Chapter 4
First Person POV
September 4th, 2019
3:00 p.m.
School was pretty boring for the rest of the day. All we did was read the syllabus and do a introduction activity. But on the plus side, we had no homework.
I walked out of the school and began to head towards my car. The plan was to bring the other two home before heading to Lynn Labs. After a few minutes of waiting, Keith entered the car.
"So....How was your first day of freshman year?" I asked, putting the car in reverse and slowly backing out of the parking space.
"I don't want to talk about it." Keith grumbled, putting on his seatbelt and then crossing his arms and looking out the window.
"That bad, huh?" I asked as we pulled out of the parking lot and headed to the elementary school.
"All of the kids are mean. I haven't made any friends yet either." He burst out, his frustration leaving him. Keith recently came from the elementary school that Katie goes to. He had a few friends, but they lost touch over the summer.
"It's okay. You'll find people to hang out with eventually. Remember, this is just the first day." I reminded him.
We picked up Katie and drive home. I told them that I had to go to the Lab a bit early.
I got to the lab at 4:00. I parked the car in one of the employee spots before heading inside.
The lab was a huge building. It was circular in shape, and had a lot of glass windows instead of walls. The doors were rotating, so you had to get into a part of it and push in order to get in.
As I walked in, I spotted Charlie and started to walk towards him. He was talking to the receptionist, who looked a bit nervous, as the bosses' son was talking to her.
"Hey Charlie! Where is your dad?" I asked, leaning against the receptionist desk to talk with him.
"Oh, hey Claire! He is up in the new lab! Wanna go home and see it? Apparently they are working with some new specie of spider." He said, looking at me with an excited smile.
A new specie of spider? That's pretty interesting.
"Do they know if it's poisonous at all?" I asked as the receptionist told us which elevator to take to the new lab.
"I think dad said that it's more like a paralysis than poison. I guess we'll have to ask him just to make sure." He said, walking towards the elevator and entering it.
I walked in right behind him and watched as he pressed the 31st floor button. A few seconds later, we began to rise.
It took us about 2 minutes for the elevator to reach the 31st floor. We exited the elevator and Charlie began to lead the way towards the lab.
"He said L42 is where him and the spiders will be at." Charlie stated, walking up to a door and opening it.
Inside the room, it was bare, except for a few examination tables and a bunch of terrariums running along the wall. Against the windows were plants. I could identify them as succulents. Some were plush plants and others were elephant ears. In any way, they were all pretty.
In the left corner of the room was a large glass cylinder terrarium with biologists surrounding it, taking notes on clipboards in their hands.
"Charlie! Claire! There you are!" Called a voice among the scientists. A tall man emerged from the crowd and beckoned us over to the spiders. Her wore a white lane coat and goggles.
Joseph Lynn is a funny and exciting man. He is mostly there for his kids (Charlie has two younger siblings, a 10 year old brother named Zachary and a 7 year old sister named Elle) when he hasn't found anything interesting at his work.
I smiled at Joe as he beckoned is over, "Make sure you put on a coat and goggles." He warned us as we grabbed coats and goggles from a rack by the door. We then proceeded to the containment unit.
"How did you find these spiders?" I asked, looking into the terrarium at the spiders. They were neon colors. Some were neon blue, others were pink and orange. There were even some that were neon purple.
"We actually genetically modified some poisonous spiders. It was interesting to see their body colors change and their genetics all together." Joe stated proudly.
"What is their purpose?" Charlie asked, lightly tapping the glass with his pointer finger.
"To change the world. Their string should be able to hold ten tons, if genetically modified correctly." Joe said, gently grabbing his sons' hand and removing it from the glass.
I stared into the terrarium, watching the spiders crawl carelessly along fake logs and branches. "So, why did we have to wear goggles when we are around them?" I asked distractedly.
"They can easily paralyze things by looking at them. It's a side affect we found out the hard way. So, the goggles are fitted with an extra lens to keep us safe." Joe answered while looking into the terrarium.
"And if someone were to be bit by one?" I asked again, still keeping my eyes on the spiders.
"Death most likely. They have a poisonous bite that would usually kill you in seconds, but since they are genetically modified, I'm not exactly sure." He said, as if he knew from experience. His gaze shifted a bit when I asked the question, and now I can't help but wonder if someone was actually bit by one.
949 words.
Sorry if this chapter sucks, but I did try my best to make it interesting 😊
Also, in case you guys didn't know, I'm new to writing, so if my grammar sucks, that's why.
Hopefully in the next chapter we'll be getting into some more interesting stuff.
