Heartless

The first day of school ends normally for Camille, Paige, and Ally. Having separate classes makes it more interesting for everyone to talk about at the end of the day. Paige has enough complaints about the guys she doesn't like already. Ally who's more observant, only comments about her teacher and classes. And for Camille, she doesn't have anything new to add to the experience, thanks to Kate.

"Thanks, guys, but I'm kidnapping Camille, today," Adam jumps out of the blue with his wide grin. Taking advantage of the unexpected sunlight making through the dense clouds, once again he throws his arm over her shoulder.

Taking Camille's hand without even waiting to see Paige and Ally's reaction. He drags Camille to his car and drives away to a place he knows she'll love and lifts her spirit after a rough day of bullying. Even if the day is gray and seems like the sky is about to throw a heavy storm on them, Adam knows that Camille doesn't care at all.

"Where are we going?" she asks over the loud drums of his rock band. Adam winks at her with that bright smile that alleviates her desperation. Camille smiles back and relaxes back on the passenger seat.

Figuring exactly where she's heading as soon as her nose smells the wet muddy grass, hear the revolving water after so much rain. Blue Water Lake.

As soon as Adam stops the car, Camille jumps out and runs towards the crystal blue water. Forgetting the mud or getting her shoes dirty, she spreads her arms wide to feel the wind brush against her face. A heavy scent of dirt after the rain, but it feels fresh and clean. Breathing in, letting it fill up her lungs. Camille closes her eyes and enjoys the moment. Adam steps behind her, his eyes looking at her beautiful waves dance in the wind.

"This is where we first met, and where I got the courage to ask you out," Adam says in a low sweet voice, Camille opens her eyes to meet his tender gaze.

Remembering the time she first met Adam, is not a happy memory for Camille. She was thirteen years old back then, it was one of the many times Steve had torn her into pieces. That day, like every time, she ran away to this little piece of heaven, where she could always find peace. That day, she couldn't go back home and face the monster waiting for her, waiting to break her more.

"Yeah, I remember..." Camille trails of the horrifying memory. That day, Camille had fallen asleep on the green grass, with the sun over her face, the wind cooling her temperature. She found comfort next to the lake. A strange comfort that she could never find anywhere.

Adam found her sleeping, which with her bruises she looked almost dead. The shock to see someone as pretty as her full of painful marks, barefooted, he found himself being brave and tried to help her, but at the sudden touch of his hands, Camille opened her eyes to captivate him with a unique violet color. Adam smiles gently at the memory.

Adam helped clean up her wounds, she found herself trusting him, enjoying his company and laughing with him. Remembering how much she loved Adam back then, how he meant everything for her. A lump starts to build up in her throat with guilt, tears form in her eyes as Adam comes forward to take her hand.

"It's been so long..." he notices her smile and the moisture in her eyes. Squeezing her hand gently, letting her know he's still there for her. Camille knows he deserves so much more than what she's giving him.

She has a burden to him all along, without any complaint. And this is the reason Camille can't understand why she can't feel the same way about him anymore? What has made her stop loving the sweet and caring boy that saved her so many times? What made her forget about someone so caring like Adam? She knows the answer is in her lost memory, which also brings in the fear of realizing that she can't keep Adam tied up to someone so messed up like her.

Letting her guilt get the best of her, Camille sighs trying to keep the tears inside. Hating herself for not loving Adam the way she used to, for forgetting how much he meant to her. For making him believe she still feels the same way, for being a coward and not let him go.

"I'm sorry..." she whispers with the evident need to cry.

"For making you put up with me all this time," Camille says softly letting the guilt to get stronger.

"I'm here," Adam reassures her, wrapping his arms around her trembling body, gently pulling her against his chest to make her feel better. Listening to the calm rhythm of his heart, Camille holds tight to his shirt.

"I know I'm unfair, if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have a reason to be here..." Camille says her eyes holding the tears, not knowing that her words have more meaning that she intends to.

Burying his face in her hair, breathing in the cozy scent of her floral shampoo. Hating herself more, for not feeling anything when Adam shows her nothing but love. Meeting his honest honey eyes, that brighten up more when he makes eye contact with her.

"I'm always going to be here for you, Camille," Adam whispers with a shaky voice.

"Because... I love...you." Adam struggles with his own shyness to confess his feelings. His heart races up as his face warms up, Camille can feel his shaky arms holding her.

Adam swallows the huge knot in his throat and pushes himself to the next step. Pressure by the distant look in her eyes. Adam can't ignore the fact that every time he looks at Camille, she looks like she fading away right before his eyes. That something simple like holding her, like caress her cheeks seems to be something foreign and awkward. Although he's aware of Camille shocked expression as she realizes what's going to happen next, Adam feels forced to remind her how close they were before. That even if he waits, Adam still feels like he's walking on thin ice, and he the more he advances the more he risks to break and fall.

He leans closer to her face, where she can't escape anymore. Camille knows that to remember her feeling for him, she needs to do the usual things. Things that had been normal for them to do, she can't make any excuses to run away, she has to re-fall in love with him again, to save him from going crazy.

"No matter what other people say, I'm always here. I'm only on your side." Adam reaffirms slowly moving forward.

Though Camille doesn't understand what he means, she's trying to get her mind ready for his approach. Closing her eyes, she waits for his lips to make contact with hers.

"Camille!" a rough but calm voice echoes in the back of her head, together with a stinging pain in the back of her head.

In the dark hole of her memory, a tall shadow with no face and no details flash forward. The voice that's somewhat recognizable but scares her, making the hair of the back of her neck stand up immediately. Abruptly pushes Adam away, her eyes widen with surprise to realize what she has done. Rejecting Adam's kiss.

Adam takes two steps back; his face shows nothing but confusion and sadness. To see her so close and feel her so far, Adam feels himself fall into the same darkness Camille has been running away from. Camille turns pale and cold, remembering that voice. The voice that comes through the water. She turns to the lake, her eyes balling fearful tears.

"Adam..." her voice trembles timidly.

The voice that follows her since she was little, that same tone that brings in the shadows and a heavy sentiment of regret. Breathing through her nose to control the pounding and regret. Camille can't find her voice to explain the unexpected action to Adam.

"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to." she apologizes with evident sincerity as a tear rolls out the corner of her eyes.

Adam can't move at all if he does, Camille will cry more. His heart aches from not having the guts to pretend not to be hurt by her rejection. Ashamed by not understanding why his girlfriend is acting the way she does.

"I'm so sorry, I need to go." Camille lets the guilt take the best of her and unconsciously she decides to run away. Adam watches her back walking away, not even once she dares to look back to him. An action that feels like a bullet right to his heart.

The evening sun starts to soften in the horizon, Adam grips his fists tightly as he tries to breathe in without any pain. Not wanting to see Camille disappear he turns to look at the lake. Focusing on holding back his frustration, he keeps on taking deep breaths as the sharp stab hits his lungs, he bends down to hold it in.

"I'm sorry too..." he consoles his broken heart.

Finally lifting his eyes to look ahead, Adam notices something in the water of the lake. Even after the endless rain, it still looks crystal blue and mysteriously deep. Hypnotized by the low rhythm of the surface as the breeze caress it. Adam flinches back as he catches the glimpse of something dashing inside. Something way too big to be a fish.

"That must be the biggest fish I've ever seen," he looks up at the sky and smiles a heartbreaking smile.

"Camille..." a voice cries within the water, but Adam can't hear it at all.
