Birthday Kisses

"Damn this cold," Law muttered as he buried his face further into the fluffy collar of his coat.

It was a chilly evening in early October and Law was making his way home. The biting winds had already tinted the tips of his nose and ears a light shade of red and his teeth chattered slightly in the freezing cold air that surrounded him. His hair was decorated with small white specks of snow that fluttered down from the dark grey clouds that loomed above his walking figure. As a result, his hair was slightly damp from the snowflakes that had already melted from his body heat. He pulled his hand out of his pocket and ruffled it through his black mop in order to free the snow that was still clinging to the ends of his hair.

As he was walking, he pulled out his phone and looked at it with a frown.

"I know he's usually not one for remembering things, but he could have at least called or sent me a text," Law sighed, putting his phone away once more as he focused his angry gaze on the path in front of him.

His footsteps became more heavy and he noticed that people he was walking past were giving him quizzical looks and some were even whispering to the others they were walking with. Law simply ignored them, wanting more than anything to get home and shut the world out.

He turned around the corner leading onto the street that his small house was on, when he noticed a shadow on his doorstep. Continuing walking, his eyebrows furrowed as the shadow slowly formed into the shape of a person. They were sat, hunched over on his front step and Law could see them shaking lightly in the cold air.

He came to the path leading up to his house when he finally realised that it wasn't just any old person sat there...

"Luffy?" Law called.

Luffy's head snapped up immediately upon hearing his name spoken by that mellow voice. His wide eyes locked onto Law's and a huge smile spread across his mouth, looking like a puppy who's owner had just returned home.

"What are doing here?" Law asked.

"Waiting for you of course!" Luffy answered with a laugh.

Law looked at him properly and saw the snow that had practically formed a new layer upon Luffy's head. His nose and ears were a bright scarlet colour and Law could now see him shaking a lot more violently than he had originally thought.

"Luffy, you idiot," Law huffed.

He walked up the path as Luffy stood up to greet him. Law pulled him into his chest in a tight hug, brushing the snow from the top of his head as he did so.

"Ah, Traffy you're so warm!" Luffy sighed, nuzzling further into him.

"And you're cold. I had to stay late at work to finish some work, but I could have come home if I knew you were here. Why didn't you call?" Law asked.

"My phone broke," Luffy snickered.

"Again?"

"Hey, it was Sanji's fault!"

"It's never your fault is it? Whatever, come on, let's get you inside,"

Law picked Luffy up then before flinging him over his shoulder. Luffy squealed slightly with shock, but soon loosened up and flopped properly over Law's shoulder, his black hair hanging down in front of his face. Luffy's backpack was a lot fuller and bulkier than usual, but Law could still easily manage the weight of his small companion.

With one hand positioned on Luffy to keep him from falling, Law reached into his pocket with his free hand and soon found his keys. He let both of them in before flicking on the lights in the hallway and making his way into the living room before doing the same. He threw Luffy down onto the couch who landed with a small thump and a giggle.

"You need to get your phone fixed so something like this doesn't happen again. I don't like the thought of you waiting for hours in the cold," Law said, shaking his hair free of snow as he went to go hang up his coat.

"I didn't mind, honestly! I just wanted to see you," Luffy snickered.

"Hey, Luffy?"

"Yeah?"

"What day is it?"

"Thursday! Why?"

Law paused for a moment, his hand gripping the coat that was now hanging from its peg. He sighed deeply, his heart sinking in his chest somewhat.

"Nothing, it doesn't matter. I'm gonna go get in the bath, OK? Go and grab a blanket from the bedroom to warm yourself up,"

"OK~!" Luffy trilled in response.

Law walked upstairs and into the bathroom before beginning to run his bath. He sat on the edge of the bath, listening to the sound of the running water coming from the tap.

"I guess he really did forget," Law whispered, his eyes falling on his hands which were wringing around one another.

He growled with anger at himself for getting so stupid about it. It was Luffy after all, what exactly was he expecting?

With another sigh he stood up and began to undress before stepping into the bath. He submerged himself beneath the water so that only his head was above the water. He lazily dragged his finger across his chest as the steam rose, tracing the pattern of his heart tattoo.

Corazon would always make a big fuss out of today... Even if Law protested, he would be spoiled and drowned in gifts. Of course, that was when he was a child so it was only to be expected, but he still couldn't help but feel a slight pang of sadness within his chest.

Deciding to push the thought of his mind to save himself getting himself down anymore, he closed his eyes and leaned his head back.

