Chapter 32
The next morning Jess, Ash and the Deputy sat around Tabitha's kitchen table. The Deputy was staring at pictures on Jess' phone whilst she explained her theory about Charity's drawings. Ash was only half listening. The other half was wondering what was going on with her lovable, if eccentric, friend and the Colonel.
She couldn't fail to notice that whilst the Deputy and Julia left, he remained. And she was positive he was still somewhere upstairs, even though she'd checked all the spare beds and he was nowhere to be found.
'So, did you drop the lovely Julia home or did you end up answering more of her questions?' Ash asked as a way of distracting herself.
She knew the Deputy could handle a new relationship. In fact, he needed it. But Tabitha's was different. Ever since losing her husband, she'd become self sufficient and hated any mention of relying on men for anything more than pleasure or entertainment. But there was a soft twinkle in her eyes when she looked at the Colonel. It was a look that made Ash worry about her.
'It would have been strange if she didn't have many questions,' he countered.
'So she stayed the night?' Ash winked.
He let out a long, suffering sigh. 'You're psychic, so why don't you tell me what happened?'
'Can't. Haven't seen anything.' She munched on a pancake whilst the other two looked at her in confusion. 'I'm not omnipresent, remember? I can't see and hear all.'
'But you could find out if you wanted to?'
She shook her head. 'Trust me, it's easier to block these kinds of things out and just ask the direct question. It's easier on my head.'
'Still got that migraine?' Jess asked.
'It could have been getting brained by a ruler that did it or...'
'Your gift is playing up,' Jess finished for her.
Ash didn't reply but reached out for her mug of tea, only to have it skirt out of reach before she could touch it. The other two watched as she sighed in frustration and yanked the mug closer to her.
'I've seen some strange things, but moving objects is next level,' admitted the Deputy.
'I'm going to put some binding symbols on my arms after breakfast. Thankfully, so far it's just mugs that I seem to have an issue with.'
'At least it's not tables,' the Deputy muttered. 'I'm pretty sure you almost gave Julia a coronary in the morgue.'
'In fairness, I think there was a lot going on, so me moving a table with my mind was not that big of a deal.'
She shied away from their disbelieving stares, wanting to keep the idea that she was in some ways not a complete alien at the kitchen table.
'Since we're speaking about Julia, did she hear anything from the cops about the morgue?' Jess asked.
'They're sending a team to investigate, but as there's no evidence or even security footage, they'll likely chalk it up to teenage vandals.'
'And Julia is happy with lying to the cops?'
'Even if she did tell them what really happened, what do you think they'd do to her? Talking about ghosts and people with gifts is a one-way ticket to psychiatric evaluation. She'd end up losing her position.'
'And besides, she's intrigued by it,' Ash added.
'She could say that we did it. Technically, that's still the truth,' argued Jess.
But Ash was already shaking her head. 'One, she'd rather be in on the know of something big than just rat us out to the cops. She's a scientist at heart and we're like shiny new test subjects. She wants to understand. Two, she likes her job and anything that could jeopardise that is bad. And three, she trusts Elijah and doesn't want to do anything that could break his trust in her. So she's not someone we have to worry about.'
'She trusts me?' the Deputy asked.
The sisters just stared at him.
'You know, considering you're investigating a murder, you don't notice much,' said Ash.
'It's because I've been investigating a murder that I haven't had time to think about, Julia,' grumbled the Deputy.
'But she's on your mind now,' Ash singsonged.
The Deputy scowled at her and went back to looking at the photos on Jess' phone, effectively blocking her out.
Ash smiled smugly to herself. The Deputy was only just realising that there were more options in his life than he first thought. He was going to be okay.
'So explain this image to me,' he asked Jess.
Jess leaned forward, not surprised that it was the image of Charity and the mystery man.
'You understand that the other images are how she placed people she knew into the nine circles of hell?'
He let out a long, suffering sigh. 'Yes. It's based on a poem by a 16th century philosopher?' He tried to remember the details she'd already told him, but it was difficult. The images she'd captured were so grotesque that he'd found it difficult to listen to her explanation whilst looking at them.
