The Domino Effect (Quon)
(For the sake of this one shot, Quon moves to the high school that you, Xander and Yugo go to, Ukyo isn't in this because it doesn't match up with the BBB timeline).
You stared at the clock with barely concealed anticipation, fingernails drumming out a steady rhythm across the top of your desk. Thankfully, the clock was mounted on the wall above the whiteboard, so it was easy enough to pretend like you were paying attention in the final few minutes of your English lesson. Your eyes gave a sidelong glance to Xander, sitting beside you, only to see that your best friend's eyes were already focused upon you. When your eyes met, neither of you looked away, rather, in unison, the narrowed in unspoken challenge.
Your phone buzzed twice in your pocket, letting you know that there were only three more short minutes to go until the bell rang for lunch. Discreetly, you began slipping your pens and pencils back inside your pencil case, zipping in up quietly so your teacher wouldn't notice. Another faint zipping reached your ears, your teeth ground together harshly when you realised that Xander was taking a cue from you and beginning to pack away his own things.
It was only a matter of time before the bell rang for lunch, and then, the race would be on.
It all first started a few months ago. You were lucky enough to attend school with the people who were also your best friends outside of school, Xander, who had been your best friend since he had moved to your primary school in first year, and Yugo. There was also Quon, the newest addition to your little group, having transferred to your high school at the beginning of the year. Xander had been the one tasked with showing him around, and the other boy had quickly become ensconced in your friendship group, and more recently, had become your boyfriend. The four of you were great friends, and you all had an intense rivalry when it came to certain things such as Beyblade, but lately, there was a new thing that you had all grown competitive over.
The canteen line, or more accurately, who could get there first. It had begun during a lunch break, you and Yugo had been sitting under the tree that had become your spot way back in your first year of high school, it was where you always sat. The two of you had just come from PE together, Xander and Quon had math at the time that you and Yugo did your sports lesson, and because your class got out earlier, you were the first ones there. It was like any other normal day, until your best friend and your boyfriend got into earshot, and to your surprise, they were arguing.
Flashback
'You two okay?' Yugo asked Quon and Xander warily, you closed the book you had been reading after sliding a bookmark in between the pages to keep your place, fixing two of your boys with a look of concern.
'We're fine,' Quon promised, sitting down next to where you were leaning against the tree, his hand finding yours.
'We will be,' Xander corrected him, putting his bag down and sitting across from Quon, glaring. 'Just as soon as Quon here admits that I won.'
'Won what?' You frowned, your gaze flicking between them, wondering what it was they could have been competing over so fiercely for in mathematics.
'I was first in line at the canteen today and I got there before anyone else.' Quon supplied. 'Xander is under the impression that it was him.'
'It was me,' Xander exploded with a hiss. He looked so offended in that moment, and you couldn't help but to shake your head at the intense rivalry that had sprung up between them. It was pretty amusing most days, but then again, all four of you were prone to getting all fired up over different things that each other did, and it wasn't uncommon for you all to be seen competing over something or other on any given day.
'You got there first, but I got my food first,' Xander continued in his vehement argument. 'That means I am first.'
'Your logic is seriously flawed,' Quon sniffed.
'Seriously?' Yugo looked at him sceptically. You too felt slightly incredulous at the way this was going back and forth. You also knew that you'd be hearing about this for days to come, so you decided to put an end to the entire issue then and there.
'Guys, come on, this isn't a competition.' You admonished them both, Yugo nodding his head in sage agreement. 'But if it was...'
You moved your school bag with a devilish grin, to reveal the cardboard tray you had purchased from the canteen, straight after your sports lesson had ended, only then it had had food in it. Now, there were only a few stray crumbs left as evidence of your finished lunch. Yugo facepalmed.
'I would have won! See it and weep ladies, see it and weep. I got there first and I got my food before either of you.'
'You're mean Y/n,' Xander rolled his eyes.
'Okay, if we're really doing this, then that means I was first, because I was waiting there for you.' Yugo piped up.
'You weren't even in line,' you waved your hand dismissively. 'You didn't buy anything either.'
'What ever helps you sleep at night,' he shook his head.
'Wait, so who won?' Quon wondered.
'Me.' The other three of you answered in unison.
All of you glared.
