Harper's footsteps were inaudible as she loomed in the shadows. She was only a few paces away from the hunters, who were all armed with some variant of a bow and arrow. "Keep looking, he has to be near." The man in the middle commanded, Harper assumed that was their leader.
He glanced over his shoulder at the rest of his crew, which consisted of two other men. They gave no second thought to obliging his orders, following him like he was their Shepherd. A stir of anticipation fizzed within Harper as the grip on her dagger tightened.
Harper and hunters of any kind had never got along. I mean how could they when all of them wanted to capture and torture her? She didn't even want to bring her dagger, but it was the only thing that could protect her if the worst came to worst.
After leaving her pack Harper had concluded that she shouldn't be using her siren powers. She couldn't control them well enough. It was too risky. Hence, why learned to use daggers instead. Harper kept moving, snaking her way through the ancient trees, her eyes never leaving the three hunters in front of her.And as they halted to a stop, so did she.
Squinting into the fog, she managed to spot the faint silhouette of Selene quickly darting from tree to tree, getting as close to the hunters as possible. This plan was messy and unorganised, but Harper blamed no one but Derek for that. He came up with it in a matter of seconds then ran out the door as quickly as he thought of the horrendous plan.
Harper's eyes landed on a cardigan blowing in the night breeze like a flag.
Was this the sign Derek told them to look out for?
Harper took a deep breath, steadying the dagger in her hands. The cold chill of the metal handle flooded her with an unsettling feeling. She hadn't faced hunters since she and Selene left the pack. The moment she felt the dread settle in her stomach she immediately shook it away. At least she tried to. But that feeling never just disappeared and it never got easier.
Only became slightly more bearable.
The three men crouched down, the one on the left used a massive boulder to prop his weapon up before firing an arrow of some sort. It flashed, and sparks erupted right past Harper's eyes towards Scott Mcall. The Werewolf that Harper, Derek and Selene came out here to help. Scott helplessly thrashed around, his amber eyes not knowing where to look as he clawed at nothing but thin air.
Harper looked up at the iridescent moon that hung in the velvet sky like a luxurious pearl, hoping it could just for a second distract her from what she knew was coming. A blood-curdling scream echoed through the barren forest, making even the trees quiver. It made the hair on Harper's arms stand. If it was up to her, she would've attacked the hunters the second she laid her eyes on them.
Instead, she continued following through with Derek's plan, seething at the three men who had smug smiles on their faces as they saw what they had done to Scott. A single arrow pinned his arm to the tree, stopping him from moving or doing anything at all.
As the hunters climbed out of the bushes the man in the middle looked at Scott pridefully, only seeing a monstrous werewolf. In a cynical and twisted way, Scott was his trophy.
The man's eyes were cold like all he was looking at was a monster. "Take him." He commanded plainly, lowering his crossbow. Harper felt the adrenaline coursing through her veins as she leapt out from behind a nearby tree, dragging one of the men –a part of the whole hunters-power puff girls group– to the ground with a hard thud.
Like clockwork, Selene too jumped out from seemingly thin air, grabbing another one of the men's shoulders, flinging him clean across the vast forest floor and into the rough bark of a tree.
However, the man that Harper just attacked doesn't give up that easily. He instead reached for his bow and arrow he dropped beside him, whilst her back was turned. Hearing the noise of leaves crunching behind her Harper just sighed, they can never make it easy for themselves, can they?
She swiftly turned around stomping on the guy's wrist causing him to wince, finally giving up on trying to retaliate. She had to admit these hunters were no where near as terrifying and skilled as ones she faced in the past.
Harper adjusted the hood on her head before dashing into the forest, not far behind Selene. The older girl peered over her shoulder, ensuring that she was following her and that she was all in one piece. Harper's mind and thoughts were deafeningly loud and ran through her mind moving almost as fast as her heartbeats in her chest.
She had spent the majority of her life running. Physically and mentally. When she was still in that God-awful pack, she was running from the threats of her alpha and mostly of what she had become. She hopelessly tried running from the guilt of all the blood she had spilt, but that was the hardest to run away from.
Even now, she still had nightmares that were practically indistinguishable from reality and it always went the same way. She would look down at her hands and all she would see was the thick, crimson blood coating her palms.
When she tried to run, she was stuck.
She couldn't speak and she sure as hell couldn't sing her way out of it. All she could do was reach for her throat and try to push out anything, yet not a single word would come out. And every time she woke up, Selene was beside her, running a hand through Harper's dark hair, ushering her back to sleep.
It's like Selene could read Harper's mind without even trying like she knew every thought that dwelled in her head. Selene knew Harper from the inside out. "You did what you did to survive" Selene would repeat over and over again until Harper's breathing slowed and she finally found the courage to shut her eyes and fall asleep again, this time in Selene's warm embrace.
The night breeze was relentless, whistling by Harper as she sprinted through the forest, bringing her back to reality, which wasn't much better than drowning in her thoughts if she was being honest with herself.
Her chest burned and her legs were sore, a throbbing pain pulsating through them. Luckily, she didn't have to run for much longer since she could just about make out the outline of Derek and Scott in the near distance. Selene seemed to also spot them as she began to slow down, and Harper did the same. Her chest heaved as she took slow deep breaths trying to regulate her breathing and slow her racing heart.
