Day 12 - Angel
Write a scene that involves the word angel.
-------
As the first bell rang, Tessa broke into a run toward her locker, dodging fellow students along the way. She scolded herself mentally for waking up so late, even if it was the last day of school.
Coming up to her locker, she smiled at the familiar sight of an origami heart taped to it and took it off before opening her locker and grabbing her science textbook.
~~
"Hey, why don't you try to figure out who it is?" asked Jamie as they were walking to second period.
Tessa fingered the heart in her pocket and replied, "I did try, remember? But I've never caught anyone suspicious."
Jamie poked her in the side and said, "Of course, you didn't catch them, because your type of ’trying' was walking by your locker every 2 minutes."
"Sorry! I couldn't think of anything else. Why don't you think of a plan if you're such a genius?"
"Well, I never said I was a genius, but I'll see what I can come up with," responded Jamie with a mischievous grin.
~~
Since it was the last day of school, second period consisted of a documentary about the history of Egypt and about half the class almost drowning out the sound of it by their snores.
With her eyes staring blankly at the screen, Tessa's mind wandered to the note.
Taking out the heart from her pocket, she unfolded it and reread it again.
A person's smile
reflects their heart.
So, always keep that
pretty smile on your face.
It was always simple messages like this, but it never failed to give her a pleasant, warm feeling that lasted throughout the whole day, no matter what was happening at home.
She reminisced back to the first time she started getting these notes. It was nine months ago, after her dad announced his relationship with his co-worker. Eight years after her mom's death, it was the first time he showed signs of moving on without that guilty sorrow constantly in the expression of his eyes.
Because of that reason, she couldn't tell him her true feelings. She had hated that he seemed to blame himself for what had happened.
But, honestly, she hadn't wanted him to move on either, at least not in this way. Of course, she cared for his happiness and didn't actually want him to live in grief for the rest of his life. However, the selfish part of her also didn't want him to find another love. She loathed the feeling that seemed like he was forgetting her Mom.
Amazingly, it seemed like there was someone who knew her troubles and wanted to comfort her, because she found a yellow origami heart taped to the front of her locker the next day.
And now, at the end of her senior year that was filled with multiple misunderstandings, haphazard events, deep talks, and continuous origami hearts through it all, she felt as if she was somehow close friends with the person behind these notes.
Tessa sighed as she was reminded of the fact that she didn't, and probably will never, know who that person is.
~~
"So I was thinking about it all throughout second period, and I have the perfect plan. Ready? Ready?" Jamie practically bounced with enthusiasm.
When Tessa raised her brows for her to continue, Jamie began excitedly, "Ok, so this person has been giving you notes everyday -well, every school day- since the start of our senior year. And it's only in the mornings, not at any other time. Oh, and the messages were abou-"
Tessa raised her hand to cut her off and said, "Can you skip the summary and get to the plan already?"
Her friend pouted and complained, "But I've been preparing this summary all throughout that documentary."
"You're gonna be late for your class if you're planning to have a speech about this."
"Fine, I'll get to the point," Jamie grumbled.
~~
Hi, I'm Tessa.
Tessa erased what she wrote for the umpteenth time and tapped her chin with her pencil in contemplation. It was a good thing her third period teacher allowed them free time for the hour, or she wouldn't have been able to go through with Jamie's plan.
Hey, this is Tessa. But you probably already know that, since this is my locker.
It sounds like I'm rambling. She erased it again.
Hey there, pal, just writing this note to see if you're not a weird person or anything, ya know?
She inwardly groaned and crumpled up the sheet of paper.
"Hey, what're you doing?"
Tessa looked up to see Henry sitting backwards in the seat in front of her with one hand under his chin, staring at her.
"Oh. Nothing," she said as she simultaneously stuffed the crumpled paper into her bag.
Henry glanced towards it but didn't ask, although she knew he was probably dying with curiosity.
"What's up?" she asked as he didn't say anything after a few moments.
"Huh? Oh, I was just wondering how things were going lately. You know, with your dad and," he paused for a second and continued carefully, "your step-mom."