A little while later, he heard a huge crash coming from downstairs. He sat up with a start and his eyes were wide and alert. Just what had that idiot done now?

"Luffy? What are you doing down there?!" Law yelled.

"Nothing! Don't worry, I just knocked something over!" Luffy called back, his awkward laugh echoing through the hallways.

"Want me to come help-?"

"NO!" Luffy answered a little too quickly. "Just stay there, OK? I promise it's nothing!"

"Whatever you say," Law replied, a little skeptically.

He leaned back once more, but his ears were pricked for the slightest sounds coming from downstairs. If he listened carefully, he could hear Luffy's quiet muttering and the sounds of things being moved about in the living room.

Law furrowed his eyebrows, but stayed where he was as he had been told.

A little while later again he saw the shadow of Luffy running past in the hallway, giggling quietly to himself. He heard noises coming from his bedroom and even in the hallway right outside where the bathroom was situated.

"Luffy what are you up to?" Law called.

"I'm grabbing a blanket like you told me to!" Luffy replied, but Law could hear him holding back his laughter. "Are you nearly done?"

"I'm just about to get out,"

"Just wait there a sec!"

He heard the quiet scampering of Luffy's feet and his childish laugh as he galloped down the stairs and closed the living room door.

"OK! You can get out now!" Luffy shouted from within the now closed off living room.

"What's he planning?" Law asked himself as he pulled the plug and got out of the bath.

He dried himself off before getting dressed into his bed clothes and opening the door leading to the hallway. As he stepped out he nearly tripped over what Luffy had left on the floor directly in front of the door. Looking down, Law saw a Nerf gun sat there, fully loaded and with a note attached to it.

He leaned down and picked it up before beginning to read the note that was written in Luffy's familiar scrawl:

"Dear Traffy,

I hope you're ready for a battle to the death! I'm hiding somewhere in the house, but to get to me you will have to follow the directions I have laid out for you all around the house.

If you manage to find me and defeat me with the Nerf gun then there will be a big surprise for you! Of course, there are many other surprises hidden around the house. Can you find them all?

Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favour~

Love you, Luffy x"

Law couldn't help but smile at this. This was typical Luffy and although his childish actions and games always drove him to the point of insanity, he couldn't deny that Luffy could make him smile better than anybody else.

Deciding to humour Luffy, Law made sure his gun was fully prepped and ready to fire before looking up. There was an arrow pointing towards the bedroom stuck to the wall facing the bathroom and so Law followed it.

The bedroom door had been plastered with a sign reading, "Surprise one". Law pushed open the door and saw a picture frame sat upon the bed. He padded across the carpet towards it before picking it up and looking at it.

It was quite a large, expensive-looking picture frame, with a lot of different sections for different pictures to go in. Looking closely, Law could see that all of the frames were filled with pictures of him and Luffy. Almost all of the pictures were ones that Luffy had taken on his phone of the two of them, resulting in Law looking like he was going to kill someone and Luffy looking like a radiant beam of sun in comparison.

But there was one picture in particular that made Law smile lovingly... The largest picture of them all was one directly in the centre of the frame. It was one that Nami had taken on their trip to Paris last year of Luffy and Law kissing in front of the River Seine. The picture was taken in the evening and the sky was a beautiful shade of the inky blueness of the encroaching night and the bright red and pink of the setting sun. In the picture you could see Luffy stood on his tiptoes to reach Law's lips and you could even see the corners of Law's lips curled into a smile within the kiss.

There was a note attached to the frame that read: "Traffy's favourite places".

Law's heart swelled as he put the frame down once more lest it get broken in the kerfuffle that would no doubt ensue when Law finally found Luffy. He left the bedroom and found another arrow leading him into Law's office.

Pushing open the door he saw piles of books and what looked to be DVD's sat on the desk, illuminated in the desk light that Luffy must have accidentally left on. He walked over and began to analyse the covers of each book and movie. He soon noticed a pattern... They were books that Law had nonchalantly mentioned he had wanted to buy and the movies were ones that Law had also mentioned he wanted to see but they were mixed in with some of his favorites.

"I can't believe he actually listened to me," Law smirked.

Just like with the picture frame, there was a note lying on the desk near to the piles. He picked up and saw it read: "Traffy's favourite books/movies".

Law shook his head, unable to stop the beaming smile that had been stuck to his face ever since he left the bathroom.

He left the office, finding another arrow leading him to the staircase. He descended the stairs, fingers still prepped on the trigger of his gun in case Luffy got impatient and decided to jump out at him out of the blue.

