Day 11 - Musician

Write a scene where one of the characters is a musician.

"There is no way I'm playing that."

"But you said you wanted to play in the orchestra!"

"Yeah, with an actual instrument. Not that!"

Samuel sighed and, holding it up, said, "This is an instrument, for your information."

I eyed the 'instrument' with suspicion and retorted, "Whoever made that," I pointed at it, "had no thinking. Who would think of that as a proper instrument? It's more of a kid's toy. And I don't even like that shape."

I paused, and seeing Samuel staring at me hopefully, stated, "I am not gonna play that."

Not even seeming to hear one word of what I said, he just held it up to me with two hands and gave me a persuading look.

"No."

He then poked me with it several times and raised his eyebrows with a grin.

I kept my face expressionless and repeated, "No."

Taking on a different tactic, he said with a pleading voice, "Come on, Val, we really need someone to play this. Besides, you promised me you would play in the orchestra!"

Before I could reply, his eyes lighted up and and snapped his fingers -well, as best as he could while carrying the 'instrument'- as if he just remembered something.

"Oh yeah! Susan said she wanted to help too, so I'll just ask her, since someone isn't keeping promises." He snuck a condemning glance at me and turned to walk back to the music room.

And me, having a too-meddling conscience, was reminded of Leigh practically commanding me to keep other girls away from Samuel, especially Susan. I sighed and wondered why Leigh liked Samuel of all guys while I ran to catch him before he entered the room.

"Alright, alright. I'll play your stupid instrument, you happy?" I said as I came up behind him.

Samuel whirled around with a grin that showed off all his white teeth and asked, "Really? You will?"

When I nodded, he exclaimed, "Oh thank goodness! I was actually bluffing about asking Susan. But then I couldn't take it back since I already told you that I would, and seriously, I didn't want to go back and beg you to, since you can be so stubborn sometimes."

I rolled my eyes and took the instrument from him. "You owe me a favor, Mathews."

He nodded like a bobblehead and ushered me into the room.

When he opened the door, everyone in the room turned to look at us. I gave Samuel a questioning look, but he was turned away from me and gave our audience an enthusiastic nod. With that, everyone started clapping and hooting.

I tilted my head to glare at Samuel beside me. He smiled sheepishly and said, "So maybe I promised everyone that I would make you play the triangle."

By then, everyone had gone back to whatever they were doing before, so I punched him in the arm and smirked when he yelped.

Before he could take revenge, I quickly walked to the back of the room and took a seat.

However, right as I did, Susan plopped down in the seat next to me and gave me a belittling look. When I made no response to that, she cleared her throat several times as if trying to get my attention and pretended to be looking through her music sheets.

As I still made no response, she gave up and said in her squeaky voice, "I didn't think you would actually agree to playing the triangle, Valerie. Well, I guess it does fit your level of," she paused and mocked a thinking face, "intelligence, don't you think?" Here she gave me a fake smile and continued, "At least you won't mess up, with such an easy instrument to play. But you should still practice, just so that everyone won't know how stupid you really are."

With that, she flounced off to her tittering posse watching us, and I rolled my eyes. Did she really think that offended me? I scoffed. And how many words did that girl emphasize?

A/N

Wouldn't a person playing the triangle be a musician, too? (;
