there officer Shaun, I've got this one" Another man stepped in, he however wasn't just an officer he was the sheriff, that much Harper could make out from his shiny badge. The other officer said nothing and just dropped her arm before he got ushered away,
"are those two related to you in some way?" The sheriff inquired gently, looking over his shoulder towards Derek and Selene.
If she was being honest with herself, Harper's main concern wasn't Derek, her priorities lied with Selene, but it wasn't like Derek being hauled out in cuffs was fun to watch. He was important to Selene, so, in turn, he was important to Harper too.
"Selene is my guardian." She clarified although it was somewhat of a lie. Harper didn't even think she or Selene had a birth certificate, so in the eyes of the law, they didn't even exist. Let alone be able to go through the process of filing for guardianship.
"We are only taking her in for questioning and I should probably take you but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. I must apologise though, we didn't expect there to be anyone else but Derek here." The sheriff sighed as he pulled out his note pad.
Harper watched him wearily as he then pulled out a pen and looked at her. "I just want to let you know that if anything changes we might have you come in for questioning as well. Is that okay?" The sheriff asked and she just shot him back a small nod.
He then quickly jotted something down before giving another sigh. "Do you have anywhere you can stay for at least whilst we are doing the questioning and Derek is-" The sheriff cut himself off clearing his throat. "If not you can wait at the station for a few hours."
She thought for a moment, she was supposed to meet Lydia in around an hour so they could get ready for the lacrosse game she had forced Harper to go to. It was a full moon today, and it was now in Harper's hands to ensure Scott didn't slaughter anyone on the field.
"Yeah, I do." Harper nodded and the Sheriff just offered her a tight-lipped smile. She looked around and realised there was a lot more than just one police car, in fact, there were close to four.
Multiple corners had been taped off with bright yellow tape that read, "CRIME SCENE. DO NOT CROSS." If Harper wasn't confused already, she definitely was now. In fact she was out of her mind confused. One thing she did know was that she was glad Selene wasn't being arrested.
As Harper scanned the rest of what she missed whilst she was laser-focused on Selene, she noticed someone who was all too familiar. A shaggy-haired boy in the midst of it all. Scott McCall.
Once he noticed that Harper was glaring at him he skittishly looked away and tried his hardest to avoid her piercing gaze. "Do you need one of our officers to drop you off or will you be oka-"
"I'll be alright, thank you." Harper quickly replied, glancing at Selene once more before making her way over to Scott, who quickly turned around and propped his elbow onto the blue jeep beside him. Trying to act as unsuspecting as possible.
It took a matter of seconds for her to make it over to him, and when she did she had to suppress the urge to punch him right in the face. Selene's words replayed in her mind, "Don't do anything stupid".
Harper was beyond sure Scott had something to do with all of this and that's why the second she got an arm's length distance away from him, she grabbed hold of him by the collar of his shirt and slammed his back against the jeep, away from any of the officers –or the sheriff's– field of vision.
"You have five seconds to start explaining what you have done." Harper threatened and Scott looked up at her, his mouth bobbing like a fish as he tried to find the right words.
"Me and Stiles, we found a dead body," Scott confessed, and Harper's grip loosened. There was no way. "We didn't know you and Selene even lived here." He continued frantically but she wasn't even focused on him now, she was focused on the boy she remembered to be Stiles.Harper kept a watchful eye as he climbed into the Sheriff's car or the passenger side.
"you and your friend are both idiots, ones that are going to get themselves killed because you like putting the people who are trying to help in prison." She concluded, letting go of Scott causing him to stumble and attempt to regain his footing. Harper shook her head and walked away, disappearing into the tall trees and heading to Lydia's.
