Chapter 12
(Quick note: okay so in the last chapter, Ron says that Hagrid is still hung up about Fang. That is because I just thought Fang died in the war (yeah I know stupid mistake) But I just checked Google and it says that the book doesn't say whether he died. Soo that is why Fang is here in this chapter)
Harry's POV
When I went up to get my invisibility cloak, the dormitory was empty. Seamus and Dean were probably still in the Great Hall and I had seen Neville eating at the Gryffindor table. Quickly retrieving the cloak from my trunk, I trudged back downstairs.
"All four of us won't be able to fit in there," I pointed out. Hermione beamed, taking something out of her bag. When I looked closely, I noticed that they were....hats?
"Those are hats, right?" I asked her, just to make sure. She chuckled.
"Yeah, Harry. Hats," she told me. At our blank expressions, her eyebrows knitted together. "Really? You lot don't know where I got these?"
"Dobby?" Ginny laughed. Hermione rolled her eyes.
"Er, a shop?" I asked.
"The library?" Ron said and we turned to look at him incredulously.
"How would I find hats in a library, Ronald?" Hermione chastised and his ears turned scarlet. She rolled her eyes. "You remember Fred and George telling us about making invisibility artifacts? They said they made invisibility gloves and hats."
Now that I thought about it, they had told us that back in our sixth year when we went to look at the shop. I remembered them taking us to the back-room and pointing them out.
"When did you get them though?" Ron asked.
"I owled George last week. These could really come in handy." We all nodded in agreement.
"Do they work fine?" Ginny asked from her spot on the window-seat. Hermione frowned.
"I think so," she replied. "I mean they did say that the spell wore off after a while. But you have to soak them in water to charge them. I don't remember George telling me how long it would last though."
"We'll have to risk it," I said. "Come on."
Hermione and Ginny put the hats on and they worked instantly. We could no longer see them. I threw the cloak over Ron and myself and we made our way towards the portrait hole.
People were now making their way out of the Great Hall towards their common rooms now so the corridors were a little crowded and excited chatter could be heard all around. No one knew the severity of the situation yet; that Fenir Greyback could actually take over, and that the death-eaters could actually come to Hogwarts again.
We reached the double oak doors and quietly made our way out into the grounds. I had seen Mr Filtch lurking by the Entrance Hall earlier, but he hadn't noticed us going out. The grounds were empty and covered in darkness. The moon was almost full and its silvery light was shinning down on us.
Hagrid's hut loomed up ahead, and we could see smoke rising from the chimney. Trudging down the small hill towards his house, I felt the cool wind whip my face. We knocked before the door was opened and Hagrid stood there in a flowered apron. The sight was actually funny.
"Who's there?" he demanded, looking around the door. Hermione and Ginny slipped their hats off and I took the cloak off Ron and I. His face broke into a huge smile and he beamed down at us. It really had been ages since we saw each other. Before we knew it, he had engulfed all four of us in a bone-cracking hug.
"Hagrid," Hermione wheezed. "It's good to see you."
"Hi, Hagrid," I panted from under his arm. He quickly let us go and Ron sucked in s huge breath of air.
"You...need to know that we're shorter than you," he grinned and Hagrid chuckled, ushering us into the hut.
"How long has it been?" he asked and we looked down in embarrassment. It really had been a while since we had last seen him.
"We're sorry, Hagrid," Hermione said and he grunted.
"It's alright," he said, brushing it off. "Sit down. I was just making a pot of tea."
Hagrid's hut smelled of his rock-cakes. I guessed he was making them at that moment. For all our sakes, I hoped we didn't stick around in time for them to finnish.
The hut was untidy too. There were clothes, pots and pans lying everywhere and small pile of eggshells could be seen in the corner too.
Clearly, he needed to clean.
We were greeted by Fang as soon as we entered and we leaned down to scratch him behind the ears. Barking excitedly, he ran around us in circles for a good minute before Hagrid calmed him down and then he resorted to laying his head down on my lap.
