A tinkle of bells sounded as Jake pushed the door open to Holly's Cafe.
"Hey Jake! What can I get you today?" Holly, the owner of the place, asked warmly.
"Hey Holly! Um, just give me three boxes of glazed donuts, please." Jake replied with a smile.
"Three boxes? I guess you're pretty hungry, huh? Well you are a growing 3rd grader," Holly teasingly said as she placed the order at the cashier.
"Actually, this is for the children's group at the church. We're doing a play for Christmas. You know, the birth of Jesus?" Jake sat down on a nearby chair to wait for the donuts.
"Oh right! I remember seeing that on the church bulletin last Sunday. So this is your first practice?"
"Yeah and that's why Mom said we had to bring a snack for the whole group."
"Where is your mom, by the way?" questioned Holly as she packed the donuts into a box and handed them to Jake.
He handed her the amount of money needed and said, "She's outside, waiting in the car. She said she couldn't go out since she slept at two last night and apparently has bags under her eyes." Jake shrugged.
Holly laughed and said, "Typical Kelly. Well, tell her I said hi and that those bags aren't going to go away until she stops working so late."
Jake nodded and waved as he made his way out of the cafe.
"Good luck with the play!" Holly shouted after him.
"Thank you!"
Jake hugged the box of donuts close as he ran to the waiting white Lexus, minding the slippery ice, and jumped in as if someone was chasing him. He handed the box to his mom in the front and blew warm breath into his freezing hands.
"See, I told you to take your gloves with you!" Jake's mom exclaimed when she caught him in the action.
"Ok ok, I'll listen to you next time," Jake said as he crossed his eyes at his mother playfully and put his hands over the car heater.
Jake's mom ruffled his hair with a grunt and a smile. "You better be glad you have such a cool mother who buys your friends donuts, young man." She glared at him jokingly and started to steer the car out of the parking lot.
"Turn up the radio, please," Jake requested in a sweet voice.
Next up is a song by MercyMe.
It's not common to hear a song that's in Joseph's point of view; we all just unintentionally ignore that and move on to Mary.
Yes, that's true. And I'm so glad that MercyMe made this song because whenever I hear it, I can just feel how Joseph would have felt as he held the Savior of this world in his hands. Don't you think you would have felt so exhilarated, yet sorrowful at the same time?
Yes, I totally agree with you, Anne. But enough of our talking. Here's Joseph's Lullaby by MercyMe.
Jake shifted in his seat as he focused on the song. This unusual song, as the radio hosts said.
Go to sleep my Son.
This manger for your bed.
You have a long road before You.
Rest Your little head.
Can You feel the weight of Your glory?
Do You understand the price?
Or does the Father guard Your heart for now
So You can sleep tonight?
Jake tilted his head a little, remembering that he could be chosen as Joseph for the church play. He listened all the harder.
This world can wait for one more moment.
Go and sleep in peace
I believe the glory of Heaven
Is lying in my arms tonight.
Lord, I ask that He for just this moment
Simply be my child.
"Wow. This song totally shows the whole birth of Jesus in a different view, huh?" marveled Jake's mom as she stopped at a red light just then.
"Yeah. It's....interesting," agreed Jake with a small nod. He placed his finger on his chin and continued to listen as the instrumental part ended.
Go to sleep my Son.
Baby, close Your eyes.
Soon enough You'll save the day.
But for now, dear Child of mine.
Oh my Jesus,
Sleep tight.
Jake suddenly felt tears welling up in his eyes and clasped his hands together. 'Dear God, thank you for letting me hear this song. I pray that I would not forget this feeling as we practice the play. And please let me be chosen as Joseph. I want to show people how Your Son was so precious that even though Joseph wasn't his real father, he still loved Him so much. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen!'
"Ok, we have arrived! Jake, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" Jake's mom asked worriedly when she found him in a praying position with traces of tears on his chubby cheeks.
He looked up, wiped away his tears, and grinned at his mom. "I guess I was so moved by the song!" he half-jokingly uttered.
His mom breathed a sigh of relief and pinched his cheeks. "You little cutie-pie. What am I going to do with you?" She smiled brightly at him.
He laughed and moved forward to hug her around the neck.
Jake's mom patted his back for a moment and then said, "Alright, handsome, if you don't want to be late for the first practice of your acting career, then I suggest you stop this hugging business."
They pulled away and got out of the Lexus, with the donuts in Jake's arms.
"Have fun, ok? And don't just eat all the donuts by yourself, you're going to get fat," Jake's mom said as they walked to the room where the children were supposed to meet.
"Way to go, mom. Saying that to a kid who's going to go through puberty soon."
She laughed aloud and ruffled his hair. "I don't think you should worry too much about that right now, little boy. Call me when you're done, alright? I think I'll just go back to Holly and chat with her during your practice."
"Ok. Got it. And oh yeah! Holly told me to tell you hi and that you shouldn't work so hard if you're going to get rid of the bags under your eyes," Jake stated in a matter-of-fact way.
Jake's mom smirked and replied, "Thanks for telling me that now, hotshot." She gave him a peck on the head and waved to him as she made her way back to the main lobby.
Jake took a deep breath and again asked God for the part of Joseph earnestly. He then turned the door handle and pulled the door wide open to be greeted by the teachers and the whole children's group.
Ms. Williams ran over to him and exclaimed, "Jake! You're finally here! For a second, I thought you weren't going to come and was just about to change your part with Matthew, even though he said that he just wanted to do props. But thank goodness you're here. Oh, what is this?"
He handed over the box and said, "It's donuts for the whole class. What par-"
"Oh thank you, Jake! I was just wondering what we should feed the kids as a snack. Send my thanks to your mother, as well," she cut in. She smiled at him and was just about to walk away when Jake grabbed her arm.
"May I ask what part I'm assigned to?"
"Oh that's right. I didn't even tell you yet, sorry. You're going to be Joseph."