'He was a 14th century poet, philosopher and writer. But that's not really important,' she chided herself. 'Dante wrote about a journey through hell, and each circle of hell is reserved for different sins. Charity took people she knew and effectively accused them of sins and subjected their images to what she must have deemed the correct punishment.'
The Deputy tapped the phone. 'And which circle did Charity draw herself in?'
'Second circle. Circle of lust.'
'And what kind of sins are in this circle?'
'It's a circle to house those who give into their lust. Mostly adulterers.'
'So if we take this as a confession of sorts, Charity was an adulterer?'
'It could mean she was cheating on someone or that the man in the image was using her to cheat on someone else,' Jess clarified. 'That's how the circle works.'
'So this man could have a motive for her murder?'
Ash stopped munching and looked at a dumbfounded Jess.
'I-I never thought of that,' admitted Jess. 'It's possible.'
'So we're looking for a man with a type of lizard tattoo on his back?'
'A lizard tattoo?' Ash asked as Jess pulled the phone back to her.
'I didn't notice a tattoo,' Jess mumbled.
'I had to adjust the settings, but you can just see a clawed foot where Charity's arm is lifting his shirt.'
Ash finished off her pancakes before she noticed how pale Jess had got. She was studying the phone intently, her lips mashed together so tightly that they had turned white.
'Are you okay?' She reached out to Jess, making her jump.
'Daryl has a leviathan tattoo on his back,' Jess whispered as she traced the shape out on the table.
'Leviathan?'
'It's a mythical sea creature. His is a water dragon. He got it done last winter since that's his nickname on the team.'
'And you think this is him?' the Deputy demanded.
'I-I don't know. I mean the height would be right, and the hair, but it's not like Charity drew his face.'
'But you're sure he has a tattoo that matches this?' he pressed her.
'The dragon's foot looks like that. It's the lowest place on his back.'
'Did he have any history with Charity? Did you ever see them together?'
'What? No. They were never together-' but she cut off as she thought about what his teammate had said to her.
'What is it?' Ash urged her.
'When I broke it off with him, one of his teammates said that he'd been seeing other people whilst he'd been with me. He once caught a blonde-haired woman sneaking out of his room.'
'Did he see her face?' The Deputy sat forward, his piercing eyes on her.
'No. He said he only saw her hair.'
'It would all still fit with this image. If Charity was seeing him whilst he was in a relationship with you, it would explain why she drew them in this circle. Maybe she was getting tired of being the other woman? Maybe that's why she was going to the party the night she disappeared? She was going to tell you everything, but she never got a chance to tell you because Daryl found her first. He was at the party with you, wasn't he?'
'Yes, but he can't have done it,' Jess said, finally finding her voice.
'Was he at the party the entire night? Was he with you the entire night?' he clarified before she could answer.
'Well...no, but there's no way that Daryl would have done anything,' Jess shrieked. She pushed away from the table and left the room in a rush, leaving Ash and the Deputy to stare after.
The Deputy hung his head. 'I should apologise. I came on too strong.'
'You did. But give her time to process this. She may not have loved Daryl, but that doesn't mean she didn't get close.'
'You've met this Daryl? Do you think he's capable of this?'
'I've met him once, and the boy was high and drunk. And I was too focused on Jesse to notice much,' she admitted.
'Tell me if you think I'm barking up the wrong tree.'
Ash clicked her tongue against her teeth. 'I can't,' she said honestly.
He sighed. 'We need to look into this guy.'
'Is there anyone at the station that you trust? I doubt the Sheriff is going to listen to you, given how we came about this.' She tapped the phone even though the screen had gone blank.
The Deputy sighed. 'There may be two that I can trust to get me the answers and keep their mouths shut about my investigation into a case that isn't mine.'
'Then do it. If this Daryl is capable of murder, I don't want him anywhere near my sister, or anyone else on campus,' she said sternly. 'If he murdered Charity, then he needs to pay for what he did.'