Hagrid put the water to boil and sat down. "So how are yeh doing?"he asked.
"We're...er...good," I told him hesitantly, not knowing if he had actually heard about us starting Dumbledore's Army again.
"So, Ron, did Hermione forgive you? From the looks of it, she did," he said, motioning towards their intertwined hands. Ron went scarlet. I cleared my throat. We didn't haveo a lot of time.
"Hagrid," I began. "You remember when Ron came to see you, right?" He nodded, looking surprised.
"Course I do," he told us.
"Er, well, did I seem alright when I came?" Ron asked him and his eyebrows shot up.
"Wouldn't you know if you were not okay when you last came to my hut?" he asked him. "What's this about anyway?"
We looked between us and came to a decision. "Hagrid," I began. "A lot happened over the past couple of months." He chuckled.
"Of course it did, with you lot back here, something was bound to happen. Of course, I wouldn't know about it, seeing as no one came and told me."
"Touche," Ron muttered under his breath. But Hagrid was smiling so I figured he was not that angry.
"There were two death-eaters at the school in the past months," Hermione got to the point. Hagrid almost dropped the mugs he had just gotten out of a cupboard. We were sitting around his small table.
"What do you mean?" he exclaimed.
"They were disguised as students," I told him. "Two girls. They were in our year."
His eyebrows knitted together. "That's impossible! Voldemort is gone. Why would they want to do something now?"
Hermione took over. "No, there is a new leader. Fenir Greyback."
"The werewolf," Hagrid breathed.
"Yeah," said Ron. "Those deatheaters put me under a curse. I didn't know what I was doing. I was only doing what they wanted me to. All we know is that they wanted to tear us apart. "
"So when you came to visit me...."
"I was still under the spell," Ron told him. Hagrid blinked.
"But you seemed perfectly normal to me when you came," he said thoughtfully.
I looked at Hermione. Our theory was correct then. He had no idea what actually happened. "Hagrid," said Hermione tentatively. "What do remember about that day?" His brows creased again.
"I was just sitting, making a pot of tea, and there was a knock. I went to answer it and it was Ron and a girl. But I remember her leaving as soon as Ron came in. So I made us a pot of tea and we sat down. Ron was talking about how he wanted to apologize to you, Hermione. He said he knew he was doing something wrong. But then...after that, I dunno. I think you left." He looked at Ron.
"Yeah, but do you remember what exactly I said? Other than...you know.... apologizing to Hermione?"
He looked puzzled and thought hard before saying, "I don't remember. It was a month ago, right?" We nodded. "That's s long time."
But it wasn't. It just proved that our other assumption was correct too. His memory had been tampered with. Suddenly, I remembered something he had just said.
"Wait, you said that there was a girl with him?" I asked Hagrid and Ron's ears perked up.
"Well, yeah," he answered. "He wasn't alone. I think it was girl with him. She had dark hair and was sorta tall." We fell silent. Then, Hermione said what we were all thinking.
"Abby."
Dark hair, tall form, and he suspected it was a girl. Who else could Ron have been with? While he was under the spell, he had been awfully on edge, so nobody really wanted to be near him, except Abby and Vanessa.
"Try to remember what we talked about, Hagrid," Ron tried. But he shook his head.
"I don't think I can. Every time I think about it, there's something that is blocking it," he said. Then his eyes narrowed. "Why would there be a thing blocking it?"
"Because they messed with your memory," Ginny explained. "Ron probably was still under the curse when he came to you. Only they knew that if you saw that, you would definitely tell someone. So they made you believe he wasn't under any spell."
"Why would they do that?" Hagrid asked, his voice laced with worry now. We fell silent. Nobody knew why they would have done it. We didn't even know why they had let Ron come to visit Hagrid. They were controlling him the whole time. If they wanted to, they could have stopped him from going to his hut.
That was it! They did want something. "They might have wanted something from you, Hagrid. Something that could help them."
