18.- The Second Encounter

Suddenly she woke up, sitting up. She was in a chair, in a dark room. In front of her was an area illuminated by a spotlight hanging from the sky, the only one around. It took Erica a while to remember that place.

—No... it can't be— she thought.

She looked in all directions, but found no ghosts of any kind. Suddenly, muffled footsteps caught her attention. In front of her, exposing itself to the spotlight, a furry creature appeared. It was the same little monster she had protected the previous time, only it looked different; it could stand on two legs, its eyes had shrunk in proportion to its face and its body had grown, now reaching to its waist. Erica stared at him in bewilderment.

—Hello— she said, because she didn't know what else to do.

The little monster opened its mouth, but no words came out of it, just a kind of shy bark, a greeting. Erica stood up and closed the distance, but the creature was frightened and backed up a few steps. This made her a little angry.

—Come on, it's obvious I won't hurt you.

She guessed he would need to remember too, so she crouched down and held out her hand face up, as she had the previous time. The monster seemed to recognize this gesture, because it came closer again and rested its claws on Erica's hand.

Then several figures appeared around them. They were the ghosts that had attacked them last time. They circled slowly, lurking, waiting for their chance to pounce on them. However, they were not as aggressive as last time. Now they were taking some distance.

—They're still out there, huh?— the girl observed.

Then she looked at the monster, who had taken her hand and put it on his head, as if trying to simulate the previous time he had fallen asleep in her arms. The girl was touched by this gesture. She decided to pick him up and make him feel protected again. He was heavier and too big to hold completely, but he still managed to curl up and rest.

Erica sighed, somewhat worried.

—Are you always afraid?— she looked at the ghosts, which were beginning to fade away as the little monster forgot about them— I see, you're the one who creates them.

She wanted to think of a way to fix that problem. Her little monster would be doomed to live in fear of his own imagination if she didn't do something.

She sat in her chair to think. She sat there for a long while, her eyelids began to get heavy. She fell asleep again.
