9. Shattered Hearts

^ Me af Right Now ^

// Castiel's POV

"I think I'm in love with you."

The words rang through his ears after he felt soft lips against his.

That was last night. Where he was sure he had been dreaming.

Dreaming of Dean climbing into bed with him, Cas pleading him to stay...a shared kiss and love confessions.

It was all a dream. Cas was now awake. But he didn't want to open his eyes and find himself under a bridge, cold and wet. He didn't want to find himself without Dean.

Maybe the soft cushioning was just his mind playing tricks on him.

Castiel didn't dare open his eyes.

Until he felt a strong arm wrap around his face and pull him against something.

Castiel's eyes fluttered open and his surroundings cleared.

He found himself being held against Dean's body. Well, at least that part wasn't a dream. And if this wasn't a dream...that meant Cas was really kicked out of his apartment.

On the bright side, if this wasn't a dream, that would mean that Dean loved him. Oh dear.

Castiel did his best not to move. This could be a once in a lifetime opportunity! He inhaled Dean's scent and tried to memorize it.

Dean backed away and snuggled his face against the pillow.

Castiel could see how peaceful he looked. His lashes draping over his freckled cheeks. How his lips were slightly parted.

He did his best not to touch him. So he just stared...and counted. He counted Dean's freckles starting from his nose down to the edge of his shirt.

And when Dean began to stir awake, furrowing his brow as the sunlight danced along the freckles of his face, Castiel closed his eyes and pretended to sleep.

He felt the bed shift as Dean stressed. Dean turned to his side and looked at the 'sleeping' angel.

Dean smiled to himself and scooted closer to him, so their noses brushed against each other slightly.

Dean wished Cas was awake so he could see his eyes again.

"I really do think I'm in love with you..." he whispered, moving strands of hair from Cas' forehead.

Castiel shifted slightly, trying his best not to freak out too much.

Dean sighed and kissed Cas' forehead. When he pulled away his eyes meet with Castiel's.

"Cas! How long have you been awake?" Dean asked, scooting away from him.

Castiel blinked a couple of times before sitting up, smiling.

"Me? Oh I just woke up!" He said, moving the sheets off of him and climbing out of bed.

"Cas, wait!" Dean called after him.

But it was to late...the sheets had tangled around Cas' foot and sent him falling hard on the floor.

"Son of a-- "

"I tried to warn you." Dean laughed, unwrapping the blanket from Cas' leg.

Castiel groaned and let Dean help. His face was heating up and he did his best to calm it down.

"There we go." Dean smiled and let go of his leg. Castiel quickly sat up and brushed himself off, making sure his growing blush had calmed down before turning around to face Dean.

"I'm gonna go use the bathroom." And he walked hurriedly out of the room.

"You're welcome." Dean mumbled, getting out of bed. It didn't seem like Cas had just woken up. No one is that awake in the morning. Unless he was an alien! That would explain a lot. Well...he was pretty hot for an alien. And he probably had no idea where anything was in the house.

Dean chuckled and ran after the little ali-- angel.

"Morning." Sam greeted, fixing up eggs.

"Where'd Cas go?" Dean asked, scratching his belly.

"In the bathroom." Sam replied.

"He knew where it was?"

"No...but I told him."

"Alright."

Dean walked into the living room and tossed himself on the couch, wondering how much Cas had actually heard.

A few moments later, Sam was setting the table and Cas was wandering around the house, staring at the walls and whatever pictures he could find.

Dean watched him walk around until he stopped and stared at one of the pictures on the wall. He got up and stood behind Cas.

"That's my mom and dad at our old house." Dean whispered.

Castiel nodded and stared at the smiling faces behind the glass.

"Where are they now?" He asked, not looking away from the photo.

"Um..." Dean scratched the back of his neck. "They're in a better place now." He said, sniffling.

Castiel turned around and faced Dean with sad eyes.

"What happened...?"

"House fire. Mom pushed us all out...and our dad ran back inside to try to save her...dumb son of a bitch..." Dean scoffed.

"Oh Dean...I'm so sorry..." Cas whispered, his already dewy eyes becoming even more painful.

"It's alright, Ca-- "

And then Cas' arms were wrapped around Dean's middle, pulling him into a tight, comforting hug.

