Chapter 7
Matteo's POV
Julie was a little reluctant to hire that girl but agreed knowing she was only doing it for a week. There was something about the way she quoted respecting my son. My one and only son, Cristiano de Lucca. My son who I believe had it all until he lost something most crucial. His sanity.
That too for a girl. And, not just any girl. It was Camilla Larson who I don't doubt was the only woman who could destroy anything no matter how glorious. And, this was the last thing I wanted to witness. Seeing my family, their certain values and fame destroyed. And, that too to her cheap manners.
I get my son gets excited seeing how she could bring a tsunami in his much planned-out life. But there was no way we could continue doing this insanity.
Imagine I was getting a chance to have a rich daughter-in-law and I didn't want her. I have asked my kids to only marry rich and stupid but Camilla Larson was insanity. You don't marry insane people. I know Cristiano says that he loves her but I was sure he was only excited by her.
"Isn't this evening beautiful?" Julie asked me and I held her hand and moved my thumb over the back of her hand. I looked at her. And, knew this was the kind of woman you fall in love with.
I knew the calm he hates right now he will yearn for it after a few years. He was only fucking twenty-three. Of course, he didn't know that loud and lousy mouths don't remain your choice.
And, that fucking James Larson. He didn't keep anything on Camilla's name. In the case of a future divorce, Camilla will be getting half of what Cristiano owns. And, this is when he will hate me for not intervening at this point in his life.
I thought James Larson could help. He had shown his annoyance towards Cristiano. But the moment I tried to mock him I realized he didn't have any problems with Cristiano becoming his son-in-law. He quoted he was the only guy on the globe who could deal with Camilla now.
"Where are you lost, Matteo?" Julie asked and I smiled.
"Nothing...I was wondering after how long you are staying with me. And, kids...they are home too."
"Guess...something good come out of my slip?" She smiled before leaning her head on my shoulder and we looked at the sun setting in calm. How much I wanted this beautiful moment to last.
"Mrs Lucca..." I heard Emma and don't know why I wasn't annoyed by her presence. There was something about her manners that tells me good parents and a fine upbringing. Or maybe I was judgemental after she quoted she would never do anything against Cristiano. But hey change my view?
"...I have taken the schedules of your friends and mother. Almost everyone had responded except your sister Anna but her son told me that he will convey my message. I am looking forward to her message."
"Thank you," Julie whispered and Emma nodded a little before explaining. "I will coordinate with your driver and pick them up myself as you have asked me."
"Thank you...but no one is coming before the next two days. Why don't you take some time off...get that driver and, get around Italy? It's a great place." I could tell Julie didn't want Emma to be seen by Camilla. And, I was loving the fact that Camilla already hated her. I simply hated her for how easily it was for her to laugh at my face.
I knew what I was thinking. But how it was plausible? Cristiano...will Cristiano agree? And, only a moment later I knew what I had to do.
I guess that Emma gets the hidden meaning of Julie's offer and did take the car after half an hour and left our estate. I messaged my butler to ask whoever have taken her to have an eye on her actions.
Julie made sure that I stay out and even asked me to take her to a beach. I knew she didn't want me to get annoyed by Camilla's tantrums.
"You know he will be fine. Or are you hating losing your ultimate control over the lives of our kids?" Julie asked me when we were getting back from our little beach walk and I chuckled.
"I know we have taught our son well. My kids are far emotionally stronger than us. They will be fine." I replied but I knew it makes things difficult. Their emotional strength makes them invincible and I wonder how I was supposed to get to Cristiano. When he is both cunning and strong. He could look through me. And, it wasn't difficult given he had been dealing with my cunning ways the moment he was born.
"Come on, Camilla is a fine girl too. I am sure she will do a lot better than you trust her."
Julie only sees Camilla as a troubled kid who was worthy of love because she lost her mother when she was young. But it didn't cut. I wonder how Julie would react after knowing how open-minded our son is. And, if that woman gets to become a permanent part of our family Julie will realize things about her that she doesn't want to.
I don't know why but there was something in the air. That I had to get. My son's weak point was money. But with Camilla? He loves her as much as he loves money. At least, this is what he shows. Our car got into our estate and I got a message from our butler. I was amazed seeing it was the picture of a grave with the message. "Mrs Lucca's assistant visited this grave and seemed emotional." But what came as shock was the fact that I knew who Christine was. No matter, how busy Julie gets. She still had visited this grave at least ten times in the past years. And, had asked me to accompany her. But what Emma could be to Christine?
I had to know this. The closer she is to Christine the more there was a chance that Julie will fall in love with her. And, I part knew why I wanted this.
