Decision

Camille can't seem to find a coherent reason for the way her savior appeared out of the blue. The magic around him, the way he spoke, even with the darkness of the night, she could clearly see an ethereal light surrounding him. Worthy of an angel, just like a guardian angel he appeared to save her from a monster.

"An angel..." Camille whispers to herself. Although submerging into the pleasant memory of this mysterious man, also brings back the nightmares of Steve.

Camille curls up under her blanket to ease the goosebumps rising on her skin. Traumatized by the way Steve looked at her, he has always been violent and distraught. But this time his madness was beyond psychotic, his heart has turned dark, and cold.

The bruises on her face are still visual, her body is still sore. Not wanting to hear people making up stories about it, Camille has opted to skip school and any reason to step out of the house, at least until she can gain back her beaten confidence. Quietly sitting in the living room, blankly staring at the tv. Every day gets more difficult to pretend to be normal when inside she breaks with sadness, a deep sadness that she can't explain. She sighs, flopping herself under the fluffiness of her cover, closing her eyes to keep her frustration hidden.

"How are you feeling?" her mother comes to snuggle with her, taking advantage that it's only the two of them in the house.

Handing her a cup of tea, Camelia smiles tenderly at her daughter. Letting the hot steam tickle her nose, Camille smiles back at her mother. There's that hint of remorse in her tired eyes. Remorse for staying with a monster like Steve for so long. The guilt Camelia carries within herself is more visible now than it has ever been. She knew from the very beginning that to test Camille's resistance, this had to happen, that someone more powerful got to choose this destiny for her, and all she's been able to do is watch and heal her wounds, pretend like she never knew anything.

"I'm sorry," Camelia apologizes to her beloved daughter, to sacrifice her innocence for a greater good is the worst test of endurance in her life. Camille gazes into her mother's eyes, there's something she's not telling her. Something that could help her see what's tearing up her brain.

"I'm fine, mom," Camille reassures her mother. Understanding that she also has a secret, Camille opts to ignore what she sees in Camelia's eyes.

Blankly staring at her cup of tea that shows her blurry reflection, she looks exhausted and confused. Disturbed by the darkness slowly approaching her from behind, the voices in her head every time get louder and louder.

"I really believe you'll be..." Camille murmurs. She has known all along how special Camille is, and where she has been the time she disappeared.

Camelia feels hopeless at the sight of her daughter losing the meaning of her life; seeing how she slowly fades away into somewhere she could never bring her back from, but she has to let her go. This time was long coming, the moment Camille finds out who and what she really is, it's closer than ever. She sighs and hugs her tightly.

"What is it?" Camille asks noticing Camelia's emotional heartbeat. A feeling only a mother who's losing her daughter can feel.

"Mom..." Camille murmurs trying to ignore the sharp stab in her throat.

Noticing the strange sentiment in her mother's touch as she caresses her face. The light of her eyes seems to hold painful tears, desperation, and pain screaming deeply in her soul.

"My Camille, I'm so sorry for not being strong enough to fight them... But I know you are stronger than they are than we would ever be..." Camelia says fixing her daughter's hair. Eyes full of love and compassion, she smiles the saddest smile Camille has ever seen, carving her chest.

"You're so special, Camille. So special that, this world is not meant for you..." she whispers with a heavy tone of guilt and eyes so deeply proud. Camille says nothing.

"The place where you belong is a place where you can spread your wings, where the light follows you and you shine even more, brighter than the stars and the sun altogether. A place where the darkness fears you instead..." Camelia sucks in the knot in her throat to think that she has to let her daughter free.

"I don't understand, mom," Camille finally opens her mouth, even more, confused than before. Although she wants to question her, she can't. Something in her eyes makes her stay quiet and patiently wait.

"I can't explain it to you... I lost my right to fight a long time ago, but all I can say to you is...." she stops to take in a deep breath, her eyes turn distant.

"When the time comes, I don't want you to hold back because of me, Jordan or Adam..." Camelia warns her with remorse.

"We're just part of your life but, we're not the meaning of your life, Camille." she pauses, wielding her hands together.

"The time is coming, you're finding your path or your path is finding you. Just promise me that you won't look back. Don't hesitate. Forget about me, about Jordan, and your friends. Move forward. Even if you see the darkness coming to you, you are light." Camelia adds more pressure to her hold of Camille's small hands.

"You're brighter than anything, shine through the darkness, and even her will fear you," Camelia fights to stay strong, soon Camille will have to make the choice and if she feels tied down to this world, she won't make the right decision.

Camille feels the secret in the words, whatever Camelia is hiding, she's hinting it out. Camille nods trying to ease her mother's troubles but deep down she knows, that indeed something is slowly waking up inside. Camelia sighs in relief, giving the girl a gentle smile that doesn't touch her eyes, taking in a deep breath.

"Look, take this," Camelia places a mysterious necklace on her hands. A carefully polish braid that holds a white glow, an antique that looks like one of a kind crystal.

"What is this?" astonished to see a strange but unique and beautiful object; A black crystal in the form of a star. A mysterious glow in the center of it shines through in purple, like her eyes.

"Wow..." holding the medallion, she can feel a strange sense of enlightenment almost like her energy has been restored. Breathing in deeply, Camille can feel her lungs spread inside alleviating her worries.

"This belonged to your father, this will protect you and guide you wherever you go," Camelia tells her and gets up from her seat trying to hide the fear of talking about a man she promised not to mention if there's never a reason too. She looks around, looking for the shadows that follow Camille.

"My father?" Camille whispers the question trying not to overwhelm her mother.

"Where is he?" she asks as her mother's teary eyes wonders beyond the window, the days are colder, but sunny after never-ending rain. In the distance, Camelia catches a glimpse of Camille's guardian.

"I wish, I knew," Camelia answers with a touch of grief. Pretending like she hasn't seen anything she turns to her daughter.

Camille has thousands of questions in her mind, but for some reason, the sadness in her mother eyes, the slight tremble of her shoulders. Camille takes the medallion and places it around her neck, under her sweater to keep the attention away from it.

"What I can tell you is that he's an amazing man, tall, gentle and he had these captivating eyes. Purple like yours..." Camellia recalls the gorgeous man that gave her the best gift of all. Her.

"Although he never got to see you. I know for sure he loves you," Camelia reassures, making Camille force an image of someone that would look like him into her brain.

"I'm sorry for not telling you the truth, Camille. Making you believe that Steve was even blood related to you. In a way, I hoped for you to hate him, maybe that would make things easier for him, for your real father." Camille's mother says trying to give her a reason for her long life lie.

"Why?" she hesitates to ask, recognizing that maybe there's something deeper about her birth. Her mother thinks for a moment.

"Just like you, he's special. Someone, who doesn't belong in this world, but I was lucky. To be chosen to have you, " she paused to turn to a puzzled Camille. Noticing that she's saying more than she's allowed, Camelia takes a deep breath and calms her broken heart.

"To have you, one of us had to sacrifice, sacrifice for a greater cause..." Camelia says, recalling a moment her life turned into nothing but a long wait.

"I have the hope to see him again, though. I wish to see him again, but that's decided only by destiny, a destiny that we hope is on your side," she says with a hopeful tone.

"A goodbye is not a sacrifice if you know someone can find happiness," Camelia tells her, noticing that Camille's guardian is ready to make a move.

Camille feels her warmth and truth, bringing her to make up her mind. To break free, to let Adam find someone better. Like her mother has done. To say goodbye to someone important to let them find real happiness.

"My dad..." Camille wonders, clenching her new treasure. She takes a deep breath with a final decision.
