22| POISONOUS GAS?

[ Chapter Twenty-Two ]

❝Oh that? That was nothing.❞

Rey unbuckles her seatbelt and immediately jumps up before lowering her hand to Adelina to help her up. Adelina glances down at her side and winces seeing the dried blood.

"You should clean that. Or it'll get worse." Rey pointed down at her side.

Adelina nodded, "Yeah, I know, been a bit busy though."

Adelina hurries after Rey into the corridor and they run into Finn who has climbed up from the turret. Adelina grins at him, "Nice shooting!"

"That was some flying. Both of you." Finn told them.

"Thanks!" Adelina and Rey said at the same time, grinning at him.

"Where did you learn to do that?" Finn asked Rey.

"I don't know." Rey shook her head.

"No one trained you?" Finn asked.

"I mean. I've flown some ships but I've never left the planet." Rey responded and looked at Adelina, "But she's an awesome co-pilot and probably a million times better than me at flying."

Adelina scoffed, "Oh that? That was nothing."

"You're being modest." Rey grinned at her.

Adelina shrugs as Rey and Finn start talking at once until BB-8 rolls up to them and interrupts. Rey kneels down to the droid while Adelina leans against the wall, pressing her arm into her side.

"You're okay. He's with the Resistance. And besides, you know her." Rey gestured towards them.

"BB-8, we'll be fine." Adelina smiles at the droid.

"They're going to get you home. We all will." Rey promises BB-8, "Wait. I don't know your name."

"Finn. What's yours?" Finn asks her.

"I'm Rey." Rey smiles.

Finn swallows and then says, "Rey..." However, before he can continue his sentence, steam bursts out from the grate.

The three turn towards the sound.

"I can fix it." Adelina says but then steps forward and winces.

Rey catches Adelina before she falls and shakes her head at her, "No, we've got this. Go, I'm sure there's a first aid kit around her somewhere."

"Okay fine. But if you need anything, holler." Adelina tells her as Rey lets go of her and races towards the grate.

"Finn. Help me with this!" Rey calls.

Adelina leaves the two to deal with the problem before she limps off towards one of the ships bathrooms. Adelina hadn't been on this ship in years though she had the blueprint basically etched into her mind. She'd spent so much time learning to fly on this ship when she was a young girl, alongside her father and sometimes her mother and brother. So many happy memories were associated with this ship but some of those memories were now soiled with the fact that her brother worked for the first order and her father had disappeared and didn't want to come home.

Once Adelina found the ship bathroom that she knew would have a first aid kit in it and she shut the door behind her. She was desperate for a shower but she knew she didn't have enough time so she just grabbed a paper towel that she found underneath the sink and wetted it before wiping her face and arms and then washing her hands. She leaned her head then over the sink letting her hair fall under the stream of water. She attempted to clean it with the small amount of soap that she found on the counter, even though it was definitely many years old and probably wouldn't do a great job of cleansing her. She scrubbed her hair and then rinsed it the best she could in the sink before she rung it out over the sink and let it fall in wet strands along her back.

Then, she reached for the first aid kit and opened it, letting out a breath when she found it fully stocked. She grabbed a couple bandages, wet wipes, medication or anything else she needed to clean her wound. Adelina thanked her mom for teaching her how to clean and dress a wound because otherwise she'd have no idea how to help herself now.

She took the makeshift bandage off of her wound and examined her wound. It had stopped bleeding so she cleaned wiped around the wound with a wet wipe and then cleaned it. Once it was clean, she applied the appropriate medicine and then wrapped a bandage tightly around her wound.

Once it was done, she threw her wet hair into a braid and grabbed the first aid kit. She left the small bathroom and went to a small closet, fishing out a backpack. She put the kit in the backpack as well as a change of clothes and some water and provisions. Since she'd lost all the supplies she and Poe had brung to Jakku she tried to replenish the best she could. She still had her jacket which she dropped in the bag.

Adelina made her way back to her friends until suddenly the entire ship's power goes out. Adelina looks up nervously before jogging over to where Rey and Finn were fixing the ship.

"What's going on? What did you guys do?" Adelina asks.

"Why do you assume we did something?" Rey asks.

Adelina shrugs, "We need to get the power back on."

"Are you okay?" Rey asks her, "You look better."

"Yeah, I'll be okay." Adelina nods and starts towards the cockpit.

Adelina slides into the pilot seat before Rey can and examines the controls, "It's not good. Someone's locked onto us. All controls are overridden."

Rey and Finn exchange a glance and then Finn awkwardly climbs up onto the console trying to see out the window.

"Ow. Get off." Rey screams as he pushes her aside, "Do you see anything."

"Oh no." Finn responds.

"What?" Adelina asks before she spots a massive freighter appearing above them.

They are completely powerless as they can't pull away from the freighter ship. Adelina exchanges glances with Rey as they are both waiting for Finn to figure out what kind of ship it is.

Finn slumps down in the seat behind Adelina and Adelina quickly turns around and stares at him, "What is it?"

"It's the First Order." Finn responds.

"Holy sith." Adelina curses, dropping her head in her hands.

"Well. What do we do? There must be something." Rey asks them.

Adelina is too exhausted to come up with a plan so she immediately looks at Finn who luckily looks like he just came up with an idea.

"Wait. You said poisonous gas." Finn looks at Rey.

"Poisonous gas?" Adelina asks.

"Yeah, but I fixed that." Rey responds.

"Can you unfix it?" Finn asks her.

Adelina's eyes dart to Rey in the co-pilot seat. She puzzles over it for a moment and then her eyes light up and she immediately jumps out of her seat. Finn and Adelina follow closely behind her. Adelina grabs the gas masks handing them to her companions before Finn jumps down into the grate that they were previously fixing.

"Come on, BB-8." Rey motions to the droid who rolls over.

"I got him!" Finn insists and Rey hands the droid to him before Rey jumps in herself.

Rey holds a hand out to Adelina and pulls her down safely. Adelina quickly tucks the backpack in beside her and puts her gas mask over her face as Rey pulls the grate back over them and then gets ready to unfix the gas.

"Do you think this will work on the stormtroopers?" Rey asks them.

"Yeah. Their masks filter out smoke, not toxins." Finn responds before he pushes the grate up slightly to peer out.

"What the hell are you doing?" Adelina whispers towards him.

"Looking." Finn responds, "Hurry."

Adelina quickly moves to Rey and helps her unfix the poisonous gas, "We're hurrying."

The lights come back on and there's a bunch of noise outside. Adelina and Rey exchange glances before Adelina pulls Finn down below with them. Adelina holds her breath as she hears voices. Rey drops a wrench and the footsteps come towards them.

The grate above them slides open and Adelina's hand shoots out to grab Rey's, who squeezes her hand in return. The three train their eyes at the grate above as a man's figure comes into view, holding a blaster at them.

Adelina's eyes widen in surprise and she gulps.

"Daddy?"