"You okay?" Selene asked, turning over to look at Harper who gave her a reassuring nod, shortly after placing her dagger back into its sheath and pulling down her hood.
"Who are you?" a now-human Scott questioned, looking between Harper and Selene, "And who were they?" his words came out mangled and nothing short of a stuttering mess.
"We are the people that just saved your ass from getting captured and probably being tortured by hunters," Harper replied whilst Selene struggled to stifle a laugh.
"A thank you would be well appreciated," Selene added jokingly and surprisingly Scott delivered her a small and extremely confused 'thank you?'
"Cut it out," Derek warned shooting a glare in Selene and Harper's direction before he turned his attention back to the puzzled Scott, "Like Harper said, they are hunters, the kind that have been hunting us for centuries."
As if a switch flipped within him, a disgusted look plagued Scott's face as he attempted to stand up, falling miserably, only reaching about half of his true height before he winced and reached for his hurt arm.
"You mean you! You did this to me!" He exclaimed, letting out all his pent-up frustration onto Derek.
Harper turned to face Selene with a puzzled expression, he does know Derek isn't an Alpha and can't turn him, right? Harper thought to herself before a pang of guilt burned in her chest. Scott had no idea what this truly meant for him. How his life was now forever altered.
She's seen this happen plenty of times over the years and built an endurance of sorts to it. That didn't mean that she felt completely unsympathetic about it.
"Is it really so bad Scott?" Derek questioned with a bitter expression, leaning down to his level, "That you can see better, hear more clearly? You have something any human would kill for. The bite is a gift."
A chill, that felt charged with electricity, shot down Harper's spine. The bite is a gift. Harper had heard that all her life, it's something the older kids in her pack would tell the newcomers. Something the alpha himself would tell the people he selfishly turned in hopes of building an army.
When they were still in the pack, just like the other older kids, Selene was tasked with helping the stubborn kids who wanted to reject their newfound werewolf abilities rather than learn to live with them. Harper would listen to the way Selene explained it to them, it wasn't like the others did, she didn't try to justify the bite or shun them for how they were feeling.
The alpha hated it.
He said it raised weak fighters and ones he didn't want in his pack. The alpha would rip Selene's throat out if she wasn't of great value to him, her fighting skills undeniably one of the best.
Harper felt a set of eyes burning into the side of her head, ones she already knew belonged to Selene, "I don't want it." Scott retaliated his tone meek and not as full of anger as it had been just seconds before.
"You will," Derek stated coldly.
"And you're going to need to trust someone more than yourself if you want to be able to control it, Scott. You're going to need us." Selene chimed in, her tone a lot less harsh than Derek's.
"Do you know what this means Scott? You and me, we are brothers now." Derek jumped in, disrupting the few brief seconds of silence that fell over the four of them.
Then, just walked away as if nothing ever happened. Leaving the other three to eat his dust. Harper's eyes followed Derek until he got far enough that she couldn't see him anymore.
He confused Harper.
One moment, he was incredibly adamant about helping Scott and then just left him alone in a forest where the hunters could easily catch him.
"Are you guys also...you know?" Scott questioned, Selene and Harper. He pressed his hand on his forearm as he slid back onto the ground, it seemingly being too painful for him to even stand.
"She is," Harper answered, nodding over to Selene. Scott's eyes were fixated on Harper, as he waited for her to elaborate, but she never did.
"Can you check his arm for me?" Selene asked, eyeing Scott who didn't look in the best shape. Harper kneeled to his level, ready to inspect his wounds.
"I don't have x-ray vision, you're going to need to move your hand so I can see how hurt you are." Harper quipped and Scott reluctantly revealed the injury. At first glance Harper could tell it was nothing to worry about, it would heal pretty quickly.
She glanced over her shoulder to relay the information to Selene. Except she wasn't paying attention, instead she was peering into the distance through narrowed eyes.
"Are the hunters back?" Scott frantically spluttered out, his eyes as wide as dinner plates. Selene shook her head telling both Scott and Harper that the hunters were nowhere near.
Harper caught a hint of hesitation behind Selene's brown eyes as she tried to ignore what was on her mind, "What's going on?" Harper inquired, lifting herself off the ground so she could speak to Selene properly.
"Derek hasn't left, he's somewhere near. I can feel it." Selene responded, keeping her voice low. So low Harper could barely make it out.
"You better go find him, and figure out what his problem is" Harper scoffed, folding her arms over her chest now paying extra attention to the areas consumed by fog or general spots of darkness and shadows.
"Are you crazy Harp? I'm not going to leave you." Selene shook her head, seemingly dumbfounded at the prospect of leaving Harper.
"Selene, I'm fine. I can handle myself." Harper assured, "Besides if you can feel him he must not be far, meaning you won't be far."
Selene was beyond hesitant, even with the plethora of reassurance from Harper. "Go, Selene" Harper nodded, "I'll make sure Scott is at least somewhat okay and we will both be fine." After a little more convincing, Selene and Harper bid their farewells.
Whilst Selene disappeared into the tall trees looking for Derek, Harper crouched down in front of Scott.
What is she even supposed to do with him?
