Chapter 13
(Guys, if you're reading this, please comment? I could really use some feedback!)
Hermione's POV
"What would a couple of death-eaters want from me?" Hagrid was saying.
"We don't know yet," Harry told him.
"But all I have is meh hut," he replied and I thought carefully.
"It has to be something in this hut then," I said. "Something that might help them."
"Hagrid, do you....still get things from Knockturn Alley?" Ron asked him and he coughed.
"Only when it's needed," he replied.
"Maybe you got something from Borgin and Burke's?"
"I'm sure if I got something from there, it would be easily noticeable, Hermione.," he said, scratching his beard.
"Unless they already took it from you," Ginny supplied. She was right. If they had made him buy something from there, they could have taken it already. We didn't have anything to go on right now.
"How about your hut? Does it have anything they could use right now?" Harry asked, gesturing around the small hut. Hagrid snorted.
"I have Fang," he said. "And some baby blast-ended skrewts." At the last part, all of us grimaced. I remembered the skrewts all too well.
"You still have the skrewts?" Ron asked incredulously. Hagrid chuckled.
"Course I do."
"Hagrid, they are dangerous," I pointed out and he gave a small chuckle again.
"Nah," he said. "They're only misunderstood. If yer take good care of 'em, they'll be very cooperative." As he busied himself with putting three mugs away, Ron muttered.
"Has he forgotten third and fourth year?" Harry laughed and he joined in.
Soon, a slightly acrid smell filled the small hut and Ron tried to signal us to leave that instant. I rolled my eyes at his behavior and motioned for everyone to keep sitting, but after another thirty seconds, I wished we had taken his advice. The rock-cakes were ready. Harry and Ginny were glaring at me from across the table.
"Sorry," I mouthed, but their expressions were stony.
"Here ya go," Hagrid said, beaming down at us. "Fresh from the oven."
"They look good, Hagrid," I commented, just to postpone eating them. Hagrid grinned broadly.
"The recipe's a secret," he told me, ruffling my hair.
"What's the secret ingredient?" Ginny asked, joining my attempts at stalling for time.
"Marble. Because they are hard," Ron muttered and Harry snorted.
"Could be actual rocks too," he whispered and both of them chuckled.
"Wouldn't be a secret if I told ya, now would it?" Hagrid laughed.
"They look really warm,"
i said cautiously.
"Course they do," Hagrid replied. "They're fresh out of the oven. Now eat up before they go cold, you lot."
We bit into them at the same time and I winced as my teeth came in contact with the hard bit. Harry winced and so did Ron. Hagrid hummed under his breath as he prepared more. Fang was resting his head on Harry's knee and I noticed that he seemed content there as Harry absentmindedly scratched him between the ears. Now that I thought about it, Harry did have a thing with animals. Crookshanks seemed to love him too.
"He's bean acting kinda strange lately," Hagrid told us, referring to Fang who was still snoring in Harry's lap.
"Really?" I asked. "How's that?" He scratched his chin thoughtfully.
"He doesn't bark a lot anymore and he just lies around the hut a lot," he said. "I take him out, but he just wants to come back all the time."
That was odd. Fang was always barking and running around Hagrid. He went everywhere Hagrid went.
Ron snorted loudly. "Maybe this will be like Norbert turning out to be Nortbertia." At this, all of us burst out laughing, and Fang had four pairs of eyes glued to him. Hagrid cleared his throat.
"It's not that," he said. "I already took care of that. No, this is something else. I've even started borrowing books on how to take care of dogs from the library, and I never used to need then."
"Maybe he's just ill," I pointed. Hagrid sighed.
"I dunno."
"Hagrid, you got a mirror!" Ron exclaimed. We looked at where he was pointing and indeed there was a mirror taped up on the wall next to Hagrid's bed. It had not been there before either.
"You never had a mirror there before," Harry said to him and he coughed.
"Well, I don't recall getting it, but I gotta say, it looks good and it has helped a lot."
"Of course you don't remember getting it," Ginny laughed. "Is this about Madame Maxine?" Harry chuckled and patted him on the back. Hagrid's face went beet-red.
"I don't remember getting it," he told us again, and even I laughed. He was smiling under his mustache.
"We better go," I said, glancing at the clock on the wall. "It's almost ten and we need to pack too." Ginny kicked me under the table and that was when I realized that our going away was to be a secret. No one was supposed to know about it, not even Hagrid. His eyebrows shot up immediately.
"Pack?" he demanded. "Are yeh going somewhere?" I sighed in defeat. We had to tell him. Harry nodded.
"Hagrid," he said. "You can't tell anyone." Hagrid shook his head.
"I'm not letting you risk your lives again. You lot deserve a normal year. Stay here. Enjoy yourselves for once." He was looking at all of us sadly, his beetle-black eyes were filled with sadness. He cared about us.
"We need to go, Hagrid," I said. "It's the only way we can win this thing." We explained everything to him; about Harry having a sister, about her living in America, and about us needing to bring her here to defeat Greyback. When we were done, his eyes went wide.
"Blimey, Harry," he said. "A sister!" Harry gulped.
"Looks like it," he said. Hagrid smiled.
"How does nobody know sbout her though?"
"McGonnagal didn't tell us that," he answered. "But she is the key to ending this thing." Hagrid stroked his beard.
"So how long will you be gone?" he asked us.
"Six months," replied Harry. Hagrid looked worried now.
"Owl me every week, alright?" Harry nodded. "And take care of yourselves. I don't think you'll be able to just bring her home. There has to be some challenge. So be careful."
He enveloped us into a bear hug that nearly suffocated us, and I could have sworn I heard him sniffle a little.
"Got all yer supplies?"
"Yeah," I told him. He smiled weakly.
"Don't cause trouble there."
"You know we won't," said Ron.
"I'm serious," said Hagrid. "Over here, people know who you are, Harry. Over there, they're going to treat yer like a muggle. Not a famous wizard."
Harry nodded and he engulfed us in another hug before letting go. Ginny and I put the invisibility hats back on and Harry threw his cloak over himself and Ron. We made our way outside and as we started going back towards the castle, I noticed Hagrid standing outside his hut, waving at us, a sad smile plastered on his face.
