Glosary - Beware the Chains
*Since this glosary explains most of the lore, it is also filled with spoilers. I advice the readers to use it as a tool to remember concepts they might have forgotten or might not have understood within the story, then proceed with the story. Readers who have finished the book may read this Glosary in its entirety without fear of getting spoiled.
Intelligent Species (Level 9 or higher)
1.- Humans:
· Average height: 1.70 m.
· Common colors: Brown, peach, wheat.
· Affinity for magic: Medium high
· Diet: Omnivores
· World of origin: Unknown
Relatively popular species, of the ninth level of intelligence. They come from various worlds. Many call them "humas" as an abbreviation, though this is an informal term that some in higher social strata may take as offensive.
Notable races/cultures:
- Brikas: Humans with enormous strength. The strength is not always passed on to new generations, but is almost always passed on to daughters, which is why there are many more females than males. Consequently, the Word "brika" has a female connotation, since seeing a male brika is very rare for those who have not visited their home world.
- Motherians: Humans from Mother.
2.- Nonis
· Average height: 2.10 m
· Common colors: Red, orange, yellow.
· Affinity for magic: Low
· Diet: Omnivores
· World of origin: Noniv'as
Large, usually red-skinned beings with horns on their heads. Their blood is yellow. The nonis are on average 2.1 meters tall, although there can be great differences in height between them, with some reaching 3 meters. Although they are one of the species of the ninth level of intelligence, they tend to resort to violence and brute force more than other species. Through the ages, their empire has expanded across hundreds of worlds throughout the Great Web, allowing them to acquire new technologies.
The nonis respect physical strength and show their respect for the strongest by attacking them. Despite their violent practices, they can easily organize themselves to fight battles against common enemies.
Notable races/cultures:
- Red nonis: These are the most common nonis. They comprise the vast majority of the noni population.
- Orange nonis: Unlike red nonis, orange nonis are shorter, similar in size to a tall human. Also, they might look less muscular, but they tend to have greater strength and endurance than ordinary nonis.
3.- Nagas:
· Average height: 5.00 m (length).
· Common colors: Green, yellow, gray.
· Affinity for magic: Low
· Diet: Carnivores
· World of origin: Escavela
Snake people. They have skin covered with scales, two arms and a tail. Some races have termal vision. They smell the air by sticking out their tongue.
4.- Sirivis:
· Average height: 2.50 m
· Common colors: Green, wheat, gray.
· Affinity for magic: Medium
· Diet: Omnivorous
· World of origin: Agranimus
Sirivis are tall and slender. They are not usually very violent, although there are some warrior tribes. Several live in tribes, several of these tribes are nomadic, though others have had to adapt to the many empires of the Great Web of worlds and have been forced to stay in one place. Most of the sirivis that do not form part of a tribe, live integrated within cultures where other species predominate, such as the vole empire.
5.- Picos:
· Average height: 1.60 m
· Common colors: All colors.
· Affinity for magic: Medium high
· Diet: Omnivorous
· World of origin: Castema
Bird people. They have beaks instead of mouths, retractable wings and claws. Their feathers can have various colors and they do not have genitalia, but reproduce through the cloaca, which is a single hole between the legs through which they also discharge their waste. What many people do not know about picos is that they are not one species, but a whole family of species. That's why there are picos of various sizes, colors and different characteristics. "Pico" is a way of referring to all feathered individuals, adopted by mammalian species, which are the predominant ones in the Great Web of worlds.
6.- Vole:
· Average height: 1.65 m
· Common colors: Blue, violet, light blue.
· Affinity for magic: High
· Diet: Carnivores
· World of origin: Volpui
Volir in singular, vole in plural. They are thinner than other species. Carnivores. They have large, pointed ears on the sides of their heads. They are one of the most prevalent species in the Great Web of worlds and one of the longest-lived; they develop into adults at a similar age to humans, but age more slowly. Their life expectancy is around 120 years, although many manage to reach 150 years.
7.- Fufos
· Average height: 0.90 m
· Common colors: Dark blue, black.
· Affinity for magic: Medium high.
