Failure Mode [Pt.3]

The next day, I went to Honey Lemon's lab and asked her about helping me with Globby's situation. I set up my laptop and she gets a beaker full of chemicals close to Globby's body.

“The problem is at its source. So from what I gathered that night I saw Globby morph with the chemicals from your Chempurse. He put on, what Krei said, was a neurotransmitter band. It linked with the all kinds of chemicals to make Globby globby.”

Here I go, rambling again. I hook up a device which causes the chemical in the beaker to move when I press certain buttons.

“Oh! I see now.” Honey pushes up her glasses. “Wow.”

I stop when someone starts whistling a happy tune and it was Hiro. He's….in a happy mood. I type on my laptop again to get it ready.

“Hey! Well, someone's in a good mood.” Wasabi says in a good mood too and Hiro stop by Honey's Lab.

“Well yeah. We crushed our last mission after returning the stolen painting and we had Globby so scared, he went himself.”

“Not exactly.” I say and turn my laptop screen to face the gang as they gather around.

“(Y/n) found out that the volatile chemicals that made Globby globby combined with the neurotransmitter.” Honey pours in one last solution to the chemical and I turned on the device.

“Right.” Gogo said.

The chemicals start to move inside the big beaker, “Globby had most likely learned how his thoughts can control his….” I try to find a word for it. I hate when that happens.

Honey shrugs and doesn't seem to know herself, “Globbiness?”

Wasabi looks worried, “So he can turn to anything. That villain is on his way to being a super.”

Hiro speaks up with a smile like it wasn't dangerous, “I don't care if he's a solid, liquid, or gas. We can take him.”

“OH! I hope not gas!”

We all look at Wasabi and shake our heads. I hope not too.

“Where's Fred?” Hiro finally noticed the comic enthusiast is gone.

Gogo places a hand in her hip, “He's at the museum in case Globby strikes again.”

I smile and snicker, “And showing off what he calls A Masterpiece. In Fred’s words, he said It MOVES people.”

Hiro hums and grins, “Anyway, it's great to feel like I'm good at something.” He puts a few things in a plastic bin. “I really needed that.”

Why does he sound not so sure? Oh wait. That project is still bothering. I disconnect the device from my laptop and close the screen.

“So you're finally ready to step up and crush that quake proofing demo.” Gogo holds up a fist with a smirk.

“Totally ready. I just don't have a plan of any sorts, so uh….”

I frown at Hiro. Did he really just give up? “Hold on there, Genius. Don't you dare stop working on this project. It's not going to feel any better than you are now.”

“(Y/n)’s right, Hiro. Of course you're not just gonna blow it off.” Wasabi tries to help.

Oh man, that sounded like Wasabi gave him a suggestion without knowing it.

Hiro definitely took it as a suggestion. “I hadn't considered that, but-”

“No, no, no, no. Forget I said anything!” Wasabi panics and goes up to Hiro, “Stop looking like you're considering it.”

Honey runs over to stop Hiro from pushing a cart of things to take to his lab. “Hiro wait. You can't just quit.”

“Yeah. Do you want to be known as a genius quitter?” Gogo pushes on.

I don't think this is helping. If I were Hiro, I would be slightly hurt. I don't think the others will get through to him now if he keeps avoiding their words. Maybe…..I bite my lip. Maybe mentioning Tadashi would get something through his head.

“No, but at least a genius quitter is probably the best kind of quitter, right?”

“Maybe I should give up.”

I take a deep breath when Tadashi's words repeat itself in my head. “Hiro, I get it.” I go to him, “You think of you give up then it won't count as failing, but actually...it's worse.” I glance at Baymax, “Tadashi failed 83 times before Baymax functioned properly.”

The peeved expression kinda made me want to take it back, especially at what he said next. “Maybe I'm not as smart as my brother!” Hiro pushes the cart past me and quickly leaves to his lab.

Gosh. The guilt is so overwhelming right now. I didn't mean to make him so upset.

Come on, you can do this. You can fix this…...Hopefully. I quickly head to Hiro’s lab, leaving the others with Baymax and whatever he was painting. Slowly, I open the lab door and peak in to see Hiro messing around on his laptop.

