Chapter 3

The trio spoke for a while, Patton trying to calm Virgil down and getting him cleaned up so it didn’t look like he had been crying. Eventually, the bell rang. However, it wasn’t the late bell for the next class or the next. It was the bell signalling that it was lunch time. They had been in the closet a lot longer than they thought, and time really gets away from you when you are crying your eyes out and are scared out of your mind. Virgil cursed himself for missing two classes on his first day. How the hell was he supposed to explain that?

They were about to leave the room when a patch of silver around Virgil neck caught Logan’s eyes. “Virgil what are you wearing around your neck.” He asked.

Virgil looked down at his necklace and grimaced slightly upon seeing it. “A necklace?” He said like a question.

“Yes indeed, I can see that. Perhaps a better question would be where did you acquire that necklace.” Logan elaborated.

“Um, why do you care?” Virgil asked skeptical his eyebrows furrowing.

“Oh, would you just humor me and answer the question?” Logan replied exasperated.

“Fine if you must know, I have always had it. I was abandoned at an orphanage as an infant and this was the only thing I was left with, hence my name.” He said holding it up for the others to see.  “Now if you are done dragging me into dark closets and interrogating me on things I am gonna go, before I miss anymore of my classes.” After calming down he was very annoyed that he had let his walls down in his fear. He wasn’t supposed to get too close to anyone again. Sure he just met these two, but they were already too close for comfort. So, Virgil was leaving and fast.

Before the other two really had time to talk he opened the door and darted out into the hallway. He quickly went to the cafeteria where he grabbed an apple, then went in search of an uncrowded area where he could sit and relax for the rest of lunch. Virgil let out a sigh as he settled down on a un occupied bench outside and far away from the rest of the student body. This should be a good place to hide from society for at least a little while.

“Hey, Virgil!”

Well, it was good while it lasted. Virgil looked up to see that Patton was running up to him. “What are you doing over here all by your lonesome?” Patton asked tilting his head like a puppy. “Shouldn’t you try to meet some new people? You know being new and all.”

“I don’t like people.” Virgil said coldly.

“Aww, does that mean you don’t like me.” Patton asked pointing his finger at himself with a pout.

“Not particularly.” He said with no remorse. Patton frowned, “I mean how could I like someone I just met. That makes no sense.” He mumbled under his breath so Patton couldn’t hear.

“Well I like you, even if we just met!” Patton said happily like he was a child. Virgil looked at him in surprise. He thought for sure he had said that quite enough that the other wouldn’t be able to hear, but he decided not to bring that up and scoffed instead.

“Ya, no. One: you don’t know me well enough to like me. Two: I’m not a likeable person. And three: Why are you talking to me anyways?” Virgil stated dully.

Patton seemed disheartened at first ducking his head sadly before he suddenly perked back up with a silly yet devious grin on his face. “Well if I don’t know you well enough, I guess I’m just going to have to get to know you better.” He said avoiding Virgil’s question.

Virgil flinched slightly at the idea and gave a humorless laugh. “Yeah, good luck, you’re gonna need it.”  He said sarcastically.

Either not catching the sarcasm or electing to ignore it Patton smiled brightly “Thanks!”

Virgil rolled his eyes. “So where is the Walking Iceberg.”

Patton furrowed his eyebrows in confusion not sure who Virgil was talking about at first before he realized. “Oh! You mean Logan?” Patton asked to confirm it with Virgil. Virgil nodded. “He is... “ Patton paused for a second getting a far off look in his eyes before his eyes cleared and he finished. “He’s with our Al-... other friend Roman. Apparently has some stuff they need to talk about. I don’t think Roman is very happy about it at the moment, but hopefully he’ll come around to the idea.”

“Teenage drama?” Virgil asked like he wasn’t a teenager himself.

Patton smiled “Something like that… Also I know Lo can be kind of cold at first, but I swear he isn’t that bad. He can actually be really sweet, and kind, and he would do anything his, pa- friends.”

“You know you do that a lot.” Virgil said.

“Do what a lot?” Patton asked a look of apprehension crossing his face as his shoulders tightened.

“You know, start saying something and switch it last second. Like just now you said ‘pa’ and then switched to ‘friends’. What were you going to refer to yourself in the third person or something?”

Patton looked uneasy. “Or something.” Virgil furrowed his brow and tilted his head slightly, but decided he didn’t care enough to push.

