TWENTY EIGHT

years ago.

"That darned crooked bastard!" Kai's father shouted and threw all the things on his desk all over the room. "He was corrupt right from the start! I knew he didn't want to save that orphanage, he was only trying to exploit it!"

Kai knocked on the wall even though he had already opened the door and saw his father having a tantrum. "What's the problem father?"

"Kai, you came just right on time, you have to go to North Korea." His father abruptly said and went to his phone to arrange his flight immediately. Kai's eyebrows knitted together, he just came back from a mission his father just asked him to do.

He was sick of this but he had to do it so he can inherit the organization Elite, it's not like he had any enemies over the title since he was the only child but who knows? His father was a womanizer so there was a chance he had a sibling out there.

He's sure that if one appeared, he would immediately get rid of them. And to get "rid" means to "kill"

"What do I need to do, father?" He plastered on a smile, putting on a charade in front of his gullible father.

"I need you to kill this man." He handed him a picture of a north korean citizen, a politician, who was probably around 50 years old, "He has a woman with him, they're husband and wife in paper, you don't need to kill her, in fact I want you to keep her alive, got it?" His father strictly told him.

Kai only nodded but what piqued his interest was how his father gave him a very specific order to not kill the woman. Who was she? Was she of any importance to him?

"Okay, I'll do it." He simply said which earned a tap on the shoulder from his father. He needed to maintain on being in his father's good side because he knew his father. If his child, even with his own blood running through their viens, becomes useless to him, he will discard his own child — no second thought.

He needs to show how useful he is to him amidst his desire to end his father's life with his own hands.

Of course, he still can't do that. Kai was a perfectionist, all his actions were calculated, and it usually goes his way wether someone likes it or not. He never fails, not even once. And he doesn't plan to.

-

Jisung, an agent of Elite, was assigned to carry out the mission with Kai. He didn't refuse the task because, really, did he really have an option? He is basically indebted to the Kim family for allowing him to join the group; otherwise, he would be homeless.

Well, that doesn't mean he's doing all these missions because he likes to serve the organization. He was planning to stay for only 7 years and then resign.

If they'll even allow him to resign.

Both men arrived at North Korea and without time to rest, Kai persisted that they go to the location his father gave him to meet the woman he was talking about. Jisung couldn't say no so with little preparations of what to come they head to the location.

It was at the orphanage. Even though it was called an orphanage it was actually just a plain old building, abandoned, and most importantly there was no children to see — jisung thinks.

They went inside the building to inspect if there was something or someone there, not until they heard a shout outside. It was on the alleyway outside the orphanage. They rushed to where they heard shouting and they saw a woman lying on the ground, legs seems to be paralyzed, and the man Kai was ordered to kill.

The man stopped, his feet was stepping on the woman's paralyzed legs, and grabbing her hair with no mercy. Jisung was taken aback by the sight. The man, noticing them, froze in his spot as he looked at Kai with fear in his eyes.

"Shit!" The man immediately let go of the woman's hair, almost too immediately that her head flung back at the impact of how he let go of her hair. The man tried to escape but Kai immediately took his gun out from his side pockets and without even giving much effort into it, he shot the man.

It took only one try, one shot, the gun's bullet pierced the man's head without any warning. Jisung couldn't even be of much help in the situation because Kai basically didn't need his assistance for this mission.

Well, the only thing he could be useful for is preventing Kai from doing anything that doesn't follow according to the orders of Kai's father.

Kai walked to the woman whose face was pale, a trace of tears on her face, and eyes that held no life — or rather, she was prepared to die.

"Do you know my father?" Kai asked the woman. Jisung only looked in disbelief. He was going to ask a woman who was clearly still shocked of what's happening.

The woman looked at Kai in the eyes, "W...Who...?"

Kai crouched down, reaching her level, he lifted her chin up as she stared at him weakly, "Kim Wooseok. My father."

The woman's face showed emotions for the first time, although it was... fear.

The woman, despite being weak, slapped Kai's hands away from touching her chin. "Leave." She says. Kai went silent. Jisung was only watching, waiting to see if Kai would do anything stupid.

"So, you do know my father." Kai didn't seem fazed by his discovery.

"I said leave!" The woman screamed.

"I'm here because my father ordered me to, he told me to take you with me." Kai explained. The woman didn't listen as she just kept on shouting at Kai to leave.

Jisung stepped up, "Kai, I think she still hasn't processed the situation she's been in. We should give her time—"

Kai suddenly laughed. Jisung wasn't expecting that reaction from him, his eyebrows knit together as he looked at Kai who was covering his mouth with his hand and the other hand was gripping on his gun.

