Chapter 17: The great day dawned

Everyone sat on either side of the aisle. Awaiting their arrival.

The French monarchy were all overwhelmed with joy and could not seem to contain it.

No one could.

They all sat in their best gowns and uniforms, the front of the aisle empty, save for the priest who was going to perform the ceremony. Suddenly the sound of music filled the great hall, causing everyone to stand up and look towards the open doors.

Just as they all turned to look, two shadows approached them.

King Alexander of France with Queen Isabelle of Scotland by his side.

Both of them had their arms linked together as they walked down the aisle. Isabelle looked etheral in her flowing white wedding gown with intricate silver embroidary on it. Her veil covering the obvious nerveousness displayed on her features. Her crown resting proudly on her head.

Alexander was nothing less than Isabelle. He proudly wore his uniform, completed with his medels of honor, and valor. His crown resting on his head, both of them giving off an aura of pure adoration for each other, and authority. Smiling, both of them stood facing eachother, their fingers interwined together.

The priest told everyone to settle down, and they did as told. Soon he started to speak as both Alexander and Isabelle were losted in eachother's eyes. Pulling a blind eye to the rest of the world.

Soon it was their turn to recite their vows.

"I, Isabelle Stewart take thee Alexander Valois, to be my lawfully wedded husband, secure in the knowledge that you will be my constant friend, my faithful partner in life, and my one true love." Isabelle recited, her eyes moist with tears of happiness.

"On this special day, I give to you in the presence of God and all these witnesses my pledge to stay by your side as your faithful wife in sickness and in health, in joy and in sorrow, as well as through the good times and the bad." While saying that her tears started to flow down her face as Alexander wiped them away.

"I promise to love you without reservation, comfort you in times of distress, encourage you to achieve all of your goals, laugh with you and cry with you, grow with you in mind and spirit, always be open and honest with you, and cherish you for as long as we both shall live." Isabelle finished as she placed a plain silver band around his finger, the guest all applauding loudly.

Alexander finished as he placed a beautifully sophisticated diamond ring onto Isabelle's fingers as tears of elation slipped down her rosy cheeks.

"You may now kiss your bride." The preist said as he took a step back. Instantly Alexander wrapped his arm around her waist and connected their lips in a passionate kiss. Instantly everyone stood up from their seats and applauded loudly, while Nathan and Theodore hooted loudly. Once the couple pulled away from each other they offered broad smiles and enthusiastic waves to everyone gathered there for them today.

The room buzzed with excited chatter and children ran between the tables in a good natured game of tag. Then the bride and groom entered, applause spread across the room. There was the scraping of chairs as people got up for a standing ovation and the happy couple made their way to the head table, smiling and holding hands.

They sat in front of a bouquet of baby pink roses and the groom leaned in for a kiss. There were cheers and someone whooped. After a few moments the toastmaster, Alexander's best man-Theodore- rose from his chair and everyone else sat down. The sound of his teaspoon rapping on the side of his wineglass signalled everyone to silence, except the children who were shushed by their parents.

"Well Alex, I hope you made the most of your speech...now you're a married man that'll be the last time you get to speak for 3 minutes without being interrupted!" This caused an aproar of laughter from every direction, including the groom and bride

"Good afternoon Boys and Girls. For those of you that don't know me, my name's Theodore, and I've had the privilege of being Alex's best man. I hope you've all enjoyed the day so for, and I think you'll all agree... at the church today the bride looked absolutely stunning!"

"You know, it's been said that being asked to be best man. It's a great honour but you don't really want to do it!

But here I am, and I think you'll agree that my first job, of getting this man to the church, on time and sober, was a complete success! Now it's time for my second job, the speech, and this is the bit I've REALLY been looking forward to!!

Well, what can I tell you about the groom? I've know him for my entire life, and that is alot. he's
Handsome,
Intelligent,
Witty,
Charismatic..

Sorry, wrong wedding." This caused another fit of laughter.

"Anyways. I remember the first time I met Isabelle. Oh, I was instantly captivated by her beauty, and then the look of infuriation and possessiveness on Alexander's face when I was talking about her to him. Those were good times. Isabelle. I swear, you have changed this man. For the better. He needed someone like you in his life, someone who can keep him on a leash."

"They both have had their up's and down's, but look at them now! Stronger and more in love than ever! But, as I know that everyone wants to listen to me some more, I should be finishing my speech before Alexander decides that he has had enough and kills me. Which is very likely right about now. I shall finish my speech with a few wise words to the couple."

"Alexander. Isabelle. Marriage isn't a ring worn or a paper signed. It is not something endured, but savoured. It is the union of two hearts beating as one, each that would sacrifice for the other's happiness and wellbeing. Marriage is something so beautiful that in that natural world it would be an opening rose, always with radiant petals left to unfurl to a warm sun."

"Perhaps that is why we give roses to those we love and often have them at our sacred unions. Marriage is the blessing we give to one another, an eternal bond of soul-mates." Theodore said kindly as he made Alexander and Isabelle stand.

