Chapter 2
A cobblestone walkway lined with pine and oak trees lead to the front door. Spherical cage lanterns hung next to the door and from the trees. It lit our path to the front door. I walked close to Blake's side. I kept daydreaming when I looked into his caramel eyes. It was easy to get lost in them. We stopped at the door. Even the door was scary: it looked almost ten feet tall, with its peeling black paint and frowning knocker. It was already dark outside. I saw a full moon shining faintly behind the clouds. There were some stars, although it was hard to tell with the clouds. I looked at Blake, and he looked at me with a smile. He winked at me, and I couldn't help but blush. He turned his attention to the door and knocked. I looked at my feet, which I could barely see in the dark. I looked back up to see a tall, slim lady glaring first at Blake and then at me. She looked around late thirties. She had a black dress on, diamond earrings, and short red hair. She had disturbing eyes-- they were dark, almost pitch black. I smiled, and put my hand out. She glanced at my hand and didn't smile, instead choosing to scowl at me in disgust. I frowned, and pulled my hand back.
"Well, about time you got here. Why are you still staring at me? Get in here." She looked irritated at us.
I said a simple "Sorry, ma'am."
She frowned at me. "Well, I'm leaving. My husband is already at the restaurant. Goodbye." She pushed us out of the way, shutting the door behind her, and that was that.
"Well, then. That was weird," I said, still frowning. Blake opened his mouth, but before he could speak, a girl came into the room. She looked around thirteen. Her emerald eyes glistened in the light. Her hair was dark brown, almost to the point of being black, and it hung loosely over her shoulders. Her pale skin was scattered with freckles. She had a determined expression on her small, pointy-nosed face. Shortly after, a boy came in behind her. His hair, dark and lustrous, had a sheen like fine hardwood. But that comparison wasn't entirely fair, I supposed. Hardwood didn't swish gently like his hair did, swaying with every word he spoke. A shiny varnish caught the light around it, but the depths of that deep chestnut brown reflected all the radiance of his smile. He had deep, dark eyes that were blue like the ocean.
"Hi, kids. I'm Alyssa and this is Blake. We're your babysitters."
The boy just kept staring at me. He was licking his lips. I didn't want to know what that meant. His eyes dilated. I looked at the girl and saw that she was gone. I was getting freaked out. I looked at Blake, and his eyes widened.
Once I looked back at the the boy, where there was now a wolf. It stood on all fours and its yellow slitted eyes stared at Blake then at me. The wolf's fur was white as ivory. It bared its dagger-like teeth at Blake and me. Its growl sounded like a loud motorcycle engine. I walked backwards slowly until I hit the door. I saw in the corner of my eye Blake was next to me, so close I could hear him breathe. I didn't know what happen to the girl. I only saw the giant hairy beast in front of me.
It was breathing heavily, licking its lips as if it were planning to eat us. I put my hand behind me until I felt the door knob. I turned it slowly, but the beast pricked its ears up. It moved slowly toward us. Its fangs were showing, saliva dripping from its frothing mouth. I quickly opened the door. I turned around, and ran out the front door.
Blake was behind me. He hurried and shut the door behind him. I heard a big thud as beast hit the door. I heard it scratching at the door like a puppy.
I ran down the driveway, Blake right behind me, until I stopped dead in my tracks. The giant, hairy, wolf pounced out of the tree branches-- wait, this one was different. It stood on two legs and it's yellow slitted eyes stared into my own blue eyes. This wolf's fur was jet black.
I backed away slowly, hoping it wouldn't come after me. I turned to my right and ran, Blake on my tail. I could hear him behind me. I could feel my heart pumping, seeming to rip itself apart; I could sense everything and hear everything, and there was no fatigue, just the firing of nerve impulse and the whoosh of air into my lungs.
Didn't they call this adrenaline? It was pitch black outside, but I could hear the beasts howling behind us. I didn't know if we were going to make it. I kept thinking I should tell Blake how I feel just in case we died tonight. I looked at him beside me; I could barely see him, but I knew he was there. I could hear him breathing heavily.
"Blake."
"Alyssa."
"I...I'm really sorry about...this...I just didn't expect...this to happen." I could feel myself blush. I was losing my breath, and I felt like I was going to faint. I was on the softball team but I'm not that great at running.
"It's okay, let's not talk right now. They can probably hear us."
"Okay." I looked up and saw the full moon behind the clouds. I knew we were going to die. I could hear the wolves coming closer, and before I knew it, something sent us flying through the air.
