Thirty-Five

Before morning had dawned, it was still storming heavily.

Kara had been awoken by the sounds of what she believed to be hail hitting the windows. Damn… What time is it?, she pondered to herself as she rubbed her orange eyes.

It was still completely dark in the room.

Greyson fidgeted in his sleep, shivering.

Kara looked over to her young son after sitting up, her expression falling a little. Kara sighed before taking her jacket off and wrapping it around Greyson. “Shh…” She whispered to the little sleeping boy who was whimpering in his slumber. “You're okay. You'll be okay.”

Kara continued to cradle Greyson close to her, protectively until he began to stir.

Greyson's little yellow eyes opened. “Ai…” he whispered, in a frightened tone.

Shadows continued to cast themselves through the room and over Kara's face, making it hard for Greyson to properly see her.

“Hey, hey… You're okay…” Kara whispered to the little boy. “Äiti's got you.”

Hail hit the window once again, making Greyson start to cry.

“No, no… You're alright,” Kara replied to Greyson, trying to calm him down, but to no avail. “Grey… Please.”

Greyson cried harder, making Kara panic.

Shit. What the hell do I do?, Kara pondered to herself, her heart racing quickly.

Leslie slowly began to stir in her bed when she heard Greyson's sobs. She groaned softly, sitting up in her bed and opening her eyes. She fixed her hair before looking over in Kara and Greyson's direction.

“Shh…” Kara responded, still not gaining any progress.

Leslie's heart sank when she heard Kara's son cry. She slowly got out of her bed and made her way over to the window where Greyson and Kara currently resided. “Hey,” Leslie whispered, quietly. “Is he okay?”

Kara replied back in a worried tone while shaking her head. “No… I think the storm spooked him… The hail specifically.” She paused for a second before continuing. “...he just started crying and I can't get him to stop.” Panic edged in Kara's voice.

Leslie felt bad for Kara—-she pitied her a little. She sighed. “Here… Give him to me.”

Kara hesitated for a moment as Greyson continued to cry. Am I seriously contemplating giving my own son to a witch? She sighed. Dammit… Okay, okay… What's the worst that could happen? “Here,” Kara said softly, holding a crying Greyson out to Leslie.

Leslie took the little boy gently in her arms, holding him close to her chest. “Shhh…” She whispered to him before gently rocking him back and forth.

Kara nervously watched Leslie take care of her son.

Leslie then started to softly sing a lullaby to Greyson as she continued to rock him.

Slowly, Greyson began to calm down—-his crying ceased and his tiny eyelids began to flutter.

     “That's it…” Leslie stroked the little boy's hair. “That's it… You're okay… Everything's all okay.”

Kara watched Leslie handle Greyson in awe.

“Let's get you somewhere comfortable, hm?” Leslie continued to rock Greyson back and forth before she headed over to the closet and opened the door. “Care to give me a hand?” The witch called out to Kara.

Kara nodded, still slightly dazed—-she got up and approached the closet, helping pull out some sort of makeshift crib which was set close to Leslie's bed.

Leslie hummed gently as she laid Greyson in it, who had already fallen asleep again. She set Greyson's stuffed tiger right by him before taking his blanket and tucking him in. Leslie gently tapped the little boy's blanket as Kara closed the closet door. “Sleep tight, kiddo.”

Leslie then exhaled, softly as she slowly turned away from the crib that Greyson was currently sleeping in. She rubbed her red eyes, yawning a little.

“How'd you do that?” Kara asked, curiously.

    “Magic,” Leslie said, shrugging.

“Why'd you do that?” Kara questioned. “You had no obligation to Greyson…”

The two women's tones remained quiet as they were trying to be considerate of the three children who were sleeping nearby.

Leslie shrugged yet again, exhaling as she did. “It was maternal instinct I guess… I heard him crying and I felt like I had to do something.”

“You were really good at calming him down,” Kara replied. “...and I was terrible compared to you.”

“How long have you been raising him?” Leslie then asked the demon.

“Well,” Kara began to reply. “...he's almost two years old… But, I've been taking care of him for less than a week.”

“Is his other parent no longer in the picture?” Leslie asked Kara, curiously.

Kara nodded. “Yeah… She wanted nothing to do with him… She gave me sole custody of him.”

“Oh.” Leslie exhaled. “Um… Well, you'll get better at taking care of him you know…”

Kara raised an eyebrow. “Is that so?” She fell silent for a moment. “...I'm not as good as you are.”

