30| A FIGHT IN THE SNOW

[ Chapter Thirty ]

Adelina was numb as she stumbled through the snow beside her friends. Rey kept looking back at her to make sure she was still coming, and hadn't turned around to go find her brother, and Adelina sort of liked how Rey seemed to care about her.

Adelina looked behind her to see the oscillator burning from the explosives and the x-wings trying to finish the job. She almost didn't want to make it off the planet before they blew it up, because her life felt so bleak.

Finn broke the terrible silence that had spread over the trio since they'd left the interior of the base, "The Falcon's this way." He looked at Adelina sympathetically but didn't say anything which Adelina was grateful for as she probably would have just screamed at him and neither of them deserved it.

Rey gave Adelina her hand and Adelina took it, grateful for her friend's support as they struggled over the snowy dunes and into the forest.

However, the three didn't get far as they soon encountered a figure standing in the forest. Adelina immediately recognized her brother when he turned around to face them. Her breath caught in her throat as they maintained steady eye contact before Adelina let go of Rey's hand and made a move to rush at him. But she didn't get far as Rey's hands grabbed Adelina to hold her back from her brother.

"Get out of my sight, before I kill you." Adelina growled at her brother.

Kylo Ren ignited his lightsaber, "We're not done yet."

Rey breathes heavily and pushes Adelina behind her, "You're a monster!"

Kylo Ren almost seems to smile slightly, "It's just us now. Han Solo can't save you."

Adelina grits her teeth trying to push past Rey who has her arm held out in front of her. Rey grabs her blaster and steps forward, aiming it at Kylo Ren. Adelina's eyes widen for a second but then Kylo Ren raises a hand, stopping Rey in her tracks.

Rey struggles against his power before Kylo gestures twice, once to rid Rey of her weapon, and the other to push Rey back into a tree. Rey crumples to the ground and Adelina screams before running to her friend.

Finn throws his blaster and follows Adelina, falling to the ground, "Rey. Rey. No no no."

Adelina trades glances with Finn who looks like he's about to do something stupid. Adelina shakes her head, "No. He's so much stronger than you, Finn."

Kylo Ren twirls his lightsaber in the air before approaching the trio, "TRAITOR!"

"Finn." Adelina gives him a warning look as Finn shakes with fury.

Finn stands up and pulls the lightsaber out of his pocket before igniting it. Adelina stares at him but while her brother is distracted, she yanks on Rey's arms, trying to drag her away.

"That lightsaber. It belongs to me." Kylo Ren points at the lightsaber that Finn is holding.

Finn shrugs, "Come and get it."

The two then start battling and Adelina looks away from them, determined to get her friend away from her brother. Adelina wants to help Finn as she knows for a fact that her brother is a lot stronger than Finn is. She looks down at Rey brushing the strands of hair that have come loose from her buns.

"Please wake up." Adelina pleads at Rey.

As if answering her plea, Rey opens her eyes and slowly sits up before looking at the two fighting.

"Don't." Adelina tells her before following her eyes.

Adelina watches as her brother disarms Finn of his lightsaber and then hits Finn in the back of his head with his own. Adelina growls with fury as she stands up and stalks towards her brother.

"Why don't you try using something other than your lightsaber for once?" Adelina growls.

Kylo Ren turns towards his sister, "Don't tell me you care about him? He's pathetic."

Adelina cocks her head at her brother, "Oh really? And who killed his own father just to prove something to someone who's never going to give two shits about you."

Kylo Ren growled at her and reignited his lightsaber and stalked towards his sister. Adelina's eyes widened and she reached for the lightsaber that Finn had dropped. She took a deep breath in and focused all her energy on reaching it. Luckily for her, her brother didn't notice her reaching for it.

Adelina was almost sure that she wasn't going to get it but at the last possible second the lightsaber whizzed past her brother and into Adelina's hand. Adelina was shocked and almost laughed with relief as she ignited it.

Kylo Ren stared at her in shock but Adelina merely shrugged in response before running towards him. Her brother quickly recovered and brought his own lightsaber crashing down on Adelina's. Adelina held her own, but her feet slid back in the snow. Her brother was easily a foot taller than her and was far more experienced with a lightsaber but Adelina was stronger than she or anyone knew.