"Haha... this is amusing." He says, laughing, and then slowly looking up to the woman, it was obvious that the woman was wary of Kai.

A moment of silence... kai was only staring at the woman's eyes as if he was frozen in time, not being able to move.

Jisung was about to grab kai when...

he pulled the trigger.

Blood, the woman's blood, went to Jisung's face. His eyes widened, his lips trembled, and his breathing went ragged. He looked at the woman who was now dead on the spot.

Kai stood up and blinked "Did you... kill her?" He asks Jisung who was still trying to think over what had happened. Kai was blinking multiple times, waiting for Jisung's answer.

He couldn't remember anything.

"Hey, did you..." Kai's hands abruptly went to his ears, covering it, as he heard a severe ringing in his ears.

He suddenly laughed again, "Ah... right..."

Jisung looked over at Kai who's body was trembling while he was holding out his laughter.

"I killed her"

-

"You insolent bastard!" Kai's head flung back as his father threw a punch at him. He had just received word of what Kai had done during the rescue mission, but the mission ended in failure when he killed the woman.

His father proceeded to throw punches at him, he remained unfazed. Eyes dead empty. Kai couldn't differentiate reality between hallucinations. He didn't know what was going on with him.

He just knew something is wrong with him.

His father was about to throw a chair at him when he froze at the spot, his mouth gaped wide open as he had trouble catching his breath. The chair fell to the ground as he lost his grip on it. His hands clutched onto his chest.

The guards inside the room immediately went to help him and check his condition. "Huh... I guess your old age has caught up with you, father." He says.

-

Kai's father ended up with a heart condition. He was bedridden so Kai had to take over Elite even if his father was against it. Someone has to lead and he was the only heir.

The day he visited his father was also the day he found out he truth.

"Are you nearing your death yet, father? Are you seeing a light? Or maybe darkness...?" Kai says, looking at his father laying weakly on his bed. He had lost a lot of pounds, cheekbones showing, and he was already looking like a corpse.

"Bastard... you're not the one who's supposed to take over Elite." His father said in between coughs. Kai scoffed in return.

"I'm your only child, father. Who else but me?"

"You're...! You're not my child!"

Silence, Silence grew between them. Kai couldn't process what he had said, "Your mother... had an affair, you were the fruit of that affair. She just had to die when giving birth to you and I had found out far too late." He managed to explain.

"If I had known...! If only I had known, I wouldn't have raised a bastard like you!"

Kai stood up from his seat and attacked his weak father. He placed both of his hands on his father's neck and pinned him down to the bed. He was gasping for air, unable to breath as the pressure on his neck was tightening every minute.

"Then... that woman you wanted me to rescue, who was she?" Kai chuckled, "Was she your woman? Is that why you lost it when I killed her?" He laughed like a maniac.

Then, he stopped. His eyes grew big, the smile on his lips widened, as he felt like he hit a jackpot. He connected all the clues, he reached a truth.

"Ah... you had a child with that woman, right? Knowing you, you wouldn't go through such lengths for a woman if she's not the one who give birth to your child... So that means..."

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" Kai continued to laugh when his father's reaction to his conclusion proved that he was right. That woman did have a child, that was his father was aiming for — to find his real child. To find his real heir.

-

And... as if it was destiny. The child his father was so hell-bent in finding ended up in Kai's clutches so easily. He didn't even try to look for her, the universe just made it happen.

Their paths were meant to cross.

He had taken this as a sign that he really was destined to kill the real heir of Elite. He was really destined to be the heir of Elite despite being the fake child. No one else but him was destined to be the heir.

No one...

And if it isn't him, he'll do anything — kill anyone who hinders him in getting what he wants.

At first, his plan was to manipulate her. To control her, to make her his puppet or maybe more like his dog. But Lee Felix came into the picture and ruined everything.

LUNA

"Ah, fuck, I was really keeping a good job in making you a good pet. Everything would have been just perfect if it wasn't for Felix."

I made a run for it. I couldn't risk being in the same room with someone who was putting on a mask of an angel. He managed to grab my hair in time just when I was about to twist the doorknob.

He pulled me by my hair and my whole body flung to the wall, back hitting the hard wall. I hissed in pain. My scalp felt like it was ripped off. "Stay, luna. You can do that, can you?" He says, eyes pleading.

"It has always been the two of us. I thought you know better than this..." he whispered, sending shivers down my spine "my word is your law." he grabbed both of my hands and put it over the other, pinning them on the wall.

My eyes widened when I caught a glimpse of a knife, I didn't even realize he was holding one. He pierced it through my hand and he didn't stop not until the knife reached the wall.

I screamed in agony.

The pain was like hell. It was too much. It hurts too much.
