Chapter 8: The Unthinkable News

The bell rang, signaling the end of another school day for Ava, Lily, and Liam. The three siblings gathered their belongings and made their way out of the classrooms, eager to return home and share the events of their day with their mother.

As they approached the front of the school, they noticed an unfamiliar car parked near the entrance. A man they recognized as their mother's close friend, Jason, stepped out of the vehicle, his expression somber and his movements deliberate.

Ava's heart sank, and a sense of unease settled over her. "Jason? What are you doing here?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.

Jason took a deep breath, his eyes filled with a mixture of sorrow and empathy. "Ava, Lily, Liam," he began, his voice low and gentle. "I'm afraid I have some difficult news to share with you."

The siblings exchanged worried glances, their minds racing with a thousand unanswered questions. Lily's hand instinctively reached for Liam's, as if seeking the comfort and reassurance of her younger brother.

"Your mother... she's been in a car accident," Jason continued, his words weighing heavily in the air.

Ava felt her breath catch in her throat, and Lily's grip on Liam's hand tightened. The world around them seemed to slow down, and the sounds of the bustling school yard faded into the background.

"Is she... is she okay?" Lily asked, her voice trembling with fear and uncertainty.
Jason's expression softened with empathy, and he placed a gentle hand on Lily's shoulder. "She's been taken to the hospital. The doctors are doing everything they can, but... I think it's best if we go there, now."

Ava felt a lump forming in her throat, and she struggled to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. Liam's eyes were wide with shock, and he looked to his sisters for reassurance, finding none.

The siblings silently followed Jason to the car, their hearts heavy with the weight of the news they had just received. The drive to the hospital was filled with a deafening silence, punctuated only by the occasional sniffle or muffled sob.

As they approached the hospital, Ava, Lily, and Liam braced themselves for the unknown, their minds and hearts consumed by the fear of what they might find. The future they had envisioned, the moments they had hoped to share with their mother, now hung in the balance, leaving them in a state of profound uncertainty and heartache.
