Chapter Eighteen
Mira learned a few things from dinner that night; a man by the name of Carter Erikson was in charge of handling all the records and information databases, Leo was supposed to be at the dinner, and that all of these people absolutely worshipped the very ground her father stepped on. If he jumped off a cliff, they'd follow in a heartbeat. It was horrifying actually.
Now, three days later, she was walking through the front doors of the New York City Public Library, three books in hand. Anything her father said or she overheard any of the higher ranking members talking about she'd write down on a small piece of notebook paper after and shove it within the pages of the novels. It wasn't much, but it was a start, and she needed to have something to offer to the two families.
She smiled as she walked up to the librarian and handed the books over to her.
"Hi, I'm just returning these. I should also have some on hold I wanted to grab." She held out her library card. The woman scanned it and reached under the desk, revealing three new selections.
"You're all set." She said and Mira took the books and slid them into her backpack.
She fought the frown that tried to creep onto her lips as she walked back out towards the car, Leo awaiting her in the drivers seat.
Nothing out of the ordinary had happened since their encounter in the surveillance room, and if anything he was overly friendly, but something about his kindness was sinister. Like that girl in high school that always gave you backhanded compliments that came across nice but secretly made you want to hide in a bathroom stall and cry.
"Never took you as much of a reader," Leo commented as she slipped into the passenger seat. She shrugged.
"Yeah I picked it up earlier this year, I like the break from reality," she replied cooly. The two were basically smothering each other with pointless small talk.
"What, the Bonnano princess wants to escape reality, huh? Go figure, people would kill to be in your position." He scoffed. Mira rolled her eyes. Sure people would kill to be in her position, but coming to terms that her father was a killer had proven itself to be incredibly difficult. Not everyone could blow someone's brains out without batting an eye.
"So what exactly do you do?" Mira asked. She saw him around but still had no clue what it was he did for her father, but she realized after his absence was acknowledged at dinner a few nights ago, that he had to be someone pretty important.
"I'm your father's assistant. Anything too dangerous for him to be actively present at, I go to instead. Sometimes I handle negotiations, other times I make sure transactions run smooth." He replied, shocking her with his honesty. Part of her expected him to give her s smart ass response.
That must've meant Leo had more blood on his hands than her father, physically speaking.
"Gotcha," she said, turning her attention to the window. She had more important things to worry about than Leo, like figuring out how she was going to get into Carter Erik son's office. If she could get into the information database, she could probably find everything the Lucchese needed. Of course that meant finding a way to unlock the door and not get caught by Erickson himself. One thing she did notice about Erikson during their dinner together was that he could be sweet talked. He enjoyed listening about her life, and liked it even more when she complimented his own achievements. If anything, that would be her way in.
Once they were back, Mira balancing her stack of books as she walked down the hall. A few paces in front of her, she saw Erickson stepping out of his office. Sparing a quick glance around to make sure no one was around, she purposefully knocked into him, her books falling to the ground.
Erikson's eyes went wide as he dropped down next to her to help her gather her scattered books.
"My bad miss Amira, I didn't even see you," he apologized innocently as he handed her a book. She offered him a kind smile.
"Oh don't worry about it," she insisted, shaking her head. "I'm just a little out of it, I've had a killer migraine all day and didn't bring any medicine with me."
His eyes lit up.
"I have some ibruprofen in my office I can grab you real quick?" He offered and Mira let out a relieved sigh.
"Really? That would be great, if it's no trouble." He shook his head quickly.
"No of course not, come on in." He lifted his keycard to the scanner and opened his office door, allowing her to follow him inside. He hastily dropped his bag, phone and keycard on the desk, wrapping around and dropping down to his knees as he rustled through the cabinet. Mira eyes the keycard, and before she even could think about it, snatched it up and slipped it into her pocket. Erickson rose to his feet, holding the container out to her. She popped too pills and returned it back to him.
"Thank you so much," she said as he lead her out of the office, not even noticing his missing keycard.
