Who he thinks he is: Carter is aware that he is Merlin. Ever since he was a kid, he's had visions of things that are gonna happen before they happen. He had multiple visions of his past life, things that happened, and things that happen in Storybrooke. Shortly before the start of the book, he had a vision of a group of people from the age of 18 to 30 being the reincarnations of the Heroes of Albion. He sent the notes to each of them to go to Storybrooke.
