Day 2 - Summoning

"You ready Evania?" Adrian, my brother, asks.

"Yeah," I reply grimly. Today's Halloween. The ceremony day. When normal people will be out Trick-or-treating, my family will be in a quiet, deserted place doing our tradition... Calling the dead.

"Good." was all he said in reply. He was calm, but with a grim look on his face. We all know what's going to happen, we're just unsure if we can take it. I turn and cherish the life of the woods... While it's still here.

We walk into a clearing, my other brother, sister and parents are already here. "Ready?" our mother asks.

I nod. Yeah, I'm ready.

"Good, in positions." We gather around a star in a circle, each of us at one point. Mother, though, was in the middle holding an ancient book in her hands. She looks at each of us, making sure we're ready. She then starts to chant. My stomach tightened into a knot, listening to the chant.

"We call the spirits from up above and down below, to come to us as we came to them..." My mother kept chanting the same words over and over again. The star started to glow gold. The wind picked up, blowing my hair back. It was starting. The summoning. I stared at the star, my mom in the middle chanting. She then stepped back, as a pale green ghostly figure was emerging from the ground. From the center of the star. I stared at it in fascination and dread. The knot in my stomach grew tighter. My mom stopped chanting. The wind died down. She was now on the outer rim of the circle, looking at the ghost, like the rest of us.

"Hello." She greats, bowing her head. The ghost bowed his head in return.

"I have been summoned," he said, his voice raspy. "What may I do for you?"

"We have summoned you for an offering and a request." My mother answered evenly, her voice never waving.

He nodded, "What is it?"

"We would like you to grant our family a year of immunity from supernatural beings-" She gestured to my brothers, sister, father, and I. "-and in return, you can choose the member of your choice to be sent to hell for eternity." My mother finished. He nodded at this.

"Very well. I will grant you this wish." He then turned brighter and brighter chanting words I can't understand. The wind picked up again, coming gusts. I shivered goosebumps forming on my skin. The ghost rose in the air, the chant getting louder and louder. Until it stopped. The wind died down and the ghost floated to the floor.

"It's done. Now my payment." He looked at each child in turn. "This one." He whispered. "Yes." The knot grew tighter, my whole body now shaking in fear. No. It can't be. He lunged, his pale green ghostly form engulfing the victim. Me. I screamed in agony upon contact and was sent to hell.
