35. Missing Bride
It's the wedding day of the two Abba Sulayman daughters with the two Muhammad sons. The two houses are bustling with activities as the daurin aure is in half an hour.
"Fatima, the camera man is here, should we give him food?" Amal rolls her eyes on behalf of Fatima.
"Aren't you the wedding planner? Don't frustrate me! You can leave him starving if you will." Fatima says zipping her gown. She got the same type of gown Halima wore on her wedding day, just with more puffy sleeves. And instead of the front of the gown to be plane, it's designed with stones.
And instead of the blue lace, Fatima's own is a black one with gold patterns. Amal is wearing the exact same gown.
"Adda Nana I'm coming, my jewelry is in Ammi's room." Amal says and walks out of the room.
She feels a presence in the room.
"Amal please come and help me tie this lafayya of a thing. I can't bend, to adjust the under." Fatima huffs and just as she turns, she sees Azanraba and the next thing she knows is she's in a place she knows but doesn't recognize.
"Where am I?" Fatima asks no one in particular.
"Your new home." Azanraba answers before leaving. He looks at his mother and smiles.
"Start getting ready, your only son is getting married." He says and leaves.
Amal comes back into the room and starts looking for Fatima. She doesn't see her so she concludes she went out or she's somewhere. Fatima isn't a small girl, she knows what to do and what not to do.
Her phone pings after ten minutes.
Congratulations baby, you're now mine and me, yours. I love you.
Amal smiles with tears in her eyes. She's now a married woman. A knock whisks her attention from her phone and she yells a come in.
"Where's Fatima? The knot has been tied and Aqsam didn't even agree to go to the mosque so he's already outside waiting for her." Amal shrugs.
"Call her then." Amal uses her henna stained hand to search for Fatima's contact. She taps call icon and places the phone on her ear. As it connects, she hears Fatima's phone ringing in the room. Flabbergasted, she brings the phone down from her ear.
"But Fatima never leaves her phone. It's always with her." Innayo says surprised.
"Maybe she's somewhere in the house. Let me call Afnan so she can check around." Amal calls Afnan and the latter starts going round the house.
"Amal Hamza is here." Amal looks at Innayo. The latter urges her to go ahead with a nod.
Aqsam has been anticipating his wife's presence. She had said she'd make him wait for her for long on their wedding day but it has been almost thirty minutes and he's getting a little worried.
"Amal where's Fatima?" Aqsam just can't hold it in anymore. Series of awws and oohs fly in the air together with the statement.
Without thinking twice Amal says, "We can't find her, we've been looking for her for almost an hour now." gasps are heard and murmurs follow.
"But I thought I saw her in the room?" Halima says. She has been sitting downstairs for a while. Hidaya has recieved her first shot of vaccine and she has been crying ever since. She just managed to get her to sleep.
"She was there, but now I don't know where she is. Nobody does." Aqsam feels his heart dropping to his stomach. Was she kidnapped? Did she decide to get revenge for what he did and then leave? But she wouldn't leave him like this would she? Numerous thoughts run through his mind.
"Have you called her phone?" Hamza asks seeing as his brother is frozen with shock.
"Yes, and it's in the room." Hamza furrows his brows.
"But that's so unlike Fatima, she never leaves her phone, ever." Hamza says. Everyone that knows Fatima knows that her phone is like her tail. She never goes anywhere without it, even the bathroom. She said it gives her a sense of security knowing she can just ring someone up when something goes wrong.
"Hamza, follow me." Aqsam says. He walks out leaving Hamza to follow him. He asks the gateman whether he saw Fatima going out and they get a negative answer. Hamza decides to call his father and let him know what's going on while Aqsam brings the car around, they need to see the commissioner of police.
"You think you can get married to her while I'm still alive, never? She's mine and all mine." Azanraba says immediately he appears and all the women there start screaming and running inside.
"You think by taking her you've gotten her, she doesn't love you. She sees you as the one that ruined her life. Try it, ask her, she'll tell you everything." Aqsam says calmly. Hamza is shaking with fear so much that he's about to pass out. It's surprising that he's still standing.
"That's what you think. Let her say it herself. Where's she? Oops, I took her. To her new home. And she's never coming back." Azanraba says and disappears. Hamza's knees finally give out and he finally falls to the ground with a large thud. He has seen what he's not supposed to see.
Aqsam manages to get him inside the house. By then, the news about the disappearing man has spread all over the house.
"The Jinn that possessed her before took her. He wants to marry her." Aqsam says and gasps are heard.
Water is sprinkled on Hamza and he wakes up shivering. Amal assists him up and takes him to her room.