Their lightsabers crashed against one another, Adelina grunting with the effort, until Kylo Ren suddenly paused and looked at her.

"Do you really think you're going to kill me, Lina?" He asked her.

Adelina took a halting step back in shock. She didn't want to kill her brother, sure, she thought she did, but he was her elder brother and as much as she hated to admit it, she loved him.

However, she growled at him, "No, but I can try." She lifted her saber up but before she could lunge at her brother he lifted his hand.

Adelina pushed against his strength with all her might but she was exhausted and he overpowered her, flying her across the snow and into a tree.

When she came to, Rey was busy fighting Kylo Ren. Adelina blinked with surprise, not understanding how Rey was using the Force, or how she was able to get the strength.

Adelina watches as her friend overpowered her brother. Rey hit his saber hard, knocking it right out of Kylo Ren's hands and into the snow. She then slashed at him again and again until eventually she struck him right across the face. Her brother stumbled back and reached out for his blade.

Adelina held her breath as she watched Rey contemplate what to do. Adelina knew that Rey could easily kill her brother, while he was unarmed but Rey backed down and instead lowered her saber.

Suddenly, the entire planet shook and the earth beneath their feet started to split apart as Rey, Finn and Adelina were separated by a huge abyss from Kylo Ren.

Rey darted through the trees towards her friends before collapsing to the ground beside them. Tears start to fill her eyes as she throws her arms around Adelina.

Adelina's arms come around her before she pulls back and stares at Rey, confused, "You didn't kill him, why not?"

Rey took a breath in, "I don't know." She shook her head.

Adelina nodded and turned to look at Finn. Rey cradled his body in her arms as the ground shook again and trees started to collapse. Adelina let out a sigh, "I really don't want to die here."

Rey let out a laugh but it came out as a sob before she looked up at the sky and smiled, "Well, you won't have to."

The Millenium Falcon rises and its lights illuminate the trio huddled on the snowy ground. Rey and Adelina's eyes fill with hope and Adelina slowly stands up, wincing at the way everything seems to blur in front of her.

"Careful." Rey slips an arm around her waist, watching as the Falcon lands so Chewie can exit the ship, "You really hit your head."

Adelina laughs as Rey helps her onto the ship and Chewie lifts Finn into his arms and follows. As soon as they get in the ship, Chewie lays Finn down on a bed and hurries back to the controls, followed by Rey and Adelina.

Chewie roars at them and Adelina smiles sadly, "Yes, Chewie. Time to go home."

The Falcon lands back on base and everyone is watching as the ramp lowers. Poe is waiting at the bottom, looking like he has just sprinted from his x-wing. His eyes dart around as he looks for Adelina, wanting to make sure she was okay.

Chewie exits the ship first holding Finn, and medical personnel hurry over to take him. Poe moves towards them, before he notices Adelina and Rey exiting the ship after. Rey and Adelina are holding each other up, only barely, as the weight of their grief seems to be pushing them down.

Adelina's eyes find Poe's and her eyes seem to light up upon noticing that he's okay. She smiles sadly at him and he smiles back at her but neither make a move towards each other so he just gives her a grin before running off after the medical officers.

Adelina sighs and then looks for her mom who emerges from the crowd and looks hopefully at her daughter. Adelina shakes her head before walking slowly towards her, still holding onto Rey. Leia opens her arms to the two girls and they collapse into her arms.

After what seems like ages, Adelina pulls away from her mom and spots her best friend in the crowd. Nara slowly approaches her and looks around wildly, "Where's your dad?"

Adelina shakes her head, struggling to wipe her tears from her face, "He's dead, Nar."

Nara pulls Adelina to her and wraps her arms around her, "What happened?"

"He asked Ben to come home and instead, Ben killed him." Adelina buried her head in Nara's shoulder, "It was horrible. I wanted to kill Ben for it, but I couldn't."

"That's understandable." Nara sighed, "Even though he's done horrible things, you still love him."

"But why?" Adelina asked, "Why can't I just move on?"

"Because you're human." Nara answered simply.