· Diet: Herbivores.
· World of origin: Spopaeta.
Small, dark-skinned people with large eyes and hands. They do not have the vocal cords to communicate well with other species, but have their own language. They are tougher than they look.
8.- Luminis:
· Average height: 0.85 m
· Common colors: All colors.
· Affinity for magic: The best.
· Diet: No consensus, but some believe they feed on light.
· World of origin: Unknown.
They are the only species of intelligence level 10. They have large heads and small bodies. They look like humanoid children. They can use magic and grant it to individuals of other species who have minimal ability to wield it. They can use telepathy and communicate with several beings at once, but a long conversation with a lumini can exhaust a level 9 individual. They have no genitalia or reproductive systems; no one knows for sure how lumini are born, since they can appear out of nowhere and become invisible at will. They can heal the wounds of animals and people around them, and even prevent some tragedies. They can also answer questions that would be impossible for a person, but sometimes they can be somewhat cryptic in the way they answer or down right refuse.
9.- Judges
Judges are not a species, they are not even animals or plants, nor do they have defined bodies; sometimes they can have a specific form, then change it as they please. They can be a cloud, invisible space, a statue or a body of water.
Almost nothing is known about judges, only that they have been in the universe for a long time. They do not usually engage with matters of level 9 species, although mages have emerged who claim to have conversed with one.
They are believed to be even more intelligent than the lumini, though no one is sure if "intelligence" means anything at that level.

He fed on souls for a long time and came to erect an entire tower from them. Many warriors went to meet him, asking for his strength, but Brontes killed them all to devour their souls, since the newly dead are the best source of souls. He existed in this way, until Liliana and Erica appeared on his land.
After that moment, he anchored himself to Liliana's chest and became her munima, acting as a scythe whenever she needed to defend herself. Brontes allows her to cut whatever she wants or put to sleep anyone she pierces with her blade. Places
*Order is world - country - city/town/place of interest
Mother (world):
· Sky: Light Blue
· Earth: Brown
· Sea: Blue
· Flora: Mainly green
· Sun: Red
· Moons: 1, white.
Planet that spent a long time isolated from the Great Web of worlds. It is the home of the main characters. Its population consists entirely of humans and their cultures are not very advanced. Until they joined the Great Web of worlds in the year 54,068, their nations did not know about magic, monsters or other intelligent species.
Chialla (country):
Chialla is the home country of the protagonists. It is a humble nation that not many people in the world placed on the map until the bridge was opened that brought the noni empire and led to the Invasion.
Santa Glora (city):
City where the first bridge between Nudo and Mother arises. Liliana and Arturo are from Santa Glora. Erica lived there for a time when she was a girl, though she remembers nothing of that period.
Brandia (country):
Headquarters of Mother's united nations.
Tistriva (city):
City where the headquarters of Mother's united nations is located.
Nudo (world):
· Heaven: Violet
· Earth: Violet
· Sea: Red
· Flora: Mainly blue
· Sun: Blue
· Moons: 3
Nudo is separated between the noni empire and the vole empire, with some special places that are not officially part of any empire. It is a world ravaged by all kinds of monsters, but it is also the one with the largest number of bridges connecting to other worlds in the entire Web of worlds.
The Noni Empire
Noradima (country)
Noradima is one of the largest countries of Nudo and also the heart of the Noni Empire. It is where Primanoni, the capital, is located and where the First resides. It is a country of great wealth, where there are laws that protect the (physically) strong. It allows the possession of slaves. It has a disproportionate population of noni compared to other species.
As the countries of the noni empire tend to cover huge terrains, Noradima has a lot of landscapes; deserts spread everywhere, snowy mountains, coasts and forests.
Bivifera (city):
Port city of Noradima. During the events of the book, the crivia Fir'non attends a carnaval in there. It is a large and dense city, with several skyscrapers.
Bril'ore (town)
Town founded by humans in Nudo, originating from the world Bril'at. It was invaded by nonis decades before the events of the book. As a result, many native people ended up as slaves in Nudo. Gradually, these people fled their captors or gained their freedom and gathered at that point to help each other. It is currently infested with territis.
