Blind Date

Jennifer picked up her bag, cursing under her breath. It was seven in the evening and she would have preferred to spend her time home in front of her laptop. She had never liked the idea at all, but unlike other times, this one was being closely monitored by her best friend, Sara.

Jennifer knew she was beautiful. It was the only reason why she was recognized even when her grades were up high. Even though she had made it on top of her career ladder in architecture, she knew that people thought it was only because of her beauty. She was successful and beautiful, if people envied that then, it was not her problem.

She had pushed all of them so far that they were now scared of her to even have a friendly chat. Her trust issues stood tall and no one had dared to enter her heart, not that she bothered, but it definitely did bother her friends and family.

She had to settle down, at least that's what they told her.

"Find a nice guy and for once lose that frown to replace it with a smile." Sara had told her last night. She was the one to force Jenny into the blind date for which she was getting ready now.

Jennifer closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying not to lose her temper. It was a date and Jen knew the drill. He would compliment on how beautiful she looked and then the conversation would start with how he had never seen anyone more gorgeous before. She had been with those types before until she realized that it was not her type at all.

She was on a mission and she was determined to see if the poor guy had anything more to add than the things she had already heard.

"Finally!" Sara said, who was waiting for her friend outside the door. "Never thought you would take time to get ready for this date." Sara wriggled her eyebrows comically.

Being her high school buddy, Sara had seen her friend cry because she was beautiful. Jen's last boyfriend had often commented that looks weren't everything. When they had broken up, Sara's friend had given up on men for good. But Sara knew that if the right guy came along, she would see her friend happy again.

Now, as Sara teased her, Jennifer only rolled her eyes. "You really don't have to drive me there." Jen said, walking past Sara to put on her heels. "I own a GPS on my car and I'm perfectly capable of driving myself to that restaurant."

"Knowing you for years, I know you'll spend it in Starbucks and say you met him." Sara said. Jen often stood those poor men up. "Once I know you are going into the restaurant, I'll tell the waiters to keep an eye on you."

Jennifer let out a small smile play on her lips. "Well, come on then driver, I'm ready for adventure."

As Sara drove, Jennifer sat with her iPad designing a new building that was due in her office. Nerves never came up until the car was halted at the said restaurant.

"Blind date?" Jennifer asked Sara quizzically. She kept her iPad back in her bag and looked back at the same restaurant. "Which restaurant has a name like that? It's too dark. Are you planning to hire to kill me here?"

Sara laughed. "His name is Noah Baker." Before Jennifer could ask further questions, Sara dropped her and drove away.

Uncertainly, she entered the restaurant and gave her name. Surely, it was matched under Noah Baker's name. The halls were only lit with candles on the tables and a waiter came by to her rescue. He led her into another room wearing a night goggles. At this, though Jen was cursing her friend for making her do this, she was curious to know what it entailed. If worse came her way, she knew how to kick-box. The room was pitch black and she could see nothing.

"Your seat, Ms Hartman." He said, guiding her to sit down. Temporarily blinded, she took his hand to help herself down. "The one who's sitting in front of you is Noah Baker. Good luck with your date. I'll be back in another ten minutes to take your order."

"I can't believe I agreed to this." Jennifer muttered, trying to adjust her eyes. At this another guy, who probably sat in front of her laughed. "So, you are Noah?"

"Or anything you want me to, Jennifer." Noah said flirtingly. "Are you able to see anything?"

"Yeah! The sun, moon and the stars too." She rolled her eyes. "My friend is going to die today."

Noah laughed again. "Mine too. I have been sitting here waiting for you since ten minutes and my eyes have still not adjusted to the darkness."

"I don't know if you are complaining about the darkness or me being late." Jen replied sarcastically.

"You are smart." Noah said with a chuckle. "I like that in my women too. Brad has hopes of living now."

Jennifer was yet again taken aback. She had never been on a date with a guy who was flirting with her so openly without even seeing her face.

"Do you like your women with a seven stitched scar on her face too?" Jen asked. "Then I guess you are lucky."

"Really?" Noah asked, both surprised and excited. "I always wanted one, you know. The badass kind of look."

Jennifer snorted. Though she had not seen his face, she was sure he was charming her with his talks. Sara had definitely thought through about this, she mused.

"Ah, finally." Noah said, letting out a satisfactory sigh. "I was running out of my jokes to hear you laugh."

When Jennifer wanted to reply back smartly, the waiter came by to check on their orders. After few minutes, their order of fries and burgers came.

"I promise to get you actual food later." Noah said. "I don't actually trust my food when there is no light to see."

"Exactly, who knows if we are given a cockroach on our plate?" Jennifer laughed.

"You are so imaginative." Noah said, something that Jen hadn't heard about herself before. "What do you do?"

"An architect. You?"

"I'm into business, real estate kind of thing. Buy things, break it apart and sell it for more profit."

"Seems rich."

"It is." Noah said. "But my luck is down sliding and was hoping to live with my future girlfriend's money. I only agreed to this so that I could charm her with my words and get her obsessed with me. It's all win-win."

"Are you sure you remember this is still a date?" Jen never remembered the last time she had smiled on a date. "You are giving out all your secrets."

"Nah, I trust you." He said. "And hopefully have a lot of money to spend on me. I'm really expensive."

"What makes you think that I'll be your girlfriend?" Jen asked, amused by his confidence. "For all I know you are high maintenance."

At this Noah laughed and she could hear him lick his fingers as he finished his meal. "I'm done with this darkness. You want to go out with me? For a proper dinner?"

"Sure." Jennifer said without any hesitation. She had liked the company so far and even without seeing her, he had called her for another date. "Let's get out."

Noah lifted his hand up and soon a waiter was by their side, escorting them out. They had formed a queue as the waiter held Noah's hand, he got hold of Jennifer's. For the first time, she didn't protest.

When they were led out, she was blinded by the sudden light and closed her eyes. When she opened them, adjusting her sight, she saw him looking at her in wild eyes.

Looking at her date, Jennifer's eyes shone with anger. "You? The same Noah? Didn't you tell me to sit still and look pretty at the party?"
