Chapter One
Hi, my name is Endora II. Yes there is one before me. My dear old grandma. Oh dear, I said old and grandma in the same sentence. Please don't tell her I said that. The first and last time I called her grandma, to her face that is, I was turned into a sheep. I baa and baa my heart out for forty nine minutes. I would know since I counted each and every minute, until my mother realized it was me and turned me back.
I'm rambling but I can't help it. You see when the clock strikes twelve, when the cuckoo bird sings midnight, it will be my birthday. Not just any birthday, it is THE birthday. In just a few magical hours I, Endora Stephens, aka Endora II, will become sixteen. I will finally get my magical powers!
"Endora sweetheart, please stop stomping your feet you will break the floor."
"Ma, I'm dancing!" I protested.
"Ha," she said, "well, can you dance a bit lighter dear you'll wake your father."
I froze. My eyes bulged out of their sockets. My father, he hated magic; he had banned my mother from using it in the house. I had to be good or he wouldn't allow me to go to magic school. I fell flat on my bed with a loud thud.
"Endoraaa," my mum hissed from the door. Samantha, my mother - the witch, so seemingly delicate, an all around American woman, at first glance. No ordinary person would guess she was so much more than a human.
"Sorry," I said pouting.
I watched my mother as she walked in my room. "So?" She asked.
"I'm so excited. Ma I have some questions..." and without giving her a second to answer yes or no I added, "how's magic school? How long before I can cast my own spell? Are there gonna be boys there as well?" I took in a deep breath and waited anxiously.
"Magic school is, with one word whimsical. You focus on your studies young lady," she said.
"No boys hmm?" I was disappointed.
"Who said no boys?" Mother said with one eyebrow raised.
"You did," I protested.
"I did not," she teased as she pinched my nose. "Don't even think about the word boys in front of your father. Did you practice your nose wiggle today?"
"For half an hour," I answered grinning at my mum's beautiful fair face. I wished I looked like my mother, my older sister Tabitha was a carbon copy of our mother, but unfortunately for me I had inherited my father's looks, much to my grandma's dismay if I may add. I wasn't the prettiest girl on the block but I was presentable, truth be told I liked the way I looked but most importantly I was a witch! That alone gave such a high.
"How's Tessa?" My mother asked.
"Disappointed." I said thinking of how my best friend reacted when she found out we wouldn't be going to the same school anymore.
"Why don't you invite her over for dinner?" My mother nudged me.
"Do you think she will come?" We hadn't spoken to each other for two whole days, that's forty eight hours - not that I'm counting.
"Endora Aelia Stephens, call your friend immediately and ask her to come over." She said. I knew it was an order the second I heard my middle name being used.
"I will." I said and picked up my phone to call my best friend. After chatting for about ten minutes I left my bedroom and went downstairs to inform my mother that Tessa would be coming over for dinner.
◇◇◇◇
Dinner time came by without me realizing it. I had spend most of the day reading the spell book my grandma had given me as an early birthday present. The door to my room burst open with a bang. I jumped up from my chair in surprise and turned to see that Tessa was grinning at me.
"Hey! I missed you." I said as I run to her and hugged her tightly.
"Air. Must. Breathe." She managed to say.
"Sorry," I said offering her a toothy smile.
"What you got there?" She asked pointing at the book in my hand.
"O-oh, that's nothing," I lied.
"E, you are lying." She stated.
I was never a good liar, I blushed and tried to think of a believable excuse.
"It's just some reading I'm trying to catch up on for the new school tomorrow." There, that was not exactly a lie. I needed to learn so many things about the witchcraft world. All the other kids in the school were much more advanced than me. Kids that were born to both parents that were witches had their powers from an early age. Me and the likes of me that were half breed we got our powers once we turned sixteen.
"Just for the record, I am still mad at you for switching schools," she said. I winced at her words.
"Endoraaaa, Tessaaaa. Girls, dinner will be served in five minutes." My mother shouted from below the stairs.
Mother made my favourite food, spinach lasagne. We ate and I was sitting at the edge of my seat waiting for my presents.
I opened up my parents present first. It was a diary, a pink diary with unicorns on the cover. Oh, how I loved pink and unicorns - that was one of the few girly things I indulged.
"How I wished that our house was filled with unicorns!" I said as I hugged my new diary. "What's wrong?" I asked as I saw my friend sitting across the table. Her mouth dropped open and her eyes were almost popping out of their sockets. I turned to the direction they were all staring. I did a double take and nearly broke my neck from the speed, "Whaaa.." Our living room was filled with unicorns standing about. I immediately sought out my mother's eyes pleading.
I panicked and blurted out, "I wish Tessa didn't see this." A shopping paper bag covered Tessa's head. I face palmed myself. Tessa pulled out the bag from her head. "What the fugde is going on here?"
"Nothing dear." My mother said.
"What do you mean nothing, there were at least five unicorns in the living room a minute ago." Hesitantly I turned my head towards our living room and saw that the unicorns had disappeared. I breathed easier now. I knew my friend she would not let this drop, she would bug me until she fully understood what happened.
My mother took action, she froze Tessa. I panicked and started running around the living room. I tripped over the small coffee table and fell flat on my face.
I peeled myself off of the carpet, fixed my skirt that had hiked up my thighs and casually walked over the dinning room table as if nothing had happened.
"Well dear, it looks like your powers manifested before midnight. I must have mixed up the time you were born with your sisters." Mother said with furrowed eyebrows.
"Jeez Louize you think?" My father said ironically.
"Don't get your panties in a twist Darrin, I'll fix this." She snapped at him.
"What do I do?" I asked still in shock that I revealed my powers to a mere mortal, even though said mortal was my best friend.
"I will have to do a rewind. Darrin dear, I know you hate this but you won't remember a thing." She said and walked over and gave him a peck on the lips.
"Maaa, that's gross." I complained.
She laughed and winked at me, "Now, Endora please don't wish anything this time."
I watched as my mother twirled her fingers and a gush of wind took over the living room.
I found myself reopening my parents present. "Oh, this is so amazing! Thanks Dad! Thanks Ma!" I said and willed myself not to wish for anything.
"Open mine, open mine." Tessa yelled.
I smiled and took the small box that Tessa had clearly wrapped by herself judging from the state of the wrapping paper. It was a charm bracelet that had on it two girl figures. "I love it. I love you Tess," I said and run to the other side of the table to give her a hug.
We all sat down on the dining room table, my birthday cake in front of me with all sixteen candles lit up - I counted to be sure.
Mother froze Tessa and Daddy. "Remember dear, blow out your candles but don't make a wish!" She warned once more.
"I know!" I said irritated that she kept warning me.
"Ready?" My mother said, I nodded and my mother unfroze them.
Happy birthday to you,
happy birthday to you,
happy birthday dear Endoraaa,
happy birthday to you!
Tessa was looking unaware of what had happened. Great, I thought, I just got my powers as a witch and I couldn't share it with my best friend.
◇◇◇◇
"This is your new school." My mother announced as she pulled up in front of a bookstore.
"Where?"
"There dear, just go through the doors love. Have a great day," she said literally kicking me out of the car.
I got out, smoothed over my clothes for the hundredth time this morning and opened the glass door of the beat down bookstore. Students crowded the corridors, the place looked humongous once you stepped inside. Bags, books you name it were floating above people's heads. A book flew right at me and knocked me on my knees. A red faced boy run over and picked up the book. "Sorry, didn't see you," he yelled as he dashed off to the opposite direction.
Mentally I took a big breath and got up on my feet. This was the beginning of my magical life. As my mother says 'Bewitched or not to bewitched.'