Kintorra (town)
A small town in the mountains. It is relatively close to the hidden mansion.
Kuhimolarg (city):
Located between Bivifera and Primanoni. It is a relatively small city, located between the foothills of mountains. One of the main attractions is Amilel, a lumini that meditates on a small waterfall in a natural park. It is near a village that was struck down by territis.
Mansion lost in the mountains
Among the snowy mountains of Noradima, built on one of the highest peaks, is an abandoned mansion. Lucifer used it as a hideout for some reason.
Primanoni (city)
Capital of Noradima and thus the heart of the Noni Empire. It is also the home of the First Noni: Tur'non Rialal; in the center it has a castle with a tower a hundred stories high. It is the largest, densest and busiest city in the entire empire.
Saz (city)
A city bordering Pimia, which is on the other side of the boundary between Noradima and Kervel. It is surrounded by lush forests.
Vergherel (city):
Vergherel is the first city where slaves captured in Mother arrive. It has a center of slaves and a problem with scrutarajs in the surroundings. It is located in the middle of the desert.
Kervel (country)
Kervel is a country of various vast forests, extensive mountain ranges and generally a cold climate. Unlike Noradima, it has a more diverse population.
Tonror Mountain Range
Mountain range with extreme temperatures, strong winds and huge, eternally snow-capped peaks.
Hun'ngortemmel's Shakma
Appears to be a hut, but in truth it is the soul palace of a deadly munima that turns his prey into dolls (when they refuse to play with him).
Kivishor (city)
Port city. It has a small mage center and an island a short distance from the coast.
Krunvir (city)
Small city in a basin between icy mountains. It is nearby the Ruins of Ramnusia, a historical site.
Oxeoden (city)
Small city located among the forested mountains of Kervel.
Pimia (city)
A city bordering Saz, which is on the other side of the border between Noradima and Kervel. It is surrounded by lush forests.
Ruins of Ramnusia (historical site)
Ancient city inhabited by a people now lost to time. It is surrounded by snowy mountains, it snows constantly. In the center there is a castle, probably the home of the ruler at the time.
Tentorrí (village):
Almost abandoned village, hidden in the mountains of Kervel, near a closed source of timitio. There is an inn still standing, not much else.
The Core (?)
Heart of the Great Chains. For the vast majority of believers, it is a spiritual place, where one goes after death. However, the protagonists know that it is real and that they can get there, but they don't know how.

Chains are the power to connect two points in the universe, be they inert grounds or the hearts of people. In this way, they can form bridges between worlds and lead two people to meet. Not much else is known about the chains, only that they still hold secrets for Erica and her friends.
- Ghosts:
Ghosts, unlike the spirits that constitute the munimas, are people of flesh-and-blood. Ghost is a title given to a certain type of person who can disappear in plain sight and even make others disappear around them.
No more is known at the moment.
- Magic:
Among the types of magic (or different supernatural abilities), there is "magic" as such. To use magic, one must "open" one's mind, which requires a lumini or a powerful mage. Not just anyone can open their mind; it requires enormous prior knowledge, keen intelligence and a certain degree of natural curiosity.
Mages can modify the world around them through a mental plane, through which they move the extensions of their mind. In this way, a mage can have influence over solids, liquids, gaseous and/or energy forms such as light and electricity, among several others.
Magic is divided into two main fields: Magiorbis, which influences the surrounding world, and Magivita, which influences the body itself. Magivita can heal wounds or transform someone into an animal, among other spells.
To use both, large amounts of energy are needed, which comes from within the mage's own body. Mages are constantly hungry and are usually very thin.
Magic is the best known of the supernatural abilities within the Great Web of worlds, so much so that even the general public knows about mages and colleges of magic.
- Munimas:
These consist of spirits of long-dead people, which did not dissolve into the earth and air, but remained in one place. These spirits gradually consumed animitas, the components of souls, with which they grew to the point of forming a spectral palace called shakma. The munimas, as spirits, need to anchor themselves to a physical place to remain in the material plane. This physical place can be anything material, even a person. If a munima decides to anchor themselves to a person, they injects themselves into the body of their new host, leaving a black mark. The munima can take the form of a weapon or object of its liking and exert a certain effect on those they makes contact with. The effect depends on each munima, and therefore can vary considerably from one to another.