"Of course, I'll see you later alright? Get some rest." He walked off towards the elevator and Mira began walking in the opposite direction,
Clutching her books tightly to her chest.
She waited to hear him call out her name or rush back to his office to search for the keycard, but when she glanced over her shoulder, the elevator doors had already closed.
Cautiously, she spun back around and made her way to his office door. She lifted the keycard to the scanner. The scanner beeped, followed by a click as the door unlocked. She quickly slipped inside, closing the door behind her and releasing a nervous breath.
She needed to make this quick, in and out. She walked over and sat down at his desk, reaching over and placing her hand on the mouse. The computer screen lit up, prompting a password. She thought for a moment, her mind raking over their previous conversations. He'd mentioned his son's tenth birthday was coming up on the 7th. She typed in the date, shocked when it actually unlocked.
She was overwhelmed by the vast number of databases on the computer, clicking through several. She read through the files, searching for anything having to do with other four families. A file named 'Lucchese operations' caught her eyes. She clicked on it, seeing a number of folders, all depicting a different one of the Lucchese's operations. She clicked on the one labeled, 'Imported goods', revealing a number of correspondences between them and a vendor, describing a location, the agreed amount of drugs and payment. She scanned through several others, realizing that they had information on Lucchese's every move.
She clicked out of the file, ready to move on to another one when she heard Erikson's voice just outside the door. Her stomach dropped as she quickly placed the keycard where she'd snatched it, put the computer to sleep and grabbed her stack of books as she hunkered under the desk. She held her breath as she heard the door open, Erikson releasing a frustrated huff as he walked over and grabbed the keycard from the desk.
"Thank god, Bonnano would've had my ass," he mumbled to himself before exiting the office. Once she heard the door click shut she released the air she'd been holding in her lungs. That was too fucking close.
Carefully, she rose back into the chair and clicked the mouse. The screen lit up and she moved on to the next file. It was a list of names, none of which she recognized other than those of the five bosses. Some names were highlighted green, while others were red. She found that Antonio Lucchese was highlighted red, the name beneath it not highlighted at all: Adrian Genovese.
She hated that his name was on the list, because if anything it felt almost like a hit list. She quickly clicked all the files and emailed them to herself, clearing them from Erikson's outbox there weren't any traces of her left on his end.
She logged out and grabbed her things. Time to dine and dash. She hesitated as she reached for the door handle, praying she wouldn't somehow bump into someone on her way out and be asked why the hell she was in Erikson's office in the first place.
Thankfully, the hall was empty as she slipped out of the office, walking speedily down the hall. She was almost to the elevator when she passed the training room. She slowed to a stop as she peered inside, noticing the large crowd of people wrapped around the boxing ring, chanting like they were at some kind of fight club.
Curiosity got the best of her and Mira made her way inside, watching as this kid got completely pummeled inside the ring. Blood dropped from his nose as his opponent grinned across from him, their fists raised.
"We do this to all the fresh meat," Leo's voice startled her, nearly sending her into a coma with how far her heart nearly leapt out of her chest.
"Beat them to shit?" She asked, wincing as the kid took another blow to the gut.
"I guess you could call it that, but it's more of a way to weed out the weak. A lot of young, desperate kids come looking for work, and half of them have no clue what they're getting themselves into. If they stick things out even after getting the shit beat out of them, it means they're serious. Plus, it's fucking fantastic to watch." He grinned as his eyes followed the two fighters movements. These people really were animals. She wanted to leave, the kid was barely even putting up a fight anymore, but she couldn't seem to bring herself to look away.
Finally, the kid fell to the ground unconscious, his opponent lifting his fists victoriously.
"Whose next?" He called out, the kid now completely disregarded as he was heaved over someone's shoulder and carried out of the room.
Leo suddenly threw his arm around Mira.
"Hey, we got Bonnano's daughter over here, I think we should give her the complete family welcome," he called to the man in the ring. Everyone's eyes darted in Mira's direction and it took everything in her not to whip around and slap Leo across the face. Of course he wanted to see her get the shit beaten out of her, sick prick.