Henry was the only other person, besides Jamie, who knew her true thoughts about her dad's remarriage. Although she had become pretty close to Charlotte, her now step-mom, after all they went through, she wasn't quite sure if she was ready to recognize her as her 'mom' yet.
Tessa gave him a genuine smile in return for his worry and replied, "They're doing well. And I think I am too. Charlotte's been trying really hard to 'bond' with us, as Dad says. So, I've decided to do the same."
The boy nodded thoughtfully and seemed to be locked in his thoughts. Tessa took the long pause to think back to Jamie's plan.
Should I write something witty to show I want to be their friend, or just ask who they are straightforwardly? Something like, Can you tell me who you are? No, that sounds kind of overwhelming. May you be able to tell me your name? Is that even grammatically correct? How ab-
"Hey. Um, Tessa?"
She snapped out of her thoughts and focused her eyes on Henry's face. He looked anxious about something, and her forehead crinkled in worry.
"Yeah?"
He fiddled with his fingers a bit before taking a deep breath and started talking quickly, his eyes darting around nervously.
"So, I was thinking. If you're not troubled with any problems right now, maybe we could hang out or something? If you're not busy, that is. I mean, we haven't been hanging out a lot these days because of everything that was going on, but now that's over, maybe we can-"
"Sure. That'd be fun," Tessa said before he started rambling. She saw that there was only about two minutes left of class, and she would need as much time as possible to think about how she should ask the identity of her mystery note person. "Do you want me to ask Jamie, to save time for you?"
"Oh, um, actually, I was thinking that it would only be the two of us," he paused for a moment before saying, "Like a date."
Tessa's eyes widened with surprise, and everything she was thinking about before flew out of her head, leaving a blank sheet of paper.
~~
"So, so, did you think about what to write to your mystery note boyfriend?" Jamie asked as they walked to fourth period.
Tessa startled at the word 'boyfriend' and slapped her friend's arm. "You don't know if they're a guy!"
"Ow! No need to be so violent, woman!" Jamie yelped and rubbed her arm. "But really, when you think about it, there's a higher possibility of them being a guy, because who would do this kind of thing everyday if they weren't interested in you?"
At her friend's words, Tessa thought back to Henry, but immediately shook her head afterwards.
"Whoa there. What's with the sudden spaz attack?"
"It's nothing."
However, being the quick-witted person Jamie was, she instantly knew her friend wasn't telling the truth.
"Wait a minute. Did you think of a suspect?" When Tessa hesitated, she caught on and nagged with multiple questions until her weak-hearted friend had told her everything.
This time, it was Jamie who did the slapping-of-the-arm to Tessa. "Why didn't you tell me before? Oh my gosh, I can't believe that coward finally asked you out! Finally!" She raised her arms and looked up at the ceiling in a dramatic gesture. "So did you say yes?"
Tessa looked around embarrassingly and saw several students staring at them. "Stop that," she quietly said and forced her friend's arms down.
"So did ya? Did ya? Did ya? Did ya?"
She shook her head.
To her relief, the bell had rang right after he had asked, and she had wasted no time to mumble an incoherent excuse saying she had to meet Jamie somewhere and hightailed it out of there before he could hold her back.
Then Jamie's words suddenly registered in her mind, and she spun towards her. "What do you mean by 'finally'?" When she didn't reply, Tessa exclaimed, "You knew? How?"
Her usually loud friend looked at her sheepishly and replied, "It was kind of obvious."
~~
Just when Tessa thought she had no more problems in her life, another one had popped up right before her eyes.
One of her closest guy friends liked her, and it was apparently the most obvious thing of the century, according to Jamie.
She leaned her chin into her propped-up hand on the desk and sighed inaudibly.
Then, she suddenly remembered the note she was supposed to write and slumped against the back of her chair. She had briefly forgotten about it due to Henry's asking her out.
She violently shook her head again when that memory floated to the surface of her mind and focused back on the note.
~~
"So, what did you write? Huh? Huh?" Jamie kept pestering her as they sat down at a random table to eat their lunch.
