Light

Waking up to a cloudy morning, a slight wind clogs up the air with humidity. Camille opens the window of her room to breathe in but there's a certain heaviness that stops her from seeing the beauty of the day. Between her friends and the man in her dreams, Camille can't figure out what is the right thing to do.

Half of the morning she spends it with her mother. Silently watching an episode of Hell's Kitchen, Camelia curls with Camille in the living room. Until Jordan demands his time with his sister, Camille tries to enjoy every moment with her family, understanding that her uneasiness comes only when it's about Adam.

Since the very beginning, her evenings have always been dedicated to Adam. And even though she's holding on to her mixed emotions, Camille wants to keep the traditions they had before. In the hope that she may rekindle her lost feelings for Adam, they watch every sunset together, until the first star twinkles in the horizon. Although the days seem to be less sunny and rainier instead, something they don't seem to mind at all either.

Adam is happier now that Camille is back in his life, seeing her try her best to go back to a normal life gives him a sense of courage to be patient like he's always been. But the truth is. Camille has never been normal, she has never had a normal life. Before her disappearance, she never smiled like she does now, which Adam takes as a reward but a reward at what cost?

Camille forces her mind to forget about everything when she's around people. They have worried enough about her and for now, keeping that carefree smile on her boyfriend's face is a priority.

"You look pale, are you eating enough?" Adam comments as he leans closer to her face, resting his forehead of hers, he stares directly into her violet eyes. Camille freezes for a short moment by the sudden approach, although this would be a gesture that makes her nervous, now she hesitates to react at all.

"Me? Take a look at yourself, you look horrible!" Camille exclaims reaching out to rustle Adam's messy hair. He pulls back and lets a vivid laughter echo in the air, a sound that reassures her of her choice.

In many ways, Camille looks like a breakable doll to Adam, a living antique with smooth skin that, even her pores are invisible sometimes. Eyes so big and perfectly shaped like an almond, so bright with violet color that captivates everyone. Her chin with just the right size to give her cheeks the right plumpness. A mouth so small but the fullness of her lips is just right, her hair cascades over her shoulder in big defined curls that slightly touch her middle back. Camille has the beauty of an angel to his human eyes.

"Stop already," Camille blushes as Adam's eyes peer her from close up, she stops for a minute, wondering how can she avoid the subject of not eating enough and her lack of sleep.

Can she hide the fact that every time she goes to sleep, mysterious dreams torture her? The wishful feeling that enfolds inside every time she's alone. The sensation that someone is watching her every night while she's trapped in a dimension that looks and feels too real. But the suffering seems easier when Adam smiles. His happiness is all she needs to survive this phase.

"Okay, drink some water and we start," Adam hands her a bottle of water.

Camille tides her waves into a high ponytail and takes a sip of water as Adam stretches his muscles, taking a few deep breaths before they start running.

"If you can't catch up, just call out," he suggests with a wink, making Camille roll her eyes as she stretches next to him. Adam grins enjoying the little changes he sees in his girlfriend. Every new gesture is a treasure for him.

"Ready?" Camille asks with a sudden determination, he nods and starts jogging away from her.

Camille watches Adam pace away further from her as she still stands in place looking at his back becoming more distant. Motionless under the drizzle, Camille muses the strange feeling of being left alone as a shadow starts to lurk invisibly from the surrounding trees. Goosebumps rise up as an alerting sign. A deep sentiment of abandonment wraps all over her body as the distance between Adam and her gets bigger and bigger.

Dashing at full speed after Adam, ignoring the loud pounding of her heart, Camille becomes more worried as an unknown force pulls her away, with every step she takes it looks like she running backward.

"Adam..." she tries breathlessly.

Her throat tightens up as she desperately gasps for air. Fearfully running out of energy, tears well up in her eyes at the image of Adam leaving her terrifies her. He's the reason she's trying so hard to be happy even when the emptiness is dragging her down. As long as her priority is Adam's happiness, Camille has something to fight for. Fighting her torment with determination, she stops running and gathers her courage.

"Adam!" she forces her lungs to push all the air out to make her voice louder.

"Adam!!" a painful stab in her throat cuts her off, she winces in desperation but doesn't stop.

The rain starts to pour down, washing away her sweat and tears. Panting heavily, Camille bends down to help her lungs. Adam stops at the desperate sound of her voice. Alarmed, he runs back to her side.