"I'm so sorry Dean..." he whispered against his chest.

Dean's eyes teared up and he wrapped his arms around Cas' shoulders and pressed his face against the top of Cas' head.

They held each other for a few moments before Sam cleared his throat from the dining room and they pulled away.

"Um...breakfast is ready..." Sam said, pointing a spatula behind him.

"Right...thanks Sammy." Dean smiled and walked into the kitchen.

Castiel bit the inside of his cheek and continued to look at pictures.

"It's hard for him you know..." Sam whispered, now standing next to him.

Castiel looked over at him and furrowed his brow.

"Well...it should be. But...you say this so calmly. Is it not hard on you?" Cas inquired.

"Yes, of course it is. It's just not as hard as it is for Dean. Our parents died when I was a baby. I don't have the memories Dean has. He pulled me out of that fire you know. Our dad just dropped me in his arms and told him to run. I am do feel the pain of losing my parents, but...I can't imagine what it would be like-- what it is like for my brother." Sam sighed. "He's been through so much, Cas. I hope that him meeting you will clear some of it up."

Castiel's eyes widened and he slowly nodded, not quite understanding why there was a possibility that he could help Dean...but he didn't want to ask.

Sam walked away and sat at the table, Dean already eating.

Castiel sighed and walked over to the table, sitting down and slowly eating eating his food.

"This is good, Sam." Cas smiled.

"Thanks." Sam replied, smiling back at him.

Castiel glanced at Dean a few times, trying to read him. Trying to read any emotions off of him.

But Dean didn't say a word the entire meal.

+++++

Castiel ran around the room, making sure he hadn't left a mess or anything of his behind.

He quickly made Dean's bed, threw on his jacket and ran towards the front door.

"Whoa, Cas slow down." Dean laughed.

Castiel quickly turned to the side, seeing Dean staring at him from the couch.

"D-Dean! Hello..." Cas smiled, straightening out his sweater.

"Where you headed in such a hurry?" Dean asked, standing up and walking towards him.

"I um...I was just heading out." Cas mumbled, pointing behind him.

"Oh cool! I'll come with." Dean smiled widely. "Just let me get my camera and jacket." And he was running off into his room.

Castiel bit his bottom lip and sighed before quietly stepping out of the house and hurriedly walking away.

"Okay ready! Cas, let's go!" Dean called, running to the door, bouncing with excitement.

"Cas?" Dean asked once he saw there was no one waiting for him.

"Cas?" He asked, looking under the couch.

"Cas?" He asked, looking behind the curtains.

"Cas??" He called, opening the door and stepping outside and looking around.

"Cas..." He whispered. "I've been abandoned."
Dean sulked and his bottom lip quivered.

"Well, I'm not a Baggins, but I'm going on an adventure." Dean nodded and walked out the door, hopefully headed to where Cas was.

Oh, by the way, Sam's at the library studying for his finals so he wasn't left alone in the house.

Dean walked around, his camera in his hands, wondering where Cas would be headed.

Castiel was obviously walking to his destination because Dean's car was still there and Dean was sure Cas wouldn't steel his car. So he shouldn't have been far.

Dean ran down the street until he reached the division of the road.

Dean looked both ways, trying to figure out where Cas would be going.

Maybe he was at the park? No...he wouldn't be in a huge hurry to get there.

A diner? For Ellen's burgers maybe? No...he just had breakfast and that's nothing to hide.

His apartment? Maybe. No...he was kicked...out...oh crap.

Dean ran back to his car, started the ignition and drove to Cas' apartment.

+++++

Castiel ran up to the tall, rundown building, out of breath. He kneeled beside the pile of al his things. Everything looked so old and well, now, wet from last night's rain.

Castiel pushed aside chairs and a small coffee table to get to the paintings hidden underneath.

His eyes filled with tears as he saw what had become of his work.

The paintings he could find were wet and smudged or their art. Most of the canvases had been torn apart.

Castiel dug deeper and pulled out his box of paints and pastels. Cas groaned when he saw his materials floating in a puddle of water.

He pulled out tubes of paint and started emptying them out into the street. He grabbed pastels and crushed them into his hands, the color staining his skin.

