Chapter 3
Emma's POV
Yes, I did follow my dream to get to New York. But coming here I knew why I always dreamed of this place. It was because I wanted to work for him. Or nothing else made the sense. And, if anyone will say I am in love with him or fantasy him. I will punch him. I don't. I really don't.
I wanted to work for him because it wasn't only one of the best corporations to be part of. But also I will have the chance to work for someone to whom I owe big time. He simply deserved to be worked for. I started working as an office girl in the accounts department but HR here works mysteriously. I was not the only office girl given how big the accounting department was but soon they only moved me to the creative department. And, the reason was funny.
They said they did it for my punctuality, patience and paucity of any personal life. I swear I don't know how they found these three Ps about me. But I guess the realization that I was somehow working for Cristiano and was a little part of him gets the best out of me. I was still to work a lot on my efficiency but I was indeed punctual and had no problem staying late if any of the executives wanted someone to stop for extra.
They warned me about the hell the creative department was. And, I tried to be ready for it too. A part of me was greedy to have a glimpse of him. Because there was no way he ever visits accounts. In fact, the higher-up executives walked to see him if he wants to have a talk.
And, though I was working for this department. Not for a single time do I get lucky to see him. But HR was right. It was hell. The whims of the executives here were hard to meet. They were short on patience, expects others to meet unrealistic deadlines and didn't have the word manner in their dictionary. To say we were exhausted and at the limits of our resources, can't do fair for our situation. And, only a month later I was called in the HR again. They said I was the only one who stayed for a month in the creative department and didn't come with any complaints. Even though Mr Percy threw his coffee at me for how it was cold once.
Even I didn't know what other hell HR had in plan for me. And, the moment they told me I was a perfect one to assist Miss Camilla. I couldn't believe my hearing.
They warned me if I was fired by Miss Camilla Larson it will be the end of my journey with Lucca enterprise in totality. But I was getting greedy. It meant...seeing him for sure. It's not like I don't see him in the news or on billboards. But seeing him live in front of me? I think I was ready to take the chance.
I signed a few agreements. I was free to read them but I was told how mainly it meant I am not supposed to spill out about anything I learn at my job. And, I guess I could do that. I kept a copy for me but not having the time I signed their copy in the morning.
I indeed find all of the office assistance here very focused on the tasks. But I believed HR when they see me worthy of assisting the future better half of Cristiano de Lucca. Though I knew she is only a girlfriend. But somehow I knew they two were made for each other.
I waited to see Mr Benjie who was supposed to interview me but instead this changed into a video call interview at the last moment.
I sat in front of the screen and exchanged pleasantries but I could tell he was walking. Of course, interviewing me wasn't something he was so looking forward to. I knew who Benjie was. Everyone knew him. He works right under Cristiano de Lucca. He looks like his bodyguard but could work as a jinnee to do any of his stuff. He looks in his early forties and had a grim face.
"The HR department seemed to be quite impressed by you." His voice was heavy.
"I hope it is for the good..."
"Meet Diego. And, remember if Miss Larson fires you. There is nothing anyone can do for you."
"I know and,..."
"I will see you in person the moment I return." And, before I could say something he cut the call.
"Who is Diego?" I whispered looking at the screen. I shut the laptop before walking back to HR. There were a few glass doors before I witnessed Mr Harrison talking to his secretary. But the moment his eyes fell on me he exclaimed. "Hello, Emma. How did it go?"
"He asked me to see Diego," I replied pulling a professional tone.
"I knew he will trust me. Why don't you take the office car to Mr Lucca's place and meet his butler, Sebastian? A very strange man I warn you. But nothing is going to remain usual in your life if you...you know stayed in Miss Camilla's life." Was he low-key telling me that I am not cut for it? I didn't want to have care though. I was doing it all in me to cage my excitement when I managed a "Thank you,"
I couldn't help a devilish smile when I turned around. I was going to step my foot into his home. Cristiano de Lucca's home. Every effort that I put to come here was going to be paid off. In fact, it was what I never saw coming into my life. It was certainly more than I asked for.
I met a driver and after he confirmed my identity he let me get into a Mercedes Benz. I was excited and looked around the signs. And, the moment he got out of the city to the more secluded mansions I knew at any moment I will see his home. Though I do read him in the articles. I never ran a search at his place. And, now I wonder why it never crossed my mind.