“So, you were telling me how Logan isn’t that bad and how he is ‘nice and sweet’. Ya sorry if I find that hard to believe after he interrogated me and forced me to talk even when I really didn’t want to, all over something I still don’t understand. What was he talking about anyways when he said ‘our land’?”  Virgil said annoyed. He had decided that he was a little more okay talking now. Like there was kinda no point in not talking since he was already doing it the whole reason was lost, but that didn’t make what Logan did any better.

Patton seemed unsure how to answer Virgil’s question and ended up changing the conversation, much to Virgil’s annoyance.

“Virgil how old are you?”

“Seventeen. Why?”

“Oh I’m just curious. I’m eighteen, so is Logan and Roman we have fall birthdays. Speaking of which when is yours?”

“April.”

Patton nodded he looked like he was trying to solve a really difficult riddle as he sat there concentrating. “You mentioned that you were abandoned at an orphanage when you were little. How old were you?” Patton asked.

“For crying out loud! What the hell are all these questions for?” Virgil asked. In all honesty he had gotten too comfortable in the conversation. He had talked to Patton for too long. He had almost got him to drop his defenses. Nope. That ain’t happening. Virgil refused. So back up went all his walls he had been carefully crafting since The Accident.

“I was just trying to get to know you better.” Patton responded innocently.

“Why? I am sure you have plenty of friends. You definitely don’t need to be associating with me.” Virgil said aggressively.

“I just thought you might be lonely, being new and all, and I thought we could be friends.” Patton said gently hearing the anger rise in Virgil.

“Well, stop thinking! I don’t need friends! I don’t need anyone! And I definitely don’t need you!” Virgil was practically screaming at this point. He had stood up in his frustrated anger but was still facing Patton. Patton gasped his eyes darting between Virgil’s chest and his eyes.

“Virgil, kiddo, I really think you should calm down.” Patton said gently as he stood up. Holding his hands up defensively. Patton looked around to see if they were drawing any attention to themselves. Thankfully no one was really around where they were at the moment. He needed to think of something and fast. He turned back to look at Virgil. Anger was still radiating off of him. This was not good. He should probably call for some back up.

“Why should I calm down!? All you have done today is make my life a living hell! First off you and your ‘boyfriend’ glare at me all of my first class. Then you interrogate me in a dark room. Not to mention force me into a situation I was clearly uncomfortable with. You made me miss two of my classes on my first day. Yeah, like that was a good idea.  Then you show up here ask me tons of questions, and try to be my friend. News flash: if I wasn’t being obvious enough for you. I have no interest in any ‘friends’ I don’t need to waste my time.” Virgil growled.

“Maybe you might need people more than you think.” Patton said gently as he moved closer to Virgil reaching out to touch him.

“No I don’t!” Virgil screamed as he shoved Patton. His eyes widened in disbelief when he saw that Patton didn’t get pushed a little ways away, but flew almost 15 ft away. How the hell did he do that. Patton was on the ground, but rolled over and stood up quickly like the shove didn’t even faze him other than catching him off guard. Virgil was just staring at his hands in disbelief.

Patton looked at him and his eyes softened. So, Virgil really didn’t know. Poor guy. We need to help him. Patton was too caught up in his thoughts that he didn’t notice Logan, but Logan had seen Virgil shove Patton. He acted on pure instinct. He darted across the school yard within a matter of seconds placing himself between Patton and Virgil. Glaring at Virgil and holding a protective arm in front of Patton.

“Don’t you touch him.” He growled lowly at Virgil. Like actually growled. Virgil would have thought it was weird if he hadn’t been distracted by something else.

“Y-your eyes are glowing.” Virgil said in shock. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Logan’s eyes were glowing a dark blue color as he growled lowly at Virgil.

“Logi Bear, you need to calm down. It’s okay, I’m fine I promise. He didn’t hurt me.” Patton said gently as he put his hand on Logan’s back. Logan glanced at him for a second before he turned his glare back to Virgil. “Lo, please you're scaring him. He doesn’t understand.”

Logan finally looked fully back at Patton before he sighed and his eyes reverted back to normal. “My apologies, I just saw him push you and-”

“I know Logan,” Patton said cutting him off, “But I think we have a very confused pup on our hands that we need to take care of. Virgil-” Patton stopped seeing that Virgil had disappeared.

While the other two had been talking Virgil took it as his opportunity to escape and ran back into the school. Not even a minute later the bell rang signaling the end of lunch and that it was time to head to his next class. Virgil decided that whatever the heck that just happened, was obviously some sort of weird hallucination caused from stress or something, cause that could not be real. So, he decided the best thing to do was act like it never happened. And headed for his next class. Which just so happened to be art. Perfect he could relax with no stress.