Castiel was crying at that point. He grabbed smeared paintings and sketchbook pages and began tearing them apart.

"Cas!"

Castiel ignored the callings and grabbed another painting...but he stopped.

It was the painting of Dean he had been working on. The canvas had a hole at the bottom and half of it was smudged and deformed.

Castiel's breath was ragged and tears were staining his face and dripping onto the cold cement.

Castiel pressed the painting close to him and hugged it, trying his beat not to scream out in the open.

"Cas! Christ, Cas..." Dean ran up to him, out of breath. He stared down at the little furniture and deformed paintings.

Castiel pulled away from the canvas in his hands and began tearing it apart from the hole that was already there.

"Whoa! Whoa whoa, Cas..." Dean pulled the painting away from him and grabbed his shoulders, forcing Cas to look at him.

Castiel looked at him in shock, his nose was red and his eyes puffy.

"What happened?" Dean asked, carefully.

"I...I came to see if there was anything here I could...take home...or rather just preserve until I found a home...." Cas mumbled, rubbing his eye. "But...everything's ruined, Dean! All my hard work! Everything I've lived for! Everything is gone!" He cried.

"Oh, Cas, baby no." Dean sighed and wrapped his arms around him, snuggling Cas into him. "You have a home-- a new home. That's with me...and Sam. We're your new family. And you haven't lost-- we'll get it all back..." Dean soothed.

"I-- my painting...I was working so hard on it..." Cas cried, burying his face against Dean's chest.

Dean looked at the painting he had pulled away from Cas and his jaw dropped.

Even though it was smudged and torn, he could tell that it was supposed to be Dean holding a guitar.

"Cas...that's me." Dean whispered.

"Maybe..." Castiel pulled away from his and wiped his eyes, causing Dean to quickly grab his hands.

"D-Don't wipe your eyes right now Cas, you've got paint all over you now." He smiled.

Castiel blushed and looked away.

"Cas...could you do me a favor?" Dean asked, quietly.

Castiel sniffed and nodded. "Yes."

"Could you...um could you smile? For me?" Dean asked, staring at him hesitantly.

"Um...okay." Cas said, giving Dean a small smile.

Dean sighed in relief and smiled widely.

"Can I ask you something else?"

"Yes?" Cas asked, furrowing his brow.

Dean scratched the back of his neck and looked down at the floor, blush running across his freckled cheeks.

"Can I..." deep breath. "Can I kiss you?" He asked in a barely audible whisper.

Castiel's eyes widened and his mouth opened in shock.

"I um-- I..."

"Shit, sorry! I didn't mean to ask that, I just thought-- sorry! But I what I-- "

"Yes."

"And I know I shouldn't ask that of you and I'm sorry and well-- wait what?" Dean asked, confused.

Castiel's cheeks were red and he started determinedly at Dean.

"Yes. You can k-kiss me."

Dean's eyes widened and he sat there for a moment, not knowing what to do.

After a while, Castiel took a deep breath and closed his eyes.

Dean gulped and slowly leaned in. He quickly kissed Cas for about a millisecond before pulling away, his heart racing and his face red.

Castiel opened his eyes and blinked multiple times.

"W-Was that...it?" He asked, a hint of disappointment in his voice.

Dean blushed hard and looked down.

"Well-- I didn't want to overwhelm you or something and you see I-- "

Dean would've started apologizing but Cas cut him off when he kissed him again, for a longer five seconds.

Castiel pulled away and looked up at the sky, pink blush crossing his cheeks.

Dean's eyes widened and he tired to form words to say. But before he could, Cas started laughing.

His head was bowed and his shoulders were shaking but he was laughing, and it made Dean laugh as well.

So there they were, two adults, sitting in a pile of furniture and paintings, laughing their assbutts off.

"S-Sorry! I don't know why I'm laughing!" Cas said, trying to control himself.

Dean laughed harder and shook his head, covering his face.

Cas just freaking kissed me! Oh god...at least he's happy. If he's happy, I'm happy.

"Come on, Cas. Let's go home." Dean smiled, standing up and extending a hand towards Cas.

Castiel smiled and took his hand, letting himself be pulled up and led to the Impala, receiving a few kisses on his cheek.