· In addition to this, munimas in the form of a bladed weapon can achieve a better edge than any physical weapon, since the animitas that constitute it can move, flow and constrict as much as they want, since they have no mass on the material plane. In the same way, a munima in the form of a bladed weapon can widen its blade to nullify its own edge and thus avoid harming anyone.
· A munima, since it is made of immaterial particles, can become immaterial to pass through people and things without harming them.
· Munimas, being integrated into the body of their host, can converse with the host through their souls, which the host perceives as a mental conversation.
- Nomitio:
A metamorphosis of the timitio. When a forteme reaches a certain level of timitio and demonstrates that they can protect it from fear, the timitio forms a bond with its forteme, loses the fear that bound it and thus manages to develop.
The nomitio acquires a specific color for its host forteme. It also develops the ability to separate a little from it, to levitate on their body and, perhaps more important than the others, it can cut the timitio.
- Strength of brikas and orange nonis:
For reasons as yet unknown, brikas and orange nonis are especially strong and resilient. They have no more weight than a normal person, but would seem to handle more mass than they have in their bodies.
- Timitio:
A parasite that seeks out the strongest individual within reach. It feels constant fear, so it requires someone strong and courageous with whom it feels protected. Everyone can take timitio for themselves, but if they exceed their limit, the fear of timitio will overwhelm them and transform them into a monster called territi. However, those who control it, called fortemes, can carry it from one part of their body to another with ease and shape it as they wish. In this way, the timitio can be a very versatile tool.
A forteme cannot take off its timitio by themselves. To gain timitio, one can either go to a source, which can be dangerous, or gain the timitio of another forteme. To win it, a person must face a forteme and defeat them in fair combat. What is considered "fair" depends on the timitio itself, but they usually measure physical strength above all else. If the victor of a forteme does not claim the timitio, the parasite will return to the loser's body after a while.
Bestiary
Earth lizard (No official name):
A species of reptile that can dig holes in the ground and jump on its prey as it passes nearby.
Flying fish (No official name):
A type of fish that can take flight from the water and cover great distances in the air. They are a pest in some port cities.
Furgil:
Small animal (about the size of a cat), big-headed, hexapod and covered with hairy scales. It is a common type of pet in Nudo
Mole Monster (No official name):
Large creatures, from two to six meters tall. They have short legs, huge claws and long whiskers that allow them to easily burrow underground. They sometimes make traps for their prey.
Octopus fish (No official name):
Huge monster, long like a snake, with hundreds of fangs and ten powerful tentacles with spines coming out of its neck. It usually inhabits the open sea.
Robots:
Automated machines that perform a specific function. They have a metallic body that resembles that of level 9 beings, although they do not have an intelligence advanced enough to hold a conversation.
Rock golem:
Creature made of rocks. It may look like any mound until it starts moving. Its size can vary a lot; it ranges from 2 to 50 meters. Its body shape and number of limbs can also vary; some have several legs, some have many arms, some have no head. An enraged golem can be considered a natural disaster from which one can only flee.
Scrutaraj:
Insect with an elongated body, twelve legs and five pincers with a powerful clamping force. They are almost as large as a donkey.
Territi:
Monsters created when a person or animal is seized by timitio. Their body does not die, but becomes completely covered in the parasite. Their mind is lost to fear and they go insane. Their limbs atrophy over time and they end up being able to move only because of the parasite. The timitio layer makes them stronger and more resistant. They have large, sharp teeth and a helmet of refined timitio on their face, covering them from the nose to the nape of their neck. They can extend their claws to twice their own size and tear through almost any material. Their timitio even protects them from cuts from a knife. An effective way to deal with them is to break their timitio mask, for which there are special pulse-emitting weapons.
Technology, objects and weapons
Anti-magic helmet
A helmet that can be placed on the head of a hostile mage to nullify their magic. It is not a very common technology, nor easy to obtain.