Suddenly, everyone moved aside to clear a path from her to the ring, cheering excitedly. Every nerve in her body pushed her to turn around and haul ass out of there, but she even if she did get her ass whooped, no way was she going to pussy out in front of all these people. Especially Leo, she'd at least stand her ground so he'd wipe that cocky smirk off his face.
"Here," she handed everything in her hands over to her, plastering a smile on her face. "Be a dear and hold on to these for me." His eyes sparkled with excitement from her words as he took them without a word. She spun around and made her way towards the ring, slipping beneath the ropes. The man before her had at least a hundred pounds on her, his arms lined with tattoos as her towered over her.
"Miss Amira, it's a pleasure to meet you, I'm Lorenzo. Don't hold back on me now sweetheart, I can tell you can pack a punch," he winked at her before backing up, putting some space between them. He raised his hands into a defensive position, and Mira did the same, trying not to look as scared as she was. The closest thing to a fight she'd ever gotten into was during a soccer match when a girl shoved her to the ground and she retaliated. Hopefully now, some of her training with Adrian would pay off. And if not, at least she wouldn't look to stupid getting her ass beat.
He shifted his weight and began circling around the ring. She mimicked his movements, barely registering his movements as his fist came flying at her cheek. His fist connected with her jaw and she stumbled back, her face on fire.
She regained her balance and fought to keep any tears from escaping her now watering eye. Ok, so maybe next time she tried dodging or blocking the hit.
Around them the crowd of people "oooh'd", like they could imagine the force behind his punch. She felt her blood begin to boil with adrenaline. She decided that no matter what she'd find a way to land a punch on that pretty little face of his to make up for the bruise that would surely form on hers. Even if she ended up unconscious like the last kid, seeing the shock of him getting nailed in the face by her fist would make it worth it.
His fist jutted out again, this time from the opposite direction, but now she was ready. She dodged it, shoving his hand away from her face. She was going to let him keep taking shots at her, at some point there had to be an opening for her to strike back. He came at her again and again, and somehow, she managed to dodge or block him, her quick reaction time kicking in. It was one of her biggest strengths on the field, being able to evaluate a situation in a split second and make a move accordingly.
He pulled his fist back, and Mira moved quickly to duck under his punch and ram her fist into his jaw in an uppercut motion. She couldn't help the smile that crossed his lips as he recoiled back, his hand flying to his jaw in pain. Yeah, she felt pretty badass.
She prepared for him to throw another punch, but instead his foot swung up, landing a blow straight to her gut. Mira doubled over in pain as he gave her no time to recover and pulled her into a tight headlock, his arm pressing tightly against her windpipe. She struggled for air as his arm tightened, taking her nails in the flesh of his forearm.
She remembered what Adrian had taught her as her vision become spotty. Mustering all of her strength, she latched onto his arm and swung him forward, struggling to lift his body weight as she flipped him over her shoulder and shoved him against the ground. She straddled him, pressing her forearm against his throat and pinning one of his arms to the ground with her free hand.
She struggled as he clawed at her arm, deep scratches drawing blood, but kept applying pressure, until finally, he slapped the ground with his palm a few times, which if she remembered correctly from the movies, meant he yielded. Mira pulled herself off of him, breathing heavily as he grinned up at her in shock.
"Damn, you are Bonnano's daughter after all," he managed between ragged breaths. She offered him her hand and he took, it, pulling himself to his feet.
He patted her on the back and she smiled as everyone cheered and whooped around her. She knew none of them expected her to best Lorenzo, soaking in the glory of her win.
She slipped out of the ring a walked over to Leo who smiled at her, despite the slight disappointment in his eyes. She wanted to say 'nice try asshole', but instead gave him a innocent smile as she took her belongings out of his hands.
"Thanks," she said sweetly, and she meant it. He threw her into that ring expecting her to humiliate herself, but if anything, she just earned everyone's respect. He was the one who should've been humiliated.