Making sure Julie was settled in the bath with her favourite wine I excused telling her I was going to attend a call that can take time. While on the other hand, I had asked the butler to get Emma to my office. I got my sleeves up and managed the biggest smile. I knew I wanted her to like me.
"Hello, Emma...how are you doing, kid?" I knew what I did here.
She was standing and was quick to get aside to let me walk past her to get behind my table. But I was quick to get to the sofa. "I am doing fine..."
"Oh, no...you are doing great. Why are you standing? Please take a seat..." I said before telling on the intercom. "...et me a cup of hot chocolate?" And, then I looked at her and waited. "I don't want anything, Mr Lucca."
"Oh, I wasn't asking. I was waiting if it was fine with you." I smiled and I could tell she loved me when she smiled. "Thank you...was there something you wanted my help with?" Of course, she meant business.
"Oh...look...I wasn't spying but...my driver knew how often we get to visit Christine's grave. So, he kind of slipped it to me and..." And, I wonder why she got alert. There was no smile left and she gulped visibly before asking. "What...how could you know her?"
"Come on...you don't know? I mean..."
"No, I don't...I...I was eight when she died."
"Oh, she kind of helped Julie a lot with Ava. She...was her consultant doctor throughout Ava's time. And, Julie could never forget her kindness. We owe her a lot. She used to come at Ava's birthday too..." And, there was a bitter smile on her mouth. "It does sound like her..." She remained quiet and didn't look at me when she whispered lowly. "She...she was my...my...grandmother."
"Goodness! Julie looked for you. Believe me, she did. They said you were in an orphanage and...and, Christine didn't want anyone to know about the place she had planned to send you to,"
"Yea...I was brought up in an orphanage...I..."
"Oh, sweets...are you close to your foster family? Did anyone adopt you?..." A maid came in with two chocolate shakes and I smiled at the maid too. Even the maid knew I wanted this woman to have a nice view of me.
"...I mean don't get me wrong. But you come with a lot of manners. It's even more praiseworthy for kids who had been raised on their own..." I continued but she cut me off looking at the iced glass.
"No, I don't have any foster family ties...I don't think I can drink it, Mr Lucca."
"Mr Lucca? Call me Matteo..." And, I got up to have a seat beside her. She did get her eyes wide and blinked. "...hey,...I know you must be emotional after visiting Christine...I mean I didn't mean to get you annoyed but you are like Ava to Julie and me. You have no idea how happy she will be to find out she gets to see you. I can't even start to imagine how much we owe to her."
Christine was the woman who had been giving Julie the vitamin supplements, treatment and medicines for free when she was bearing Ava. She was such a nice middle age woman. I knew she was a teenage mother and it explains how Emma could be her granddaughter.
"Mr Lucca...I don't think..."
"No, call me uncle, Matteo. I think I have seen you when you were a child. I am not sure though. But I won't accept Mr Lucca from your mouth. No!..." I looked at the maid and ordered her. "...Get her a room ready in my wing. And, in three days I want you to prepare the east wing on the first floor. You will love the view, Emma. I tell you. The lake has a great sunset..."
"Mr..." And, I showed her my grim face raising my finger.
"Uncle..." Even her face told me how hard it was for her. "...I don't think it's right. I am fine in my room and...I..."
"There is no way you are going to miss our family event. Your aunt is waiting for me. I better go. Julie and I prefer our breakfast at eleven in the morning. And, you are joining us,"
"Mr Lucca...I mean...uncle? You owed to my granny. I don't deserve..." I shook my head shaking my finger.
"You want to work. You will work for me. And, you will get to learn a lot. I know..." I left and I knew how to do it already. I told Julie about who Emma is and knew I don't have to keep an eye on the girl now. Julie will be far more active in settling her.
I asked Peter to invite every famous political leader we had good ties with to attend. No matter if it was previous or current Presidents or Prime ministers. I actively sent gifts to all the famous businessmen and rich officials to apologize for the short notice and told them we will understand their absence but will owe them if they still manage to come. And, who doesn't want to get close to us? And, as if it wasn't enough I called all the dudes Cristiano hates from the U.A.E. I knew he hated that place or sheikhs for how powerful they are in their region. I even sent the letter to that rich snob club ladies my Ava and Julie swore to hate.
It was a day before the wedding when the guests started arriving and Ava barged into my room. "What is going on?" I looked at her and acted innocent. "What is going on?" She did stop for a moment to spot Jimmy Larson in my room and I asked,
"What? I thought you would be busy with your spa and..."