"The best thing to hold onto in life is each other." Theodore finished as he interwined their hands. Just as he finished, both Isabelle and Alexander hugged the life out of him.

"When did you become so philosophical?" Alexander laughed in his ear to be heard over the loud uproar of applause and tears.

"I always was philosophical. You just failed to notice it." Theodore boasted as Alexander rolled his eyes in exasperation and Isabelle kissed Theo's cheek in appreciation.

Soon the music started to play as Alexander led Isabelle to the center of the floor, wrapping an arm around her waist and leading the dance. Both of them lost in their own little world of joy, never realizing that people had come to join them on the dance floor, dancing alongside the new King and Queen of France and Scotland.

Sunlight filtered in through the cracks of the curtains, softly illuminating the chamber's slumbering inhabitants. Isabelle lay on top of Alexander, her head tucked under his chin as their arms were wrapped around eachother. Isabelle snuggled closer to Alexander, as he tightened his grip around her.

"Alexander." Isabelle called out sleepily as he hummed in response, both of them awake now. "I'm hungry."

Just as she said that, her stomach growled in confirmation causing Alexander to chuckle sleepily.

With a groan he shifted them so that now Isabelle was beneath him, with is head tucked under her chin.

"My hunger hasn't gone away you know." Isabelle mumbelled after a moment of silence, her statement causing Alexander to chuckle.

"Before we can go down, we need to be clothed, which we currently aren't. So I suggest that we wear something presentable and then go down for breakfast."

Groaning, Isabelle knew he was right. Getting off the bed, they both got dressed, then went down for breakfast, being greeted and congratulated on their wedding by everyone they passed by.

By the time they reached the dinning hall, they were hoping that they wouldn't have to be congratulated anymore, but were sorely mistaken. The moment they entered, they were tackled by the French monarchy that kept on congratulating them. Once they all pulled away from the newly married couple, they told them to come and sit down.

Isabelle's gaze snapped up towards her mother who stood in a dark corner, a sad smile on her face as she gave a nod of acknowladgement, which was returned by a nod by Isabelle.

All the royals sat down, Alexander at the head of the table, with Isabelle sitting oppsosite him, all of them chatting as they enjoyed breakfast. Suddenly everything fell silent when Alexander cleared his thraot.

"Isabelle, amour?" Alexander called out, instantly gaining Isabelle's attention.

"Would you and your mother like to accompany me to the market square later this evening?"

Instantly a smile lit up Isabelle's face as she vigerously nodded her head, since she had food in her mouth.

"We would love to!" Isabelle exclaimed after quickly swallowing, causing a smile to grace Alexander's lips at her antics. Despite her being 20 years old now, she still had the girlish antics left in her.

Alexander and Isabelle strolled hand in hand through the market place, looking at the different assortment of merchendise the market had to offer during the summer time, their cloaks pulled up to cover their faces. Queen Mary trailing behind them with the guards close by her.

Queen Mary looked around the bustling marketplace, remembering all the times that she and Andreas strolled through markets, just like these, hand in hand, just like Alexander and Isabelle in front of her.

A panicked scream jolted the Queen out of her thought. Looking up, she saw Isabelle restrained by a cloaked figure. His arm was wrapped around her neck, a dagger pressed under her chin. Alexander standing in front of the two, he held up a hand to stop the guards from advancing.

"Well, look at what a pretty ring this girl here is wearing." The man sneered at Alexander. Mary felt goosebumps travel down her arms. Alexander composed his posture and glared at him.

"Let go of my wife." Alexander commanded calmly as the people around them watched in panic.

"Not unless you empty your pockets and hand me all your valuables."

Alexander scoffed then laughed at the man, who growled then pressed the dagger deeper into Isabelle's skin, causing her to struggle against him, due to which Alexander instantly stopped laughing.

"You can't ask your king to hand over all of his valuables." Alexander chastisied as he took off the cloak, causing everyone present to gasp and bow to him.

"You are not my King!" The man yelled defiantly.

"Well, I noticed that. But will you let my wife go?"

"Never!"

"Alright." Alexander sighed dejectedly. "I was hoping it wouldn't come down to this."

Just as he said that, Isabelle brought her elbow up, hitting him on the jaw, causing the man to let her go and stagger back as he held his jaw. Instantly Isabelle crouched down a Alexander threw a dagger at the man, causing it to hit him on the shoulder. The man straightened, his hood having fallen off, showing a tuft of dark brown hair as he inspected the dagger in his shoulder.

"This time I won't miss." Alexander hissed as the man looked up at the two. Alexander brought back his arm, prepearing to throw the dagger again, aiming for his heart.

"STOP!" Queen Mary yelled as she protectively stood in front of the man, who was looking at her incrediously.

"Mary! Get out of the way!" Alexander yelled in aggitation.

"No! You will not let you harm my Andreas!"