“Hiro?”

Hiro sighs heavily, “I don't want to talk about it.”

My feet stop walking in the middle of the room, but I push onward, just a foot away from him. “I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you so upset and I know it's never my place to say anything about your brother, since I haven't known you and the others for long. I care about you, Hiro. Just as much as I have for Tadashi.” I brush a strand of my hair back nervously, “Your brother went through the same problem you're having and I would always hate to see him so…...beyond discourage. It wasn't like him and right now, I hate to see you go through it too.”

Again, Hiro was silent like he was last night and he stopped messing with his laptop.

I stick my hands in my hoodie pockets and glance around the lab that used to be Tadashi's with a heavy feeling in my chest. “You were right about one thing. You are not as smart as your brother. You're a genius! Smarter than me, smarter than Tadashi.”

What is with my rambling today?

“What I'm trying to say is that you have a part of your brother with you, so prove to him you're not a quitter.” There was nothing else more to say and I couldn't really do anything if Hiro wasn't going to listen, though maybe the last one to help is Baymax. “I'll see you later, Hiro.”

My eyes shift to the floor outside of the lab and I lean on the glass.

“Tadashi Hamada. Test #58 Robotics Project.”

---------------

“Hello. I am Baymax, your personal healthcare companion--”

My hand pulls down the doorknob and I walk in, witnessing Tadashi's project on fire! Oh no. I stop with the door closing against my back.

“NO!” Tadashi rushes over to a fire extinguisher and immediately puts out the fire. He frowns and tosses the extinguisher to the side, “Why?” He growls and paces back and forth with his hand go his head, looking like he wants to hit something. “Why do I put myself through this 58 TIMES?”

This is scaring me. I have never seen Tadashi act like this before. I honestly did not want to move.

Tadashi stops and sighs heavily with discouragement. He runs his neck stressfully, “Maybe this will never work….” I see him look down sadly, “...Maybe I should give up.”

What? I don't know why that hurts me. Maybe because he might leave and Tadashi is my only best friend. I subconsciously play with my hoodie sleeves, catching Tadashi's attention and he looks surprised.

“(Y/n)...” He says softly, “...how long were you standing there?” His eyes shift to Baymax and gulps a little, “You're not still recording, are you?”

There's a spark and Tadashi runs a hand down his face.

-----------

Hiro frowns at the footage Baymax played. The healthcare robot had walked in when you had left to go home and he began following what you had told him. ‘To help, Hiro.’

“I've never saw him like that…..and I never knew (Y/n) was there at that time either.”

Wasabi comes in, “Fred just called. They decided to put the painting in the storage.”

“Wise move.” Hiro smiles.

Gogo shoves her way beside Wasabi in the doorway, “That means it's in a truck crossing the city.”

“Not so wise move.”

Hiro and his friends suit up and head out to stop Globby. By the time they caught up, Globby had taken the painting of City Rising from the truck, but this wasn't their best mission so far with Globby because the subpar villain had new abilities.

Honey Lemon’s Chempurse malfunctioned with Globby's own goo.

Gogo slipped on a path of pink crystals that Globby had formed and she crashed onto it.

Globby blocked Fred's fire with a shield he formed and covered Fred's mouth with green sticky substance, then glued the monster superhero to the ground.

Wasabi went to help cut Fred out, only to get trapped in pink flexible foam with Fred.

Baymax shot his rocket fist and Globby caught it and maneuvered it to crash near the Big Hero 6 team.

Finally, Hiro had fallen off Baymax as a splat of goo covers the robot's face. The young genius groans and sits up with Globby laughing evilly.

“If at first you don't succeed. Learn to turn yourself into chocolate.” Globby turns his hand into a big chocolate bar and giving it to Hiro. “Enjoy! Catch you later! Gotta bounce!” He forms himself into a spring and bounces away with the painting.

Hiro runs over to Honey to help her up and she frowns. “Oh no. That was awful.”

“I know. Gotta bounce? I mean it fits, but come on. Dig deeper.” Fred wasn't the same page as the chemist.

“We've failed and worse? We've failed Lenore Shimamoto. Oh, (Y/n) might be upset too!” Honey says sadly.

