Day 10 - Emergency
Write a scene where some kind of emergency occurs.
---------
"Mom! Stepdad! We're here!" I yelled as soon as I walked in. "With Cameron!"
We stepped into the living room to find it a complete mess. There were boxes and boxes of stuff all around, packed with everything in the house. And there were some opened, like someone had taped it and cut it open again.
Since everything was packed up, there was nothing left in the living room except the multitude of boxes and some plastic-covered furniture. I had never seen the house so messy and disorderly before, since Mom usually liked everything to be neat and tidy. But I guessed she didn't really have time to think about 'neat and tidy' when there was so many other things to be done with the move and such.
My big sister, with her full moon belly, walked out from the kitchen with a plate of cookies in one hand and Melanie's hand in the other.
"Ava! Welcome home! Or at least what's left of it," she said as she shrugged at the mess.
"Um yeah, thanks," I replied.
"And Cameron! I haven't seen you since last Christmas!" She gave my boyfriend a smile and continued, "I would give you both a hug, but as you can see, my hands are full."
I reached out my hand to Melanie in order to lessen her load, but the little munchkin smiled sweetly and instead, went around me to Cameron to hold his hand.
I pretended to act offended and said, "What? Mel, how could you ignore your big sister? Oh well, I guess those presents we bought back in Michigan will all just have to go to William."
The 7-year-old gasped and quickly clasped my hand too, looking up at me with an expectant face.
Cameron nudged me as if to tell me to stop teasing her, and I relented. "Alright, alright, I guess you'll get some too."
Samantha laughed at the scene and told us to follow her to the kitchen.
When we had all gotten settled at the counter, with the little siblings busy with their coloring books, I asked while munching on a cookie, "When did you get here? I thought you said on the phone that you would arrive after us? And where's Mom and Stepdad? Oh yeah, and bro-in-law? Wait, they just left you alone with two kids when you could go into labor any second? Wh-"
"Whoa, slow down! One question at a time, Ava!" Samantha laughed as she held out her hands to slow me down. "First of all, we started out earlier than planned, so we got here 3 days ago. And Theo and Dad went to the new house to help with the furniture and stuff, and Mom went to the store to buy things for dinner. And yes, they did leave me alone with two kids, but I'm not going to go into labor any second. I have about two weeks left, so it's ok."
"But still...," I muttered.
My boyfriend, who was supposed to be on my side, cut in and said, "Yeah, Ava, it's ok. Besides, it's not like she isn't capable of doing things on her own, even if she is pregnant."
"Thank you!" exclaimed Samantha as she was digging in the cabinet.
I elbowed him in the arm and grumbled, "You, just be quiet."
William looked up from his coloring and promptly stated, "You should give him a time-out."
As I smothered an amused grin, I asked him why, and he answered solemnly, "Mommy gives Daddy time-outs when he doesn't take her side."
After exchanging glances with Cam, we burst out laughing at the same time. He was just too cute!
Melanie poked William in the side and said, "Silly. She gives him time-outs only when he doesn't give her the remote control."
She gave him a 'duh' look, and William retorted, "Nuh-uh! That time at the mall when Daddy took Aunt Molly's side over Grandma's present, Mommy said to me that she was gonna give Daddy a time-out when we go home!"
All this time, Cameron and I had continued cracking up at their cuteness. As we calmed down, he leaned over and whispered, "When we get married, we're gonna have to have at least eight kids."
I pulled back in shock and punched him in the arm. "Try saying that when you're the one giving birth to them!"
He opened his mouth to reply, but the shattering of a cup stopped him. All four of us looked toward the noise and saw Samantha at the sink, one hand on her stomach and the other on the counter edge, trying to right herself.
"Samantha! Are you okay?" I jumped up from my seat and rushed over to her, minding the broken pieces of the cup on the floor.
She wordlessly looked up at me with an expression of pain on her face, but that was all that I needed to know what was happening.
"Move her to the car, quick!" I yelled. And Cam, getting the hint, tossed me the car keys, and I instructed him to carry Samantha bridal style as I ran ahead of them to clear the way and to open the front door.
I suddenly remembered that we had some luggage in the backseat of Cam's Lexus, so I quickly dragged them out and dumped them on the side of the driveway, just as my surprisingly strong boyfriend was swiftly walking barefooted toward the car, Samantha in his arms.
As he was carefully putting her in the backseat, I remembered the kids and ran back inside to get them.
"What's wrong? Where's Samantha going? Is she okay?"
The kids were full of questions as I quickly grabbed both their hands and started running back to the car. At the front door, Cameron was throwing the luggage I had dumped on the driveway inside, and I told him to carry Melanie to the car.
My own arms full of William, I could only snatch one pair of pink Crocs for Cameron before following him.
When we neared the car, Samantha was now doubled-over and groaning in pain, and Cameron was standing there, not knowing where to put Melanie. Thinking that it wouldn't be good for the kids to sit with her, I opened the passenger door and ushered them in. Being kids, they thankfully could fit.
After shoving the Crocs to Cameron to wear, I took the seat next to Samantha, while he reluctantly put them on and rushed over to the driver's seat. I snickered at him, despite the situation.
As he hurriedly backed out of the driveway, the fact that I hadn't locked the house door struck me, and I slapped my forehead.
"Hey, isn't that Mommy?" William shouted from the front.
