The Track

It was a cold dark night with no moon. But it was compensated by the bright LED bulbs not letting an ant go out of sight.

If it were any other day, I would have simply enjoyed playing cards with my boys. But tonight, it was different.

Though the cool breeze swept past me, a drop of sweat bead rolled down my forehead. My leather gloved hand clutched the wheel as if my life depended on it. My knees somehow seemed to knock each other even when they were constantly switching between accelerator, clutch and brakes.

I was racing tonight, gambling everything I owned – a small house, a garage and my little girl's future—to this hideous bet. The irresponsible part of me still blames it on the Friday-night-shot-night challenge.

I was in my last lap and only had to beat one more car ahead of me to claim my win. It wasn't just a race for me; it was to prove that after all these years, I still had it in me. But that night, the fate wasn't on my side.

"Edward, not yet!" A voice. I immediately recognized it as Dan, my ear piece, who was my eyes and ears for the race. Ear pieces, were usually considered to be a money burn, but this boy was worth it all.

"I know!" I exclaimed, changing the gears. I pushed a few buttons on the right, letting the extra engine oil flow into my beast for better lubrication. "No boost up."

"You know you need to." Dan replied in authority, as if he were a general in command.

"Time, Dammit!" I shouted, despite the fact that the microphone was near my mouth. It was obvious that Dan could hear me breathing, let alone my shouts. But I was losing the moment and the gravity of the situation was making me take hasty decisions. I needed to buy time to win.

It seemed like Dan vowed silence for the next minute and I wondered if our networks were lost. Ignoring the crazy hammering of my heart, I glanced at the rear-view mirror and found that the other cars were far behind me. So I pressed my foot on the accelerator.

"Edward!" Dan screamed. "Slow!" It seemed as if he wouldn't let me drive with my will. "You are going to..."

Time now seemed to slow down and I could hear the gears shuffle and finally settle into one. The cheer of the crowd seemed to dim and the lights tried to blind me.

Even when Dan was literally shouting my name over and over again, I couldn't make any sense out of it. I had finally managed to race ahead of all cars and was about to celebrate, but I felt a small bump.

With speedy cars, a small bump or even a slight touch causes our world to fall apart. And just like that, I lost my balance and my beast went tumbling and circled around like a vulture.

The last thing I remember before losing consciousness was my daughter telling me that she loved me. It had definitely changed, not only mine but her life as well.

A/N: If you've read my story 'Wildly Driven', then it'll be more recognizable. Hope you enjoyed Edward's point of view about the whole race.

Let me know what you think. Please vote, comment and share :)
