Catching Up
*2000*
It's been three years since Ginny Cook's world changed. In the beginning, it had been the worst moments of her life. But now that she's on the other side, she is glad that things worked out the way they did.
She was the daughter of a well respected farmer in a small mid-western town. Larry Cook was like a king to this small town and no other farmer did anything without consulting with him first.
Ginny also had two sisters named Rose and Caroline. Rose was the middle child, but unfortunately passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. Caroline is the youngest, and was brainwashed by their father, telling her that her sisters treated him badly.
Since telling Caroline that her sisters treated him badly, it led to her suing her sisters over their fathers farm.
However it was Larry who decided to retire from being a farmer and wanted to split his farm amongst his three daughters.
But Caroline told her father she didn't want to be apart of it because her life was in Des Moines. She became a lawyer because she just wanted a different life from her older sisters and being a farmer wasn't what she wanted.
So, Rose and Ginny were then put in charge of the farm with the help of their husbands. Larry agreed to it and was happy with his decision. The farm was thriving and things were working out.
However, Larry's mind started to deteriorate when he was not being as active as he used to be. Slowly he started to think that Ginny and Rose wanted to just lock him away in his home and keep him there. But that was further from the truth.
They tried to help him out more and be there for him. Even trying to include him more in whatever they did. But in doing so Larry just pushed them away further. In turn, Caroline started to truly believe her sisters abandoned their father and were abusing him.
Even the whole town had turned against Rose and Ginny due to the lies Larry told everyone.
Also, a huge secret was revealed to Ginny by Rose. A secret that Ginny had suppressed for many many years due to how traumatic it was.
Rose never forgot what happened but had kept it in for so long that when things were going on with the farm lawsuit, she just exploded and told Ginny.
Turns out, that their father had sexually abused them when they were younger. Larry wasn't able to do the same to Caroline because Ginny and Rose protected her from him.
After finding this out, Ginny started to remember from certain triggers. Once was when she was hiding in a dressing room at a local clothing store.
She was hiding because her father and sister Caroline walked into the clothing store shopping for a new tie. She didn't want them to see her before their court date.
She overheard her father remembering details from when Caroline was younger. Telling Caroline if she remembers certain things from her childhood. She said no. Turns out, he was remembering things that had to do with Rose. It was then that Ginny had a memory pop into her head.
Another time was when she was in her childhood bedroom making the bed. She laid down for a second thinking, and suddenly she remembered her father coming into her bedroom late at night each night he was intoxicated. Which was often. Ginny then realized that Rose was telling the truth.
After the lawsuit, Ginny and Rose won the case and stayed with the farm. But something snapped in Ginny. She and her husband Ty were arguing after they had gotten home and she turned to him and said, "I want $1,000."
Ty gave it to her in confusion at first and she then left. She sold part of her farm to Ty. She didn't care anymore. She knew she needed to leave and not look back.
Now here she was three years later; she was now guardian to her nieces Pamela and Linda. They are now 17 and 15 years old. It was now two years since her sister Rose passed away.
The farm had been sold and the left over money that Ginny got which wasn't a lot, but enough to help her move away from the state she grew up in.
It was a huge change but Ginny decided to move to California. It was a scary change in her life but a very much welcome change.
Ginny bought a three bedroom house in a nice neighborhood. It wasn't a big house but it was comfortable for the three of them.
The house also had two bathrooms; one in Ginny's room since she had the master bedroom then one bathroom in the hallway between Pamela's and Linda's bedroom.
It had a nice kitchen where Ginny cooked meals for them. Then there was a dining room and living room. They had a nice front and backyard.
Ginny worked as a waitress since leaving her small town. It didn't pay much, but she loved it because she got to meet new people and it brought her out of shell.
It was hard however because she had her nieces to raise and to make sure they were okay. Once they settled in their new home, Ginny had to find the best schools.
Pamela and Linda now attend high school and they adjusted well to this new school.
Before leaving their small town, Rose had sent her daughters away to boarding school. She had a fear that Larry would do the same to her daughters that he did to her and Ginny.
While taking care of her nieces and working, Ginny would spend her spare time writing.
She began to write as a way to purge herself of what she was feeling. A way to get out what she had once suppressed. She then started to just write down her life's story.
She wrote about her childhood, of the abuse from her father, the whole lawsuit, the man she had fallen in love with and had an affair with and so on.
Yes she was exhausted from her everyday life, but writing things is what helped her get through her pain.
Now, when she had started writing, it wasn't her attention to publish what she wrote. But the more she thought about it, the more she felt the need to do so.
She felt that maybe this book could help someone who was abused or is being abused. Maybe someone could relate to some parts of the book and just show them that they are not alone.
By a stroke of luck, Ginny's neighbor and friend happened to be a well known book publisher and an author herself. Her name was Lana Winters.
Lana had noticed Ginny writing one day and asked if she could read it. Ginny trusted Lana so, she allowed her to do so.
Lana was in tears reading all that Ginny had been through in her life. She thought that this would make a great book to read and asked Ginny if she would ever think of publishing it.
Ginny said no at first but with some convincing, Ginny agreed to publish her book. Some names were changed, especially the town name she once lived in but everything else remained the same.
"Aunt Ginny!" Pamela exclaimed, "Hold your book up and smile!"
Ginny turned around and smiled while holding her newly published book in her hands. Pamela took a photo of her aunt to remember this exciting moment in her aunts life.
After taking the photo, Pamela and Linda rushed over to Ginny and gave her a big hug. They were in a back room of a well known bookstore waiting so Ginny could promote her new book.
"Congratulations Auntie." Linda said, feeling so proud of her aunt.
"Thank you, sweet girl." Ginny replied hugging her nieces tightly.
"Ginny, it's time." Lana said with a smile.
"Oh gosh." Ginny said nervously, "Is there actually people out there?"
Ginny didn't think anyone would be interested in her book. But seeing the reassuring smile on Lana's face helped her not to worry.
"Why don't come out and see?" Lana said as she opened the door for Ginny.
"Good luck, Aunt Ginny." Pamela and Linda said in unison.
"Thank you, girls." Ginny said giving them quick hugs before turning and walking out of the room.
Ginny gasped when she turned a corner and saw about fifty or sixty people lined up in the assigned area for her meet and greet.
Sure it wasn't a lot of people, but to Ginny it felt like a thousand and for that she was truly grateful.
This book is dedicated to JessicaLangeLove for always helping me out and hyping me up when I need it. Lol thanks for convincing to do this story.
Wasn't going to write a new story because I have a million other ones I need to finish.😂😭 BUT I decided to go for it.
A Thousand Acres is a movie I wished to see more of. Especially Ginny. Because she deserved so much more! So here's my story of what I think happens to Ginny after she left her one thousand acres.
Hope you all enjoy!
