Chapter 45
Faye had never been to the Henry and her brother's shop before, but it was easy enough to find once she pushed passed the crowds closer to the corner flower shops. She'd convinced her father to take her out for some errands and abandoned him at the florist, where he was hoping to find an appropriate bouquet for Mary. Making an excuse for fresh air given her delicate senses, Faye rushed down the street to where she knew the Glass Brothers Paranormal Investigations, Inc. store front was located.
She would have walked by the tiny storefront had she not glanced through the shop window and noticed Robert hunched over his desk. Pushing into the shop, Robert didn't even look up from his work as she padded closer.
"I'm sorry, but we aren't taking any new clients at this time," Robert stated, his voice trailing off when he finally looked up and locked onto Faye's face. "Oh, Ms. Marshall, I apologize! I thought—"
"It's alright, is Henry here? I need to speak with him."
Robert nodded toward the apartment door. "He's in back. It's good to see you again."
"And you as well, Robert. Thank you," she replied, striding toward the door. Her time was limited, so she was relieved to find that Henry sitting at the table in the apartment reading the newspaper. When he saw Faye enter, his eyes went wide in shock. Rising to his feet, he crossed the room quickly to meet her with a tight embrace.
"What are you doing here?" he said, pulling away.
"I don't have much time," she replied.
"Does this mean your father's had a change of heart?" Henry asked. Faye smirked.
"I wish that were the case, but I'm winning him over. He told me he hired you to investigate the incident at Mary's home."
"Yes, but me and my brothers haven't had much luck. You'd think with Jacob's infatuation with Ms. Huxley, it would be easier to speak with the woman, but he has been as persistent as gentlemanly possible," Henry laughed.
"There are few things that can stand between your brother and a beautiful woman," Faye said, putting a hand on Henry's shoulder. "I came because I wanted to see you again. And also so I could give you this."
Faye pulled a familiar-looking yellow ticket from her dress pocket. Henry took it from her, astonished.
"Where did you get this?"
"Mary bought four tickets with the intention that I go with that miserable Percival Harris from her party. I told my father in no uncertain terms that I had absolutely no interest in the gentleman. Besides, once I congratulated him on his sound decision to hire you to investigate the matter, it was only a matter of time before he came up with the idea to invite you to see firsthand what sort of tricks Ms. Huxley was up to."
Henry flashed a wicked smile.
"You are positively diabolical," Henry said, kissing Faye on the cheek.
"I won't deny it! Now, I told him I would send you the ticket, so when you meet us at the theater, remember to mention that," Faye replied with a wink.
"This at least solves the squabble over who gets to use Jacob's tickets now," he mused.
"How did Jacob get tickets to the show?"
"Honestly, I'd rather not say, but this gives all three of us a chance to divide and conquer."
Faye nodded in agreement, though she was not entirely certain what Henry had in mind. She glanced quickly at her wristwatch, knowing her father would emerge from the floral shop at any moment to seek her out.
"Well, regardless of you and your brother's plans, I am looking forward to spend the evening with you." Faye took Henry's hand and pulling him close, leaning her face into his shoulder as he held her close. She closed her eyes for a moment, savoring the smell of him and realizing how deeply she missed every aspect of Henry.
This had to work.
Pulling away, she gave Henry's hand a squeeze. "I just know once Mary has an opportunity to really meet you, she will be just as smitten with you as I am." She leaned forward and kissed Henry on the lips, missing their soft warmth more than ever.
"And your father?" Henry asked when he pulls away. "Do you think this will endear me to him as well?"
"I won't make any promises, but I know if you win Mary over, you will have him as well!" Faye replied with a wink. "Now I must go, but I shall see you at the theater!"
Before Henry could beg her to stay, Faye was gone.