His place was worth the jaw drop. It was a huge mansion that I didn't have to estimate because it told on the name board that the place was twelve acres huge. The home stood with the white brick and the elegancy it oozes tells me it was him. I couldn't help but recall he was wearing white that night too. But soon I shook the thought out and walked into the huge door before the Benz pulled to drop me.
And, though I wear snickers to keep going I was cautious enough to keep my footing strong. The marble shined like a mirror beneath my feet. Everything inside was white too with very light brown furniture. The air freshener had lavender out. And, it gave the home a nice warm feeling.
"What is your business here?" A woman in a grey humble uniform came out to ask and I smiled a little before asking. "I am here to see the butler of the home. I...I...am a new assistant for Miss. Camilla."
"Why don't you have a seat? Anything you want?..." She trailed off and I took a moment before telling her. "Water?"
"Great,"
I didn't take a seat. Instead, I walked to the end where I could spot a mirror and looked at my brown orbs behind thick-rimmed glass. I had my hair in a high bun and had tried to hide most of my face with bangs on my head.
Even if my parents were presumed dead. There were a lot of people who knew about me. And, I know I have grown up and changed features a little. I didn't want to take a chance.
"You must be..." Someone came out in an all-white uniform.
"Emma Princeton...a new hired for..."
"I know..." The maid came with the water and I accepted. "...why don't you meet Diego? He is the best fit for..." His speech got interrupted and I followed his eyes too to notice Miss Camilla walking out of the hallway at our left. After her, a guy with muscular arms in a t-shirt followed. She had huge shades on her face and I smiled a little only to jump in the next when she yelled, "Fuck! This is awful. Who thought it was a great painting?" I too looked at the painting of a woman with a half face and didn't dare move a limb. The butler walked to her and whispered, "It was Mr Cristiano..."
"Remove it, now." She ordered while her heels clicked on the floor. She didn't acknowledge my presence. Though I could tell for a moment her eyes did fell on me.
"Go after her...and, get into the passenger seat of the car she gets into. They will know who you are," He said and I looked at him lost. "But...what's...what I am supposed to help her with," I asked quickly and he was sharp in his tone now. "Figure it out...it's only luck. I assure you. The driver there is named, Diego. Trust him."
I almost ran out and jogged my way to the passenger seat the moment I get into the car. They did look at me. All three of them.
"For who we are waiting now? God?" Her voice was not the sweet one I hear in the press. The car started and saying I was nervous doesn't even cut. Nobody asked me a question and I was happy with it. The car's interior was posh. The seats were huge and the leather was soft.
The car was pulled in front of a luxurious hotel and I heard. "What's your name?" I knew the question was directed to me so I said, "Emma Princeton,"
She smirked before whispering. "I don't know what they have told you about me. But I am a very easygoing person. And, I loveeee..." She stopped and I could pick a little slur in her speech. She was a little intoxicated. "...love...what do I love?...yea...I love brunettes. This...nerdy style suits you...don't you wear...this lipstick though? No makeup...ok? Keep it professional?"
"Sure thing," I replied without a beat and wonder what that was. Maybe she was intoxicated or something. The man who was accompanying her in the back seat opened the door for her. And, I left the moment Diego got out. We accompanied her to the top floor where the elevator opened on a huge balcony party around a pool.
It was Diego's hand that came ahead to inform me it was where we stop. "It's her phone. You will pick it for her. And, be...professional." I finally take a good look at Diego. He had a good height with a sharp square jaw. Though his dimple made him less intimidating.
"Thank you,"
"Also, don't believe whatever she told you. She isn't easygoing." I looked at Diego for a moment before nodding. "Thank you, I appreciate the help."
"Who...who is this man? Her bodyguard?" I asked and heard Diego smirking.
"He is Bernie. I don't think you need to know about him...not yet...also, the less pretty you look. The more you will stay." I nodded a little before staring at him. "Do you think...HR chose me because I am ugly?"
"No,...Miss Camilla would never want anything even part ugly around her. And, you want to look pretty or employed?" I didn't answer this one. But I guess he knew the answer.
We both stared at Camilla who seemed to be laughing with a few of her girlfriends. I couldn't help but appreciate her look. She was indeed the epitome of beauty with her blonde hair and porcelain skin. But I wonder from where her complex originates. She was a rich heiress too. Why they had care what a staff member looks like? We weren't important. At least, this is what I have learned.
I was standing for an hour when her phone vibrated where it said beau with two hearts and Cristiano's picture in a towel on the screen shook me. My hand literally trembled as I kept gawking at the phone.
Was I going to talk to him?
The next chapter will be sooner.
