Chapter 48

Trigger warning: blood, gore, talk of death

“Okay guys I would like to introduce the newest member of our family,” One of the matrons said from the front of the play room. Vigil couldn’t really be bothered to listen. He was sitting in the back coloring. His childish drawing was hard to decipher, but he knew what it was. It was a little  black doggy walking around the woods. The doggy was happy because he had found his family. Virgil had never had a real family, but he supposed for now Mary was enough. As he drew a shadow covered up his work. He grumbled and looked up. In front of him was a small girl with strawberry blond hair that was pulled into small pig-tails. Her face was covered in freckles. She wore a white dress with purple and pink poke-a-dots all over it. She beamed at seeing him.

“Hi there! I’m Molly!” She said very chiper.

Virgil clammed up, not many kids ever wanted to talk to him. He was the quiet kid in the corner. “Uh, hi…” Virgil said timidly.

“I’m new here, so I don’t have any friends. In fact, I have never had a real friend before, other than mama and papa. Would you be my friend?” Molly asked enthusiastically.

Virgil wasn’t opposed to the idea but, “there are plenty other kids you would like playing with better than me. Everyone says I’m no fun.”

Molly’s tiny fist balled together,”That’s not nice. What meanies!” Tiney rage flowing from her. “I bet you are the mostest funest ever!” She said matter-of-factly.

“If you're sure… I guess we can be friends.” Virgil conceded.

“Yay!” Molly cheered. “I have a friend! I have a friend! You’re my best friend!” Virgil felt a smile tugging at his lips as she danced around him happily.

She suddenly stopped in front of him and tilted her head curiously, “Hey Virgil?” Wait when did he tell her his name? “If we are best friends… Why did you not save me?” She asked.

Virgil blinked in shock.

“What?” He said confused.

“Why did you let that monter take me? You let him hurt me. You let him kill me.” The bright colors around the playrooms stated to melt and blurr away as they were surrounded by gray cold concrete. Little Molly still stood before him, but now Virgil was all grown up. “Virgie why did you let me die?” She asked as blood started to flow from her lips.

“I-I…” Virgil started to back away from her. Hugging himself.

“You could have stopped him.” Virgil spun around to see a thirteen year old Molly wearing the pajamas she had on the night she disappeared. “He took me because of you. He broke me. It’s your fault.” Her skin started to turn black and blue with newly formed bruises. Her hair getting tangled and knotted. Her cute little pajama’s ripping and tearing. Blood oozing from fresh wounds.

Virgil was shaking violently. His heart beating out of his chest. His eyes stinging with tears. “No, I didn’t know! I didn’t know! I would have helped! If I had known!”

“You could have saved me.” Virgil turned again to see Molly the age she is now. She was ghostly pale, her eyes dull and lifeless, red staining down her chin. Her tattered whit dress red with her blood. A giant hole in her middle. “You let him live. So I died! It’s all your fault.”

Virgil sunk to his knees, his breathing ragged. He squeezed his eyes tight  and he tried to cover his ears.

“Your fault!”

“You let him kill me!”

“You could have saved me!”

“Your fault!”

“Broke me!”

“Hurt me!”

“Your fault!”

Virgil screamed as her voice swirled around him! A huge pulse of power shot out from him and all of a sudden it all stopped. He glanced up to see Molly standing there. She looked back to normal, her skin wasn’t pale and her eyes were bright. She had a huge smile on her face.

“I’m fine Virgil, I promise.” She tilted her head like she heard something and then took off running. Virgil scrambled to his feet to follow, but it felt like he was trying to move through syrup. He just couldn't make his limbs move.

“Molly wait! Please wait! Please don’t leave!” Virgil cried desperately.

Molly started to fade into the darkness, as Virgil cried out for her.

“Virgil!” He heard another voice call. The scene around him shifted. He was back in the room where he had last seen his mother. She was there and so was Mary. They both looked surprised to him there, but they were more concerned about how he was shaking like a leaf, tears stains fresh on his face.

Upon spotting them he rushed into the arms of the one standing closest. That was Selene. He engulfed her in his embrace and sobbed into her shoulder. She froze up a bit. She looked at Mary for help. She didn’t know what to do. She had never had to comfort her son before. Mary just smiled in response. Guess she was on her own in figuring this out. Selene gently started carting her fingers through Virgil hair. Soothing him as he cried.

“I’m sorry!” He cried. “She’s gone and it is all my fault! I didn’t do what you told me! I couldn’t… I couldn’t kill him, but now she’s gone!” Virgil whimpered, his voice breaking in some places.

“Shh, it’s okay Virgil, I’m not upset. I am actually really proud of you!” Selene spoke. Virgil froze up a bit. “You followed your heart, and made the decision that was right for you. I am glad you didn’t listen to me.”

“But, Molly she’s gone,” Virgil said pulling away, “and it’s my fault!”

Selene brushed his hair out of his face, “No baby, it’s not your fault.” She glanced at Mary who nodded, “I think you need to wake up now.” She said gently.

“I- I can’t how can I face her friends! How can I face my pack!” Virgil stated.

“You’ll be okay. Roman misses you. He’s been worried sick. He’s waiting.” Selene said softly.

“Roman…” Virgil said his eyes widening. Oh godess how he missed Roman.

Selene smiled at Virgil as she watched his eyes get big. Laughing slightly she kissed his head. Soon after the Virgil world went dark.
