Epilogue
The world is kind of a blur right now. The millions of flashing cameras. The pushy reporters. The body guards. The stares. All of that makes the minute it took to get to the courthouse doors feel like an hour. Once I am inside I'm hustled off into a little room where a lawyer looking dude is waiting for me. He's saying things, but I'm not completely listening. I keep zoning in and out. The thought that my father is sitting in court for murdering my mother and I'm about to testify is a little distracting.
"Don't let the defense......always........eye contact............keep your......diction.....okay ready to go?", the lawyer dude says.
"Yeah, sure.", I reply tiredly.
"Great." He claps his hands and gives me a thumbs up. Then I'm pushed out of that room and toward too large double doors. I wait until it's time to come in. The most surprising thought runs through my brain.
"I'm scared. I want my mommy and daddy."
That thought doesn't last long. I'm am guided through the double doors. I can tell the judge had just called the next witness because everyone was staring at the door I came through, including my father. He was in handcuffs and staring daggers. I ignore him and walk to the witness stand.
"In your statement, you said that you believe your father is guilty of murdering your mother. Why is that?" Asks a snide little lawyer.
I am silent for a little while. Staring at my father. He gives me a look saying,
"If you do this, you'll regret it." I shoot one back saying,
"Tell someone who cares." Then I begin.
"Well, how 'bout I tell you a little story, and if the jury is smart, it'll have a happy ending."