When I looked up, it surely was Mom walking on the sidewalk with hands full of groceries. I wasn't sure if she saw us, since we were going pretty fast, but at least the unlocked house wasn't going to be a problem now.
I sighed in relief and was just about relax a little, when I remembered that my sister was in labor.
Scoffing at myself for almost forgetting that important detail, I held Samantha's hand gently and wiped the beads of sweat on her forehead with my sleeve. She looked at me gratefully in spite of her pain, and my heart squeezed at the sight.
"Ava, your mom's calling," said Cameron and tossed me the phone. I clumsily caught and answered it, after glaring at him, of course.
"Ava Lorraine Jones! Where did you go with the kids and Samantha?!"
I cringed at my middle name and figured that she did see us.
"Mom, we're going to the hospital right now because Sa-"
As if on cue, Samantha started screaming in my ear, and I dropped the phone.
"Ow! Samantha, I understand you're in pain and all, but you didn't have to- OWW!"
"What's wrong? What happened?!" shouted Cam from the front seat.
I couldn't answer, because I was too busy trying to wrench my sister's nails from my scalp.
And as if that wasn't noisy and chaotic enough, William playfully said, "Hey Mel! I'll be Samantha, and you be Ava, ok?"
And naturally, Melanie replied, "What? No!" But that didn't stop William from his mischievous ways.
Suddenly, they started screaming and shrieking their heads off, for they started grabbing each other's hair too. I guess they thought we were playing a game.
"Cam, hurry up and get there already!"
"I'm trying, don't yell at me!"
"William, stop pulling! It really hurts!"
"Oww! You're supposed to be Ava! You can't pull my hair!"
"Kids! Stop hurting each other!"
By the time we reached the hospital, everyone in the car was shouting and yelling, and it was a complete mess.
Somehow, we managed to get Samantha on a gurney with the help of some nurses, and soon after, we were all waiting outside the delivery room.
Since it was winter and we didn't bring the kids' coats, I brought some of mine and two pairs of sneakers from the suitcases in the car trunk and wrapped them around the shivering children.
There were no chairs to sit on, so we stood. The people that passed us gave us weird looks, and I guessed that we seemed pretty strange. The kids sure did, with my coats too big for their small frame, and especially with my sneakers on, which made them look like they had freakishly large feet.
I looked down at my own feet and was surprised to find that I was wearing the house slippers. A hand started fixing my hair, and when I lifted my gaze, I found it was Cameron.
"Your hair's all messed up," he stated as he continued to run his fingers through the tangled mass.
I thought back to Samantha pulling my hair wildly and chuckled.
Cameron softly laughed with me and said, "If that's what happens when you go into labor, then I'm gonna have to think back on those eight kids."
I gave him a 'duh' look, and he pulled me into his arms and spoke quietly, "You did a good job back there."
I rolled my eyes at his comment and replied, "Yeah, because screaming the whole car ride sure did a lot to help the birth of my nephew."
When I tried to pull back, he hugged me tighter and said, "No, really. If it was me, I probably would still be back at the kitchen, totally frozen on what to do."
I laughed and joked, "Then I guess we would have had to call Elsa to come and unfreeze you."
"No, only a nact of true love will thaw a frozen dart. That's what the trolls said," exclaimed William from beneath us.
Melanie poked him in the side and corrected him, "It's 'only an act of true love will thaw a frozen heart', not dart."
As we were all laughing at his adorable mistake, and William insisting that what he said was right, I saw Mom, Stepdad, and bro-in-law running toward us.
"Is everyone alright?" asked Mom as soon as she reached us. Mel and William raced to her -well, as fast as they could with those big coats on- and attacked her with hugs.
"Is Samantha already in the delivery room?" asked bro-in-law and Stepdad at the same time.
When I nodded, Mom stood up from her hugging session and demanded, "Ava, you will tell me everything that happened after Samantha delivers my grandson."
Pointing to Cameron, she said, "And you, sir, were driving too slow for a person who has a woman in labor in the backseat. What if-"
I put my hands on her shoulders to stop her and cut in, "Ok, ok, Mom. He's sorry for only driving ten over the speed limit, when he should've driven 20 over."
Stepdad chuckled at my statement and placed a hand on Cameron's shoulder good-heartedly.
Mom faced me and started, "Now you, young lady-"
But again, I cut her off and almost shouted, "You better hurry in there, or you're gonna miss the disgusting scene of your grandson being born. No offense, Theo."
After slapping me on the arm for that remark, she and bro-in-law hastily went into the delivery room, leaving the rest of us to smile at her well-meant nagging and wait outside anxiously.
Five hours and 53 minutes of rock-paper-scissors, London bridge is falling down, and fighting over whose turn it was to play Angry Birds later, a nurse came out of the room.
Being assailed with questions from all five of us, she was bewildered for a moment, but easily snapping out of it, she informed us, "Yes, the baby was born fine. It was just like any other delivery. Although the baby isn't considered premature since he was born after his 37th week, we'll still have to take some medical tests because he was born early term. Other than that, he seems to be ok."
With that, the nurse excused herself back to the room, and I slumped against the wall. Finally, the little squirrel was born.
"You're an aunt and an uncle now!" I heard Stepdad say to Mel and William.
William looked up with a surprised face and asked, "Does that mean I have to change his diapers?"