Anti-magic surfaces
Surfaces that have been modified to avoid being controlled by mages that control solids (technically an enchanted object).
Flying ships
In Nudo and in the Web of worlds in general, it is common to see ships flying through the air. They come in various sizes; from familiars (the size of a car) to war cruisers.
Holograms
In the Web of worlds, holograms are commonplace; they are used as maps, as music players, as televisions or monitors. Virtually every device that needs to display an image has a holographic projector installed.
Hospitals and clinics
There are several very useful devices in the medical area. The technology is so advanced that it is possible to quickly and efficiently evaluate a person and treat most diseases, fractures and wounds in a short time.
Laser weapons
Firearms, but lasers. Each shot can shatter some concrete and go through several layers of flesh and bone.
Potions
Inorganic substance that quickly heals any wound. It is very potent, but for the same reason, an overconsumption can destroy the digestive system and the rest of the organs, for which there is no cure. It is not recommended to consume more than 3 per day and more than 5 per month.
Pulse Weapons
Impact weapons that generate a shockwave in the immediate space. They are used to break very hard things, such as territi armor.
Rapid Healing Device (RHD)
Common device used to disinfect and heal superficial wounds quickly. Not effective against serious wounds.
Slave collars
Since slavery is legal in many parts of Nudo and the network of worlds, one of the ways those slaves are held is with special collars. They come in different types and with different effects: some simply administer an electric shock to the slave when they move away from a specific control, but there are also those that explode, heat up to lethal temperatures or close with sharp blades. How much damage the slave comes out with for disobeying or trying to escape depends on what the owner wants.
Trains
Trains levitate on rails.
Important Concepts
- Affinity for magic:
This concept is not explicit within the story. The number of individuals who learn magic through the Great Web varies greatly from species to species, and from culture to culture. This is influenced by a myriad of factors, such as the availability of magic universities, access to education, the reputation of mages and scientists in society, and what a society expects of the various individuals in it, among many others. However, what is observed is that there are species that have many more mages than others, so it is understood that some species have "more affinity". That is, it is not an indicator of the ability to learn magic, but of the number of people who become mages within a species, compared to other species.
- "Clench your fists"
An old saying among nonis. It is a way of giving oneself courage in the face of an upcoming confrontation, especially if it looks difficult.
- Crivia
Son or daughter of one of the 12 Best Nonis.
- Great Web of worlds:
There are hundreds of thousands of worlds in space that may be connected to other worlds through bridges. The total connections of these worlds form some kind of web. Therefore, all known habitable terrain is referred to as "the Great Web of worlds".
- Khaleva
Ancient tradition in the noni empire. It consists of the leader of a group giving the first morsel to the second in command or to someone within the group he leads. This is to show that he is willing to make sacrifices, represented by his discipline to avoid swallowing the first thing in his mouth. Today it is used as a formal ceremony or in groups with very close ties.
- Levels of intelligence:
After the different intelligent species began to communicate with each other, after the first connections between worlds began to form, the need arose to refer to the group of intelligent species, and to separate them not only from insects and animals, but also from higher beings, such as luminis and judges. From there arose the idea of different levels of intelligence. Scholars and mages of the Great Web of worlds understand that intelligence is not so easily measured and that establishing "levels" of intelligence may give false information to the general population, but through the ages, for simplicity, the common people came to establish 11 levels of intelligence, going from nebulae and planets to tool-using animals and civilized species. The levels of intelligence are given as follows:
Level 1: Empty space
Level 2: Nebulae
Level 3: Black holes, stars and major celestial bodies.
Level 4: Planets and the like
Level 5: Plants and fungi
Level 6: Bacteria, viruses, and the like
Level 7: Invertebrate animals
Level 8: Vertebrate animals in general
Level 9: Humans, nonis, vole, some gods, etc.
Level 10: Luminis and other gods
Level 11: Judges
This list reflects very roughly the different levels of intelligence in the Great Web of worlds. It is not the one used in academia, but it is the one that the common people understand.
