DIRECT AND INDIRECT CARE - Pham Viet Long - 48
Bi Bi often spends time playing with Grandpa. Occasionally, Grandma calls her to visit, but Bi Bi hesitates. Grandpa inquired:
"Why does Bi Bi play with me so often?"
Bi Bi replied, "Because you take care of me in many ways..."
Grandpa asked, "How do I take care of you?"
Bi Bi explained, "You tell stories, share food, and even tuck me in with a blanket..."
Grandpa then questioned, "And what about Grandma?"
Bi Bi tilted her head, unsure how to respond. Grandpa continued:"Grandma also cares for me a lot, perhaps even more than I do. But she provides indirect care."
Seeing Bi Bi's eyes widen in surprise, Grandpa probed further:"What do you eat every day?"
"Do you want porridge?"
"Who cooks for you?"
Bi Bi answered, "Ma'am. Sometimes she asks about my breakfast preferences and buys accordingly."
Grandpa nodded, "Exactly. I go to the market, select food for both of us, wash the vegetables, grind the meat, and cook for the grandchildren."
Prompted by Grandpa, Bi Bi recalled:"She also bought banh khuc for me.
"Grandpa affirmed, "Yes. One day, the Banh Khuc seller arrived late, and your grandmother patiently waited at the market to buy the cake and bring it home for you."
"Remember when it rained that day? Did you get wet?"
Bi Bi smiled, "Yes, I remember. So, does that mean Grandma also takes care of me?"
Grandpa replied, "Indeed.
That's indirect care."Bi Bi pondered, "What about direct care?"
Grandpa explained, "Direct care is like what I do for you—telling stories, feeding you, and tucking you in."
Bi Bi's eyes sparkled as she remembered something else:"One day, when Grandpa was away, Grandma bathed me and fed me. That's direct care too, right?"
As Bi Bi finished speaking, Grandma returned from the market. Without waiting for a reminder, Bi Bi rushed to the door:"Hello, Grandma!" She extended her tiny hands, eager to carry the bag of vegetables for her!