He followed Luffy's directions once he was downstairs and found himself in the kitchen were there sat a plate. Upon the plate were a huge pile of rice-balls and yet another note carefully balanced on top of the pile.

Law walked over with a smile, already knowing this note was going to say: "Traffy's favourite food".

Looking up he saw the arrows were now leading into the living room and so a mischievous smirk slipped across Law's lips. He shoved one of the rice-balls into his mouth before grabbing his Nerf gun with both hands.

Leaving the kitchen as quietly as possible, Law crept like a hunter stalking its prey down the hallway, hardly making any noise at all. He soon came to the closed door leading into the living room and so readied himself in a suitable stance.

After waiting for as long as he thought it would take to catch Luffy off guard, he threw open the door to the living room and pointed his gun out in front of him. But once he had entered the room, he couldn't help but burst out into a fit of laughter.

Luffy had stripped the couches of all of their cushions and had managed to construct a huge pillow fortress that practically took up the entire room. The coffee tables and couch frames had been pushed to the side so that Law had full access to the fort that Luffy was no doubt hiding within.

"He's open!" Luffy's voice called out as a gun poked out of one of the gaps in the fort.

Law was hit with a small foam pellet and so he tried to stop laughing in order to get back into the game.

"I'm not going down that easily!" Law shouted, firing at the hand that had protruded from within the fort.

The hand quickly went back inside and Law saw Luffy's wide eyes peer over the top of one of the cushions.

"You can't get me in here, Traffy! My fortress is impenetrable!" Luffy called triumphantly.

"Oh yeah?" Law smirked.

He quickly ran over to the fortress and pulled down what he could only assume was the "door" leading into the main body. Luffy was sat inside among all of the small cushions that had previously been positioned upon the bigger couch cushions, but he was ready for Law's arrival. His gun was pointed upwards directly at Law's face and as soon as he had pulled open the fortress, Luffy had fired.

The foam pellet hit Law on the forehead, confusing him slightly and allowing Luffy to leap up and tackle him to the ground.

"The great Straw Hat has the upper hand over the Surgeon of Death!" he laughed loudly.

Law grabbed Luffy's waist then and threw him onto the floor instead, straddling him and grabbing his gun once again.

"But the Surgeon of Death easily brings it back and is preparing to annihilate the puny Straw Hat!" Law announced, closing one of his eyes as he took aim at Luffy.

He fired at Luffy's stomach who couldn't fight back against the weight of Law sat on top of him.

"I will never give up!" Luffy called bravely.

"That so?" Law inquired, throwing his gun to the side.

He leaned down then and began to tickle Luffy. The latter yelped with fright but that soon became mixed in with his giggles. Luffy tried to yell at Law to stop, but his words of protest were drowned out by his snorts of laughter and the tears that were quickly forming in his eyes. He was wiggling and squirming in Law's grip, but Law was much heavier and so there was no way he was going anywhere.

"OK, OK, you win!" Luffy gasped after he could take no more.

Law released him from his relentless grasp and smirked at his victory.

"I know your weakness," Law told him as he lay back down on the floor.

"I only let you win because it's your birthday," Luffy said, pulling tongues at him.

"So you didn't forget," Law said quietly, a smile coming to his face.

"How could I forget? I would never forget something as important as this!" Luffy answered, looking at Law with a toothed grin.

Luffy sat up then and crawled over to Law. He clambered on top of him before looking down at the older boy lay beneath him.

"Happy birthday, Traffy," he said in a voice gentler than usual, a sincere smile spreading across his mouth.

He leaned down and gently kissed Law, the sweet electrifying sensation that he yearned for filling his entire body. He caressed his cheek and pulled himself further into his lover.

"So what's the final surprise?" Law asked when he pulled away.

"Me of course! Traffy's favourite person!" Luffy laughed, cocking his head to the side cutely.

"Well, you're not wrong," Law smiled in response.

He looked at Luffy's goofy smile and the childish shine that seemed to be a permanent feature of his wide, circle eyes. His charcoal hair flopped in front of his face and Luffy seemed to be constantly shaking it out of his face, scrunching up his nose at the ticklish sensation.

Law reached up and tucked some of his strands behind his ear and looked up at the beautiful figure smiling down at him from above.

Every time he looked at Luffy he fell in love with him all over again... You could never get tired of looking at a face like Luffy's.

His small ray of sunshine never ceased to amaze him and make him feel like maybe everything wasn't as bad as it seemed.