"Umm...." Tessa stalled for time as she grabbed her milk and started sipping it from a straw. For some reason, she was kind of embarrassed to tell her what she had wrote in the note she had taped to her locker before lunch. A part of her hoped that it would be answered, but the other hoped the opposite.
Jamie snatched the milk away from her in impatience and exclaimed, "Come on, woman! Are you gonna take all day?!"
"Ok, ok, fine. I wrote....Can you tell me who you are? I don't bite."
Jamie facepalmed and said, "Seriously? That's all you wrote? That's all you could think of after almost two hours of thinking?"
Tessa hesitated before shaking her head slightly. "I also asked if it was Henry before that part."
"Huh? Why?"
Ducking her head so her hair could cover her blushing face, she replied, "Cuz I thought it might be him."
"Hmm. You're right, I also thought it was him too."
"What was who?" Henry asked as he settled his tray next to Tessa's and nonchalantly took a seat next to her, like normal.
"Uh, nothing," Tessa panicked and started eating her sandwich before he could ask more questions.
Jamie snickered at her actions and looked at her two best friends before her with an amused grin. This is going to get interesting.
~~
At the end of the day, Tessa walked toward her locker with uncertainty and hope mixed inside her.
She walked with her eyes on the ground, not yet ready to see the result.
When she arrived in front of her locker, she took a deep breath and looked up. To see a pink origami heart taped to it.
She unconsciously smiled at the familiar sight and took it off. Opening it up gingerly, her eyes eagerly read what was written inside.
Sorry to disappoint,
but I'm not Henry.
And I can't tell you my name,
but I will tell you this.
I'm your guardian angel.
Tessa sighed in disappointment. She had expected this person wouldn't give her their name, but she couldn't deny the fact that she had anticipated the opposite.
Flipping the paper over in hopes of something more, she got her wish. There was something written in the corner.
ps. say yes to Henry. He's been wanting to ask you out since last year!
Her heart jumped at the words, and she felt her face get hot. Fanning it with the paper, she wondered at how this person seemed to know everything.
"Tessa! Did you get your answer?!" Jamie yelled as she ran down the hallway in her direction, waving her arms about wildly.
Tessa looked up at her crazy, yet lovable, friend and nodded.

Epilogue
"Good job on this year," says our team leader as he clamps a hand on my shoulder and squeezes it good-heartedly. "I'll be expecting the same good work when she goes into college. She'll be needing twice the help in that place."
I nod and rub my shoulder when he lets it go. Sometimes, our team leader couldn't control his strength when he compliments us.
As I make my way out of his office, I spot a friend I've been looking everywhere for and fly over to him.
"Hey! I've been looking everywhere for you! I need to tell you something."
He looks up as I land before him and asks, "What is it?"
"You know how your human likes my human? Well, I-"
"Hey! Your human is gonna like mine back! Just you wait!"
"Calm down. I was just stating the facts as of now." I shake my head at his silliness and continue, "Well anyway, I kinda told her that...fact."
"What?! Do you know how long it took him to ask her out? Oh, you do know how long, don't be looking at me all innocent, Mister."
"I know, I know. Therefore, I thought that I could help him a little by doing that. You know my human's personality. She just needs a little push."
"And I'm sure you told her through that thing you did everyday, right? You didn't directly talk to her, right?" My friend eyes me suspiciously, and I hold up my hands.
"Of course I didn't talk to her directly! That's against the rules!"
"Yes, because you were always such a rule-lover. Isn't that thing you did against the rules? That origami thing you thought was genius?"
"Hey, I got permission from the team leader to do that. And what do you mean, 'thought' was genius? It is genius. It helped her a lot."
"Oh sure. You can think whatever you want to. Because-"
I block out his rambling and look down to see a funny sight.
Cutting in through his babbling, I say, "I think you should go help your human now, he seems lost on what socks to wear."
With that, I lift my wings and fly off to where my human is waiting for her date to arrive.

A/N
I think this is the longest one I've done so far. It was fun though, cuz I liked this plot. ^^
I was originally going to write this differently with a whole other plot in the angel's pov, but I decided this was better (and easier) to write.