“I don't know, Honey Lemon. It makes us sound like losers.” Fred finally stands up with the foam that blew away from the rocket fist blowing up.

Wasabi and Gogo were now stuck under a bridge and he hung upside down, “Well, we did lose.”

Hiro frowns in disbelief at everyone's discouraging state, “Come on, guys. It's not the end of the world. Look at Globby. He failed again and again, but he figured it out…….eventually.” He chuckles, “It's okay to get discouraged, but you have to pick yourself up and try again.”

“That's a great speech, Hiro. But can you get me down. I'm about to pass out.” Wasabi says in a daze.

It didn't take long for the group to head home.

Hiro and Baymax managed to get back right when his aunt finished making dinner. Soon Hiro goes upstairs and stares at all the crumbled papers on his desk, reminding him the day he tried to come up an invention that would get him into SFIT. The young Hamada sighs and taps his pencil.

“I still don't have an idea for my semantic project.” Hiro eyes his phone and debates whether to ask you for help. He hold the device in his hand as the screen turns on and his finger hovers over your name in the contacts.

“You're just overreacting.”

Hiro’s eyes widen at your voice, nearly panicking, but notices Baymax playing another video.

-------------

“I'm serious. Be careful. Are you sure this is the problem?” Tadashi worried.

I had taken the access port from his project to fix tiny problems in the reader and now the chip is inside, reading all the information it has on it. “The access port links to all the functions in your project, so there is something wrong inside which is sending to much information throughout the exoskeleton. You know, it's like your body getting shock with electricity.”

I smile warmly at Tadashi and tiptoe to boop his head, “If something happens, always deal with the problem at its source.”

Tadashi playfully rolls his eyes and bumps me with his hip.

We wait for something to happen.

The marshmallow looking robot blinks, “Hello-zzt!!!” An arm swings and knocks Tadashi onto the swivel chair, causing him to slide across the room.

“Oh no- WAH-MPH!!!” My face is being squished against the balloon like tummy of the robot as it squeezes me in a deadly hug. “ASHI! TOO TIGHT!” I couldn't even move to take out the chip.

“(Y/N)! Hold on!” I see Tadashi's hand slap open the access port and takes out the chip.

------------

“Deal with the problem at its source…” Hiro says in thought. Suddenly an idea hits him, “EXACTLY! I know what to do!” A rush of excitement caused Hiro to start writing and scribbling something on new sheets of paper.

------------

The sound of my phone receiving a text woke me up just as I was about to fall asleep. Ugh. Who would text me at this moment of peace?

Hiro, apparently. Of course.

“Globby got away with the painting. He kept trying again and again ending in fail, but now he won this time.”

Okay, that's a bummer. I hope they don't feel bad about another failed mission. My thumbs went to reply until another message came in from Hiro.

“I know this week hasn't been great, but failure worked for Globby, so why not for me.”

I feel a small smile appear on my face and I text back. “I'm glad you finally realized your problem, Genius who is not a quitter.”

“Yeah and I'm using it to build my project. Goodnight, (Y/n). See you tomorrow.”

What does he mean by that? I shrug and yawn, going back to sleep after texting back. “Night. See you tomorrow, Hiro.”

----------

The next day after my first morning class, I make my way to Hiro’s lab and go in to see the other already there too. Wasabi and Gogo had their textbook from their previous class and Honey was on her laptop.

Hiro was working on another model and fixing something inside of it.

“Hey. Soooo, what's your idea for the project?” I lean on the table near him.

He smirks and stands up to tap my forehead. “You will have to wait and see during my presentation, my marvelous (Y/n).”

M-Marvelous. He called me marvelous. I clear my throat and glance away slightly, “Alright. I can't wait to see what your big brain has come up with.” I grin and flick his head.

Hiro playfully rolls his eyes.

Fred finally enters with a giant rectangular cardboard...check? “Hey (Y/n), Honey Lemon! My art thing, ‘Caution: Water Hazard’, just stole FOR A MILLION DOLLARS.” He says in excitement and holds up the check.

Oh wow! “Seriously?! I didn't think that would be sold.” I laugh. “I guess the art must be in the eye of the beholder.”