"Dad...you have an insane amount of guests. You have booked all the luxurious suites all over the capital. Politicians, billionaires and even your rivals. Even...the people Cristiano hates. And, why did you invite that snobby lady Pam again? Mom hates her. Granny will lose it. You didn't want this wedding to happen and now!"
"I am here to ask the same thing." Cristiano got in and I shrugged my shoulders.
"This is my son's wedding. Of course, it has to be a great event. In fact, Jimmy and I would be starting a venture together. I want the world to know we get to join hands with Mr Larson. This new venture will have ninety per cent shares for Mr Larson. Don't worry...I am starting it with my budget. Consider it a wedding gift from me, Cristiano."
I noticed there were doubts on Cristiano's face but he shook his head. "Camilla is losing it...she won't get it...and, she hasn't arranged..."
"Why my girl has to get worried? We have already decided we will cater this wedding at Mr Lucca's residence by the lake."
"This is our wedding..." Cristiano huffed.
"And, you are our heirs. This fortune comes with a price, my son. And, having a high profile wedding is something you shouldn't avoid," My son looked at me dead straight. And, this is when Jimmy helped. "I guess someone told me he can handle Camilla,"
"You have ruined it for us. We will talk about it, soon." Cristiano left and Ava started glaring at me with suspicions.
I already knew Julie was keeping that girl close and past that day I didn't have spent any minute on that girl. I knew my little Julie. She didn't even know she was helping me. So pure and innocent until it is too late. Oh...I loved her.
Ava was about to leave when I told her. "You are attending it. I am sure you don't want to come out as having a dysfunctional family in front of those snobby ladies." Ava didn't stop but I knew she had ears.
I knew Camilla wanted to look her best and didn't want anyone to disturb her. And, everyone was fine with this. But not me. Only an hour before the wedding I went to see the never-would-be, Mrs Lucca.
I knocked and heard, "Come in,"
"Oh...there is still a lot left...but hey...leave us for two minutes. I have an important document Camilla needs to sign for the marriage..."
All of them left and Camilla did have doubts on her face. "Great...I do accept my defeat. In fact, today I am way proud to say it. Welcome to the family Camilla. Even you can't start..." I sit on the sofa and continued. "...to imagine what a gem you are. Your dad once told me that reverse psychology works on you. I wanted you to get married and look my trick did work. I did want to see in my life that Camilla Larson becomes Mrs Lucca. You are too perfect, Camilla." I knew it was working. Her smirk got smaller before she said. "What did my father say? And, you are lying. You had always hated me. I have heard you..."
"Come on...or why I would invite the whole world? There are ten thousand most important people here. I didn't invite any nosy celebrities or bloggers or any press. Only the richest and most powerful standing and witnessing my son's wedding. Now...this was the kind of wedding I wanted for my kids...oh, by the way, I forgot what I was here for. Here, are the marriage papers. They want you to sign it..." I offered her the papers and she was already breathing heavily.
My phone buzzed and I left those papers on the vanity before accepting my call. And, there was no one except my assistant, Peter. "Why can't you...oh...I am sorry. Why don't I send my private jet...oh...yea, yea, they don't delay but if your flight to Michigan gets a minute of extra of this half an hour. You can ask me. Yea,...of course,..." I cut the call and looked at Camilla. "Did you..."
"You know what...my hair would need time. Why don't I send someone with these papers to you?" And, I looked at her. "Oh, take your time...it's your big day honey. These papers can wait. Also, thank you for adjusting to the venue change. I guess with such a compromise you have given a great start to your journey." And, her smile only got wider and creepier. I knew what it was telling me but I didn't seem to take any notice of it and left.
I knew she had a fight with Cristiano over the venue of the wedding. But I wasn't doing anything wrong. If their love is so pure and this girl is a mature woman. This wedding would happen. The thing was I knew she had always loved to push Cristiano to the spot and test his patience over and over again. Peter did inform me after half an hour that Camilla had boarded the flight. And, to make sure that Cristiano doesn't hear any of it I walked to him with Mr Saad and his oldest son. Only fifteen minutes later I noticed Benjie making his way to him.
I knew I did him bad. But there will be no day witnessing Camilla and Cristiano getting married. I fisted my hand when Benjie came to whisper something in Cristiano's ear and he was quick to tell us. "Excuse me...dad? There is a...friend, I want you to meet." The pause conveyed to me what it was about. "Oh, why not? Saad...I will see you around."
I know you haven't seen the personality of Cristiano...but you will love his indifference...it will be even more emotional. Matteo wasn't in love with someone...but he is...at least he is sure he is...and, craves for one woman.