Leslie snorted a little at Kara's comment. “Well, yeah… Of course not. I've had practice. I've been raising my son for three years compared to your couple of days…”

“Yeah… You're definitely more experienced,” Kara whispered, looking down to the ground for a moment before letting her gaze meet Leslie's once more.

Leslie spoke up again, “But you know… I wasn't that prepared for Tomi… He was very… unexpected to say the least.” She shifted her weight onto her other leg. “I'd probably be a whole hell of a lot more prepared now than I was then.”

Silence fell over the room for a moment—-and for that moment, the only sounds were that of Greyson gently sleeping and the storm raging outside.

“Do…” Kara began to say. “Do you want any more children? Is that something you're planning?” I hope that's not a terrible thing to ask, Kara began to think to herself. She's just so good with children… And, she said she'd be “more prepared now”.

“Uh…” Leslie began before trailing off, seemingly deep in thought.

Oh crap, Kara's mind began when she didn't immediately get an answer back. I offended her, didn't I? She bit her lip a little, holding her breath.

“It hasn't been a big thought on mind in the past,” Leslie began to answer Kara's question. “But… Tomi did bring up wanting a younger sibling…” She laughed a little. “He tried to write a letter to a stork… Requesting it bring him a little brother.”

Kara giggled. That's adorable, the demon thought to herself. “What happened afterwards?” She then asked the witch.

“I explained to him that's not how it works,” Leslie replied. “Though, I didn't go overly into a lot of detail on what the actual process was. I mean… he's too young to hear that.”

“True,” Kara responded. A civil conversation with her… Maybe this won't be so bad.

“Anyway,” Leslie said, clearly trying to push things back on topic. “Tomi's requests have made me think about it… And…” She paused, exhaling. “Lately… Now I can't get that idea out of my mind. So, yeah… I plan to have another kid sometime in the future.”

“I'm sure your son will be happy to hear that,” Kara said.

“What about you?” Leslie asked Kara. “Just one kid for you… or more than one?”

Kara shrugged. “I don't know…” She exhaled. “I mean, when I was a young child, I always saw myself having this huge family… But now that I have a kid… I don't know if I'll be able to handle more than one.”

Oh… The demon wanted to have multiple children in the past? Shocker, Leslie thought to herself before making a comment out loud. “Maybe you just need to find someone to spend your time with… Someone who could help you out… You swap out on who takes care of the kids.”

“Yeah, I guess,” Kara replied as hail continued to hit the side of the stone tower. “Though, if I really went for kids, I'd have to find someone first… And I don't tend to have good luck in that field,” she said, awkwardly.

The demon's got no love life and sex life? Ha. I didn't see that one coming, Leslie thought to herself. “I guess we have that in common then, Kara,” the witch replied.

Kara blinked a few times in disbelief at Leslie's words. “We do?” She can't be serious, can she?, Kara began to ponder. No, no. She's a pretty witch—-of course she has to be joking. I mean, who wouldn't want to date her? Who would be funny enough to reject her? She's joking; she has to be.

Leslie nodded. “Yeah. We do…” She sighed. “I don't have a lot of luck either when it comes to the romance department.”

Kara exhaled very slowly. So… She wasn't kidding then.

“I shouldn't be surprised though… really,” Leslie started to say. “I put myself into my studies far too often and put romance on the back burner.” She sucked in a breath. “Plus… I'm greyromantic… So, I'm more of a ‘no romo' kind of person anyway.”

    “So, you're aro-spec?” Kara confirmed.

Leslie nodded. “On the aromantic spectrum, yes.”

I'm on the asexual spectrum… That thought is what Kara so desperately wanted to say to Leslie, but she kept quiet, deciding against it; instead, Kara asked a question. “So, do you see yourself in a relationship in the future?”

Leslie shook her head in response to that question. “No. It's not very likely… I can see a few flings here and there… Mostly one night stands… But no relationship.”

    “Oh,” Kara replied.

Leslie yawned again. “I… I should get some sleep.”

Kara nodded. “Yeah… Sleep's important. Don't let me keep you.”

Leslie turned away from Kara, heading back over to her bed and passing out very quickly.

Kara sighed to herself before heading back over to the open space near the window and laying down on the cold, stone floor. The demon's gaze cruised over to Leslie's sleeping form for a bit. She smiled faintly, closing her eyes. Kara knew that they'd go back to hating each other in the morning, but for now, their conversation would just play on repeat in Kara's mind.