End flashback
After that, it was on like Donkey Kong. Every single day from that point, provided someone had money to spend, it was a race to see you could get to the canteen first to be the undisputed winner. To most people, it was a stupid game the four of you played, to the four of you, it was more than just a competition.
It was honour.
Your phone buzzed again. Thirty seconds left. You put your pencil case and book into your bag and began zipping it up, so did Xander.
The bell rang.
You were out of your seat in a flash, bag over shoulder, sprinting out of the classroom. You heard a thump from somewhere behind you as you bolted down the hall, presumably Xander as he ran into the door you had slammed behind you. Your name was cried out, and you cackled maniacally as you ran, parkour it off the lockers that lined the hallway like that dude at the beginning of High School Musical Two. You burst out of the English block, springing over a bench and slowing down as you reached the quad.
There was no running in the quad, it was a spoken rule and an unspoken law throughout your school, even by the faculty. Deputy Principal Davies was standing there in the middle, arching an eyebrow at you. You nodded at him, trying to seem casual, and began to speed walk as quickly as you could without it being considered running.
There was a booming laugh that could only belong to Xander when you were already half-way across, you scowled upon remembering the small fact that your best friend had longer legs than you did. You walked as quickly as you could, but Xander just strode past you, still laughing.
"See you there, short stuff."
Internally you were tackling him to the ground. The deputy caught your eye, you sent him a pleading gaze, and with a pointed look toward Xander, who was just about off the quadrangle, the man turned around. Your eyes lit up at the opportunity, and again, you were sprinting, pushing Xander into a well placed flower bush as you went.
"HOW'S THAT FOR SHORT STUFF?!" You roared, and finally, that canteen came into sight.
Your heart dropped into your stomach when you saw Yugo running from the direction of the library. He was only ten, maybe fifteen paces ahead of you, but you didn't know if you could catch him in time. You shook your head stubbornly and piled on the speed, you weren't going down without a fight.
"YUGO!" You shouted, he looked at you from over his shoulder and you noticed his eyes widen. You grinned, covering part of the distance, hope alighting inside of you.
"QUON!" Yugo called out warningly. You weren't going to fall for that, and refused to look behind you to see if your boyfriend had somehow appeared. You doubted it, the science labs were at the other end of the school, putting Quon at a huge disadvantage, unless he'd gotten out early, there was no way that he could-
"Y/N!" Your boyfriend's voice yelled, scaring the hell out of you. You made a noise of surprise but you didn't slow down.
"XANDER!" Xander bellowed randomly.
Then suddenly, the aforementioned red head was blurring past you and overtaking Yugo, despite your head start, advantage, and cheating. You didn't want to believe it. Digging deep and nearly tripping over in the process, you stumbled past Yugo, but it wasn't enough, and you watched on helplessly as Xander slowed down to a jog and stepped neatly in front of the still closed canteen windows, beginning a line.
You stopped behind him, coming up in second place. Xander scowl down at you, and you pouted up at him. All of that hard work, all of that planning, cheating and running... all of it meant nothing now.
"A flower bush, really?"
"All's fair in canteen and war."
"I hate you guys," Yugo panted from behind you.
"LOOK OUT!" Quon shouted, skidding to a halt too slowly to have any effect whatsoever. Yugo's widened eyes were the next warning you received, but you reacted too slowly to avoid him falling into you after your boyfriend had crashed into him. You bumped into Xander just as the canteen windows opened, he clipped his head on said window and you fell against the counter just as your best friend went down like a very large sack potatoes, a look of surprise on his face like it was no man's business.
"Hi," you smiled winningly at the very surprised canteen lady, who looked at the four of you helplessly, as though she didn't quite know what to do with herself or how to react to the situation.
"Y/n L/n," you told her, stepping carefully over Xander's body. "I have a lunch order."
"Right," she nodded, retrieving it for you. You gave her the correct amount of money and thanked her, getting out of line so that Yugo could go next. You stood beside Quon, who wrapped an arm around your waist and pressed a proud kiss to your forehead.
"I win." You beamed angelically.
"Cheat!" Xander gasped.
"All is fair in canteen and war." You repeated wisely.
Not much Quon x Reader interaction, but I still had a blast writing this one. Hope you all enjoyed one of the sillier things I've written, and if you haven't guessed, this idea comes from my dating Quon imagine that was the last chapter I published.
Also, I copied a line from another chapter I've written before, although I feel like most people who have read my stories will have found it. :)