“Fred's art invoked a lot of emotions today. It might be more accurate to say: Art is in the Heart of the Beholder.”

Whoa. Did Baymax just- wow. I smile warmly, “Aw! Baymax that was really beautiful.”

Honey smiles softly too, “You really learned about art, Baymax.”

I nod and hug him, “Yeah, that was very poetic.”

Baymax tilts his head, “What is poetry?”

Me and Honey glance at each other then smile sheepishly. “Hmmm...maybe another time.” We said.

“What are you going to do with the money Fred?” Honey asked.

Fred spins the check around in his hands, “I'm giving it to the museum. I don't need it and they could use a new fountain.” He chuckles, “Plus, they just lost a priceless painting.”

Fred may be from the rich side, but he turned out to be a very good person and so generous. That's one reason why I love all of Tadashi's friends...well Hiro's friends.

Hiro finally finished his model and we make our way to Granville’s class. This time Hiro went first. Aaand Karmi was waiting with her phone recording. I shake my head and wait to see Hiro's idea in motion.

Professor Granville turned on the richter scale and it began shaking Hiro's model building.

I bite my lip when it seems like it'll topple over and I nearly growl at Karmi's smug expression, but….

Hiro is smirking confidently?

Suddenly, two openings popped up from the sides of his model and two devices sit on the surface of the shaking table with the ends sending out some kind of pulse.

Karmi's face falls into confusion. “What?”

Hiro continues to stay confident and glances at her, “My building has sensors to measure the seismic forces, then it sends out the exact sonic pulse needed to counteract them.”

My eyes widen as the scales numbers quickly go down to 0 instead of up. Okay, I'll admit. Hiro’s idea is so much better than mine. Wait….now I knew what he meant last night. I seriously can't help, but grin happily.

“So your solution is cheating.” Karmi accuses.

“No, it's not cheating.” I defend.

Hiro nods and he turns to smile warmly at me like a silent thank you, “My design withstood the shaking by dealing with the problem at its source.”

My cheeks feel a little warm and I couldn't help, but smile back.

Granville has a proud expression on her face, “Not only will this structure save itself, but it would also save the other buildings around it. This is an EXCELLENT solution.”

“Ugh!” Karmi is in disbelief and annoyed.

Oh this is so great! I hand Hiro my phone which had the camera ready and he grins mischievously, taking a picture of her expression.

“And scene.” Hiro and I high five each other.

I am so proud of him and I bet Tadashi is too.

<<[BONUS SCENE]>>>

Globby reaches an old run down building and makes his way through the boarded up door. He huffs when his globbiness sticks to the doorway and he groans after seeing his glob sticking to the painting. After wiping it and making it worse, a voice with echoes in the room.

“Well?” A man sitting in the dark stands up and leans on the table. “Did you bring it?”

Globby began feel anxious, “Oh! Uh, ah yeah!” He grins nervously and holds up the painting. “Here it is.”

The man grins and takes the painting, “You've succeeded.”

The pink villain taps his fingers subconsciously, “Sorry about, you know, the globs.”

A picture of glob rests on the frame of the painting as the man raises a brow, “Fascinating.” He puts the painting down and grabs Globby's arm before ripping off a chunk of glob with a electric device.

“Ow! Dude.” Globby pulls away.

The man hums while examining the glob inside a beaker, “Further study might unlock even more potential.”

“Potential, huh?” Globby says proudly with a happy smile until he frowns, “I told Mom she was wrong about me.” Again he grins cheerfully and talks to himself about you, “That girl was right about me!”

“Lenore Shimamoto the Artist is of no use to me.” The man raises the painting above his head and slams it down on the edge of the table, breaking the frame as pieces fly everywhere.

Globby covers himself. “Eh.”

“However, Lenore Shimamoto the SCIENTIST!” He grins yet again peels back the painting by the edge, “Is of great interest. Like with so many things in life, you have to look below the surface to find real value....” He smirks at what was below the painting, “...as one brilliant high schooler's mind once said in her graduation project.”

The paper is pulled out and rolled up in the man's hands, “Without her discoveries of Shimamoto’s secrets, then I would have never found the forgotten and undiscovered secret project of Lenore Shimamoto.”
