-Chapter 10-
"Tell me inside of the car. I'm not about to yell at you out here." My mom said as she walked to the car. She opened the car with the car keys and sat in the driver's seat. I sat in the passenger seat.
"What do you have to tell me now?" My mom said to me.
"Mom..." I began, "There's been a lot happening at school recently, and I think Oliver hates me for it... This girl named Hailey said to me that she could make you and dad treat me as someone, but it would cost my brother hating me, and I accepted the deal. The person who Oliver dated was the person supposed to distract him from studying so you guys can hate him for having bad grades. I'm super sorry, mom. I just wanted you guys to be proud at me for at least once."
My mom looked at me shocked. I looked down.
"What do you mean by me treating you badly?" My mom said concerned.
"I-I just thought your favorite was Oliver." I said trying to hold back my tears, "You guys always get mad at me for my grades and I thought it meant that you saw me as a nobody because I didn't want to be a doctor!"
"Oh, Mija, I would never think that. I love you both the same, but I just show it in different ways. You should've just talked to me about it."
"I'm sorry-"
My mom interrupted me by pulling me into a hug. I felt tears come down from my eyes.
"I will never have a favorite child. I loved you both since the day you guys were born. Now, go tell Oliver to break with her, and tell him the truth about her." My mom said.
"About that." I began, "She broke up with him since she told him the truth first, and Oliver is kind of mad at me now... he won't talk to me."
"Then go apologize to him until he forgives you. I didn't raise a quitter, did I? When we get home, go apologize to him. This isn't a yes or no question."
I smiled as I nodded my head. After, my mom drove away.
I looked out the car window. The entire drive home was silent.
After, we arrived home. I got out of the car, so did my mom.
"Wait!" My mom said, "Take off that dress now and throw it away. I don't want to see it again. Also, where did you go that you had to wear a dress."
"Oh, uhm. Will you be mad?" I said to my mom.
"I'm in a good mood right now. Why would I be mad?"
"So... I went to a bar, BUT I didn't know that we were going there; I thought we were just going to hang out."
"Go apologize your brother. Also, don't think that you're not in trouble. I'm not going to let you ruin my mood."
I smiled a bit and walked inside. My mom also walked inside too. After, I went to my room and took off my dress.
Then, it was time to follow what my mom said.
I knocked on Oliver's door. I heard footsteps approaching the door. I saw the door creep open.
Then he slammed it shut.
"Oliver, just let me talk to you please! I'm sorry for doing all of those things to you, I really mean it. I should've never talked behind your back just to take all the attention away from you! I wasn't thinking right." I said, but he didn't respond. "I don't care if you won't forgive me or anything, but just please listen to me and say something back!"
He still didn't respond.
"OLIVER, please!" I said as I felt tears come down from my eyes, "I don't want to lose you, you mean a lot to me. I should've never said that because of everything you have down for me, Oliver. I'm grateful for a brother like you even though I don't deserve it."
I heard the door open.
"You idiot. You're seriously crying for me?" Oliver said as he smiled a little bit, "Yeah, you really don't deserve me."
I looked at him surprised. Are we really going to start arguing again.
Oliver came close up to me and hugged me.
"But it doesn't mean you don't need me. You should be more than grateful for a brother like me." Oliver said as he laughed, "I can't stay mad at you forever, can I?"
I smiled, "Haha, you're still trying to be funny, aren't you?"
"Nope. I don't need to try."
We both laughed. It was great to have him back.
"What about Hailey?" Oliver asked.
"She won't know what's coming for her tomorrow." I said back.
***
It was the next day. I got up and got ready for school as usual. This time, I felt more motivated to go to school. This morning when I got dressed, I didn't wear what I usually wore, I finally wore something decent this time. I wore sweatpants with a long-sleeved shirt, this time, no revealing.
I did my usual morning routine then waited outside for the bus. This time, we sat together. I didn't look at anyone, I just kept my head straight once again.