"Camille!" Adam holds her trembling shoulders, worried to see her pale face gasping for air. Camille grips on his wet jacket as the rain and thunder rumble in the sky.

"Stop running like an idiot!!" her voice trembles slightly but the pain in her chest can't let her breathe.

Adam notices the anguish in Camille's eyes. Not caring about the heavy rain, he sits down on the wet grass while she still tries to calm down. He pats the grass, encouraging her to take a seat next to him. Camille hesitates for a moment, taking a look around, realizing they're the only ones crazy enough to be out in the rain.

"Come on, we're already drenched." Adam encourages with a playful smile.

After half a second, Camille decides to take a sit back to back with him. Helping herself to cover up her blushing face. The pain and crazy desperation it's overwhelming, she leans her back on his, feeling his lungs stretching as he inhales. Reclining her head on his shoulder Camille closes her eyes as the sky rumbles angrily. The cold rain washes off her face, big drop splash her face gently.

"I'm sorry..." she whispers quietly.

Adam sits still, feeling her gentle back on his. He closes his eyes as well, letting himself be the support she needs. The pain she feels is noticeable in her voice, an unavoidable agony that tortures Adam just as much as it tortures her.

Remembering with sadness how long it has taken for Camille to open up about her bruises and marks, the days' missing school. The only thing she ever did back then was to run away to Blue Water Lake. Hide from anyone that could recognize the evidence of her father's abuse. To hear her voice tremble as he's the one ahead of her actually reassures him that he has to be strong for her. Camille has endured so much alone, he needs to be brave enough to hold her when she's giving up.

"Now I understand," she whispers letting the sound of the rain calm her agony.

The despair of seeing him run away and almost disappear in the rain has finally awakened her. She knows everything that Adam has gone through because of her, to understand the depths of his love and suffering breaks her even more. Camille never wanted to hurt him, but she can't see him suffer because of her either. Staying with her is making him suffer more.

"I'm not going to lie, that night I felt free. Free to run away and never come back home..." Camille starts remembering the moment she smiled at her freedom, even though she was physically hurt, that's the moment she broke free.

"The moment he laughed at my face. He mocked me while chocking me almost to death, and said... said I wasn't his daughter..." the horrible images flash in her mind as the rain washes her tears.

"All I thought was I'm free, I'm not related to this monster. I'm free..." she continues, while trying to keep her eyes open under the pouring rain.

"Mom told me to go to Paige's house, but all I wanted to do was go to the lake," Camille whispers exhaustedly.

"I ran, I cried and laughed at the same time. I was happy," remembering clearly how a huge weight was lifted from her soul the moment she realized she's not supposed to be under his claws.

"I don't know what happened after that. Where I've been, what I've done... but if I came back is because God gave me a chance," she pauses to take a deep breath, raising her eyes to the dark sky.

"A chance to understand that with my suffering, you were suffering too... When I saw you running away from me, my heart dropped and I wanted to reach you. I was desperately trying to reach you..." Camille admits as Adam listens to her trembling whisper.

"Then, I understood, I've always been running and hiding my pain, even when you've always silently watched over me." she wipes her tears, Camille gathers her courage and crawls in front of Adam.

"I've been so unfair to you..." Adam's face drips with water, but still, he smiles.

His honey eyes full of satisfaction and pride to see her finally breaking away from the heavy darkness that never let her be happy. His wild hair now sticks to his skin, Camille lowers her face to avoid his eyes, she can feel how the blood rushes to her cheeks and ear, hesitantly she places her hands around his neck while resting her forehead on his.

"I won't run away anymore..." although she avoids eyes contact at all cost, she can sense the smile in Adam's face.

He takes a moment to gather his bravery and courage to reach for more. Hoping she will keep her word, Adam reaches out to pull her closer, he lifts up her chin to peer into her eyes. Fighting her embarrassment, Camille can't help to smile at the same time Adam does. As the thunder unleashes violently in the sky, for the first time in a long time, Camille lets go of her fears and lets Adam wash away her pain.

"I will run after you..." Adam whispers under his breath.

As soon as their lips touch, the skies awaken with angry thunders and lightning striking the ground, making them jump. Camille pulls back before giving him a proper kiss, but not far enough from Adam flustered face.

"God must be angry," she comments with a shy smile, as Adam looks up to the pouring rain.

"Probably." Adam agrees, getting to his feet and pulling Camille with him, they smile freely again and starts jogging under the rain.
