Cute or Not
The back two rows were talking as Tino finally noticed the sleeping child. Berwald followed Tino's eyes and found himself actually seeing the small child so safely tucked in. Something jogged a repressed memory of a five-year-old with a baby strapped into a cradleboard on his back so very long ago. It was probably the dream catcher that Matthew had hung above the chair that jogged the partial memory. The drive to their home took two hours and forty-five minutes. Alfred woke up an hour into the drive and Matthew was constantly checking the mirror to keep an eye on his brother. Tino noticed how the child would look at him often, shy in a cute way. He whispered to the child, receiving a bright smile and a faceful of neon-colored stuffed carrot.
"Mr. Car!" Alfred almost squealed out, excited to show off his new friend. He showed it to Berwald next, not intimidated by the Swede. Berwald nodded in approval of the name, a small smile on his face. Alfred beamed up at him, trust shinning in the bluest eyes he had ever seen.
"Mr. Car is very friendly." Tino spoke softly, feeling someone glare at him. The little one beamed, trying to tell them all about the adventures he had with Mr. Car. At one point, Alfred managed to hold one of Berwald's fingers and one of Tino's. They both were instantly wrapped around his pinky without knowing.
Matthew smiled, proud of Alfred and how Alfred wasn't afraid of their parents. As long as they didn't ask who found them first, Matthew wasn't going to bring it up. He didn't know why they abandoned Alfred and himself, not wanting to feel that pain or explain to Alfred why they abandoned them. He almost snorted when he saw the glare Liam leveled at the former vikings.
"What are you doing?" Matthew couldn't help but ask.
"Trying to convey that Alfred is protected and no one can hurt him." Liam stated, starting to smile from the cuteness of the scene. Matthew snorted, nodding slowly.
"Or you could say it without making them uncomfortable. Rules of hospitality and all that it may be." Matthew stated slowly, trying not to laugh. Liam did stop glaring but they both kept an eye on the two Vikings directly behind them.
Alfred was soaking up the attention, excited to have someone to play with. Tino and Berwald were just happy to see such a young and healthy personification being cared for correctly. Before America was awake, Emil fell asleep, his head pillowed on Matthias' shoulder and kinda wedged between the Danish man and the Norwegian man, Lucas. All three were napping.
"Vroom!" Alfred was excited. He loved to go fast in a car. He didn't like toys that were hard, preferring to use soft toys and toys that couldn't hurt him. Tino smiled, seeing how relaxed Berwald was. The child had no fear of either of them. Berwald noticed a dropped stuffed animal, hidden just under Matthew's chair. He scooped up the stuffie, smiling at the happy squeal of joy the child made.
"Libby!" Alfred was so excited to see his most favoriteses of stuffed animals. It was a bald eagle, made with care.
Berwald started to move the stuffed animal towards the excited toddler. Alfred beamed at the Swede, starting to play with the stuffie the big softie was moving around. Tino joined for a few minutes, before just observing the young toddler and the giant Swede as they played for a good fifteen minutes.
Tino watched, smiling a little forlorn as a very similar face looked at him with so much joy just like the ghosts of the lost Vinland brothers. It reminded him of the two children that had vanished in the middle of the night so long ago. He was distracted as a small hand patted his arm. The stars that shown back at him held so much understanding and, strangely enough, love.
"No sad no more Mor." Alfred stated as seriously as a small child could. Tino only nodded sagely.
"I will be as happy as possible, okay dove?" Tino inquired. Alfred nodded back, yawning and rubbing at his eyes, trying to stay awake.
It was an active decision from the two Vikings to move over the name Alfred used, having noticed the way Andrés, Matthew, and Liam had stiffened at the word. Berwald tucked the soft eagle in next to the very small child as Tino started to tell a story very softly. Alfred was asleep before he had gotten through the first half, hand curled around Berwald's finger. Tino almost took a picture before changing his mind.
Matthew sighed in relief as Alfred fell back asleep. Only an hour to go before they'd be home and Alfred could run around and play in the family room. It was almost too cute at times, leaving Matthew conflicted about how he should feel about the entire situation. He knew, though, that he would always be there for his little brother. The rest of the car ride was silent until they pulled up to the house/manor.
Carlos texted Andrés that he had made it onto the plane after Andrés opted to stay with Matthew and help with Alfred for a few days. Was he being a protective older brother? Absolutely! Did he care? No. Little Alfred deserved the best life could bring. So he helped unload the van, letting Matthew deal with the sleeping toddler.