"What happened to Hamza?" Innayo asks.
"It's the shock from seeing a Jinn. It's normal." Aqsam shrugs.
"So what do we do now?" Afnan asks the question on everyone's mind.
"We wait for a miracle." Aqsam says. He's shocked that he's not groveling on the floor. He asks for a prayer mat and he starts praying.
Slowly, all the guests dissipate. Leaving only close family members that are staying at the house for the time being and the house aids hired for the wedding.
Fatima has been shedding tears nonstop since Maa told her that she is getting married to Azanraba in an hour. She doesn't want to have anything to do with him. He's not a human for God's sake! She already has a husband waiting for her back at home and she's here in the middle of nowhere being forced to marry a Jinn.
"Can you stop crying? You're ruining the makeup. Your eyes are already red and puffy and you're making it extremely hard for me to cover them up." Rabani says rolling her eyes.
She has given up on ever thinking Azanraba would ever be hers. He's too smitten by this fair, slim beautiful young Fulani girl and there's nothing she or her mother can do to change it.
Now she's helping him get Fatima ready for their marriage which is going to be conducted in less than an hour. She can't lie to herself by saying she's not hurt but what can she do? He doesn't love her and he has made sure to clarify that time without number.
She just needs this closure, to confirm to herself that Azanraba has never, can never and will never be hers.
"Don't you feel remorse? If it was you being forced to marry a human, when you're actually in love with a jinn, how would you feel?" Fatima holds Rabani's hands. The bangles she was forced to wear clanking in the process.
"Please, take pity on my poor soul, I'm already married, and I love the man I married. Please, you're a female like me, understand my situation." Rabani yanks her hand away from Fatima's.
"Look, if it were up to me, I wouldn't mind taking you back to wherever the hell you came from and taking your place thereby getting married to Azanraba because I don't like you one bit, and I love Azanraba, more than you love your so called husband. But if I should try it, Azanraba would make sure I don't live to witness a whole minute. So shut the hell up or I make you!" Fatima's heart constricts in pain. What is her family going through? Her Ammi, her Abba, Amal, Afnan, how are they doing? Do they even know about this? Her husband, Aqsam, how is he coping? What conclusions has he come to? She's sure he most probably doesn't know what happened, where she is and all.
More heart wrenching sobs gallop from her mouth making Rabani to smack her straight across the face.
"I said shut the hell up!" Fatima's cries get louder and Rabani drops everything in her hands shaking her head.
"I can't do this anymore. Maa should come and dress her daughter in law." The way she spat the daughter inlaw made it sound like a taboo. She walks out of the room and soon enough, an older woman with a keen resemblance to Azanraba comes in.
"I've always heard that humans aren't as beautiful as we are though they consider us ugly but you my dear, are the most beautiful human I've come across." Fatima starts crying all over. She doesn't even know why she's crying again.
"Hush hush. Why are you crying? Don't you want to get married to my son? I thought you love him." Fatima starts shaking her head sporadically.
"Wallahil Azeem I don't love him. He's the reason why all male species hate me. And now that I'm finally married, after taking years in finding love again, I finally found my soulmate and got married to him, but now, he's hell bent on seeing that he ruins my life." Fatima sniffs.
"But maybe I don't deserve love, maybe all the finding love again was for nothing. Maybe I was never destined to find happiness or love." Tears gather in Maa's eyes. She feels pity for the poor girl, but she knows that if she dares try ruining Azanraba's hard work, she'll be in deep shit. She's scared of her own son's anger and it seems like Fatima is the trigger to that anger.
"I wish i could help. I really wish I could. But only you can make Azanraba understand that you're not meant for each other. Only you can make him see that. At this stage of his life, he listens to nobody. But maybe, just maybe the love he has for you will allow him grant you a listening ear." Fatima nods, understanding what she's driving at.
Maa nods as she sees the understanding drench Fatima slowly. The young beautiful girl looks smart and it's obvious she's smart.
"Play your cards well. Let me get him for you." Maa kisses Fatima's forehead and even though it felt wierd, she felt a little bit at ease. It was is if she said 'you're safe' with that one kiss. Maa walks out and soon enough Azanraba walks in looking all inch sumptuous in his Indian-like gown and cap.
"Muhammad, please let me go. I'm Barren, you won't get children. I have alot of problems and I'm already married. And most importantly, I'm a human and you, a Jinn. We're not compatible and I don't love you. Please let me go." She knows that second sentence is a lie but she needs to leave here fast.
"And you think that's enough reason for me to let you go?" Azanraba scoffs.