When we arrived at school, me and Oliver walked to our classroom together. Although we did get stares, we just ignored them. At least everyone knows that were close to each other again.
I smiled at that thought.
As I walked into the classroom, I saw Hailey look at me. I looked away, so I didn't see if she made any facial expressions. After, I went to my seat.
"What happened? Did you make another lie to be close to your brother again?" Hailey said to me.
"No, why would I do that? Just so you know, there's nothing you can do now. Not everyone in this school is scared of you; you don't even know how to ruin people's lives correctly. Siblings argue and they become friends again, did you ever think of that? You're just powerless now, Hailey. The only life that is going to get ruined is yours." I said back to Hailey.
"So, you're going to have attitude on me now? I was just trying to help-"
"By ruining my life? Yeah, didn't work." I said as I interrupted Hailey.
"You know what," Hailey began, "There's a reason for everything like there was a reason why I did that to you."
"Here comes another excuse... make it quick."
"You think I will tell you, hah. Leave me alone." Hailey said as she walked away.
Did I just do that? I made Hailey feel offended. I smiled, but her friends looked at me.
"Why would you even say that? She can ruin your life again if she wants to." One of her friends said. All of her other friends nodded their heads in agreement.
"How can she possibly do that? Record another video of me saying something bad about Oliver? Yeah, that's not going to happen." I responded.
They all began whispering to each other, then looked at me.
"The reason why she did this is because of her sister." Her friend stated, "Something... happened to her, and ever since then, she never liked seeing siblings with a good relationship, so she tried to ruin them."
I looked confused for a second, "What do you mean by something happening to her sister?"
"Hailey has a sister named Sophie, and you can say their relationship wasn't the best... They always argued a lot and never got along. Sophie is Hailey's older sister by the way. One day when they were arguing, Sophie got so annoyed by her, so she left the house. Hailey was wondering if she was coming back soon, but all she heard was her parents crying. She later asked them what happened, and her parents said that Sophie was in a car crash. They all quickly rushed to the hospital and when they arrived, the doctor told them that she was in a coma, and about 3 weeks later, she died. Hailey never acted the same since then, but we can't wrong her, right? She still hasn't recovered from it. I'm sorry for the way she treated you, but there was a reason."
I didn't say anything. I guess I didn't know much about Hailey. I only knew the things I wanted to know about her.
Manipulator.
Liar.
Rude.
"Oh, I'm sorry about what happened to Hailey." I said to them, "I'll be right back." I got out of my chair and walked out of the classroom. Where could Hailey be? I thought to myself. Then, I thought of one place she could've gone to. The bathroom.
I walked to the bathroom. I went inside of there, and I didn't see Hailey.
"Hailey?" I said, "Are you in here?"
"Just go away!" I heard Hailey say. It sounded as if she was crying.
"Look," I began, "I'm not here to argue. I just want to talk to you."
I heard the stall door open. Hailey came out of it.
"What do you want?" Hailey said. Her eyes were baggy and red.
"I'm sorry. I know you didn't mean that... I just didn't know." I said to her.
"Know what?" Hailey said back.
"Of what happened to your sister. I know it might be hard for you, but sometimes you have to let people go. The past won't lead you to the future."
"Let her go? How am I supposed to let my sister go, do you know what you're saying right now?!"
"She wouldn't want to know that you're dwelling on the past and trying to ruin people's lives, right?"
"You don't understand! I never got to say sorry to her."
"Then what are you waiting for. Show her that you're a better person now, better than you were in the past. I know you can do it." I said as I smiled.
Hailey looked at me with tears in her eyes. She came up to me and hugged me. I hugged her back. It was silent, all I could hear was Hailey crying while hugging me.
I learned a lot from coming to this school. I even learned a life lesson too. Maybe this school isn't bad after all.
It just needs a little change to it, and I think I made that change.
My mom finally cares for me, and Oliver is finally not mad at me. I never knew I could also change Hailey too. My biggest mistake became my life solution.
This is a real welcome to Hilltop high school.
