Chapter 22: The Last Battle
Dedicated to destinyrene309
The Ghost landed near the wreckage of a Separatist supply ship that had been stranded on Agamar and dropped off Captain Rex, Jedi Knight Kyra Kryze-Kenobi, Ezra Bridger, Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus, and Chopper.
"You're sure you don't need help?" Captain Hera Syndulla asked from where she stood on the ramp.
"I'm sure everything will go horribly wrong," Kanan replied smugly.
"We'll be fine," Ezra assured her. "We've got three Clone Wars veterans on our team."
As the Ghost flew away, Rex put his helmet on and explained, "There was a battle here during the Clone War. This old transport's the perfect place to find weapons, ammo, maybe even some proton bombs."
As Ezra picked up the head of a fallen B-1 battle droid, he asked, "How many of these things do you think you blasted?"
Rex shrugged, "I don't know. Thousands. Probably tens of thousands. Never kept count like some of the boys."
When Ezra said that the droids did not look very dangerous, Rex turned and replied, "Listen, those droids wiped out a lot of Republic troopers. Many of them were my friends."
Once the clone captain was out of earshot, Kyra said, "Rex has been through a lot. Battles leave scars, some you can't see."
As the others caught up with Rex, he gestured for them to stay behind while he made sure the coast was clear.
"We hit the jackpot. The munitions depot is fully loaded," Rex said as he waved the rebels forward. "More proton bombs in there than we can carry."
As Ezra strolled towards the depot, Rex placed a hand on his shoulder, "Careful, kid. The droids used to protect their armories with ray shields."
As the boy began to ask what a ray shield was, one such force field activated and trapped the rebels, who were quickly surrounded by a squadron of supposedly shut-down battle droids.
"You have been captured by the Separatist Alliance. Prepare to blast the Republic invaders," a B-1 battle droid said to his comrades before instructing them to belay his previous command. "We have new orders. Incapacitate and capture. Activating stunner."
The battle droids charged the ray shield and electrocuted the rebels, knocking them out. When Kyra woke, she found herself sitting on the floor next to Rex, her hands restrained by a pair of cuffs.
She heard Rex muttering to himself, "W-where are we? Oh, no. The war, it's not over!"
When Kyra called Rex's name, he accidentally addressed her as Commander Cody, the clone trooper who had served with her father during the Clone Wars.
She placed her hand on his knee and said, "Rex, talk to me."
After a moment, his eyes focused and he replied, "I'm sorry, Commander. I thought you were someone else."
"I need you here and now, Captain. We're in the usual mess," she explained as she looked around the bridge. "I think the commander's a super tactical droid."
"Near the end of the war, Separatist droids significantly outnumbered Republic units," the tactical droid – General Kalani – said in his deep voice as he held up Rex's helmet. "By my calculations, our probability of being defeated was only twenty-three-point six percent."
"After Clone Order Sixty-Six, the whole droid army was given a shutdown command," Rex replied. "How are you even operating?"
"The Jedi betrayal ended the war for most of the galaxy. But here on Agamar, I assumed it was a Republic trick and prevented the shutdown command," Kalani explained.
"It doesn't matter how it ended, the war is over," Kyra stated. "Let us go."
"Negative, Commander. I calculate that this will be my only opportunity to end the Clone Wars as I planned, with a victory for the Separatist Alliance," Kalani replied.
"What do you want us to do? Surrender?" Rex asked exasperatedly.
Kalani shook his head, "On the contrary, I want you to fight, to prove, once and for all, whose tactical strategy was superior."
"Well, you can count me out. I'm not playing some stupid war game," Ezra claimed.
"That is correct," Kalani agreed. "You are too young to have fought in the Clone Wars, so you will be the hostage your allies must save. The 'Jedi Rescue' is a recurring scenario based on one hundred and thirty-two battles I have reviewed."
When Kyra declared that they would not willingly participate, Kalani stated, "If you will not fight, you will be terminated."
Kyra sighed and glanced at Rex and Kanan, and when they both nodded, she turned to the droid and said, "Fine, we'll do it. But if we win, Ezra goes free, and we take the proton bombs in the hangar."
Kalani accepted her terms and returned Rex's helmet before removing their restraints. Once Kanan, Rex, and Kyra made their way out of the wreckage, leaving Ezra behind, they realized that Chopper had been separated from the group.
Before they could contact the astromech, Kalani's voice came over the public-address system, "The objective of this battle is simple. You must fight your way back to my command center and capture it to free your friend."
"Rex, you've got more battlefield experience than either of us. You lead," Kyra said.
The captain nodded, "All right. Our first goal is to get inside the hangar. Kalani is a war machine, programmed to kill, and he's got the numbers and the firepower to do it. Our only chance is to be aggressive, surprise him, hopefully put him on the defensive."
"How many droids do you think he has?" Kanan asked.
Before Rex could answer, Kalani stated, "The last battle will begin now."
From the hangar came several rows of B-1 battle droids, and Rex said, "We've gotta scatter them. Use the sword and shield maneuver."
The Jedi nodded, taking their positions in front of the captain and activating the blue blades of their lightsabers, deflecting the droids' blaster shots as Rex returned fire. Since their mission to Malachor, Kyra had decided to carry her lightsaber on select missions, specifically those that were less likely to end in an Imperial altercation. Rex ordered Kanan and Kyra to duck and tossed an explosive at the droids when the Jedi did so. Battle droids fell as they were shot down by their own rounds of ammunition, others flying across the hangar when the thermal detonators exploded. The droids' numbers now decimated, Rex ordered his Jedi companions to move forward, the trio slicing through and gunning down the metal soldiers that were still standing.
When they reached the hangar without incident, Kyra surveyed the large space for reinforcements.
When the hangar appeared to be empty, she admitted, "I don't like this. The droids usually keep coming, wave after wave."
"That tactical droid has had a long time to think about this," Kanan replied. "And remember, he wants to win."
Kyra sighed and nodded as Rex led them further into the hangar, where they were confronted by a pair of droidekas, which shot at them from above as they activated their deflector shields.
"Can't advance with those Destroyers up there," Rex said, stating the obvious. "There's no way to breach their shields."
Kyra peered around the large container they were sheltering behind and spotted a crane near the bridge.
Turning to Rex and Kanan, she replied, "If I can get over there, I can use the crane to take out the catwalk."
Kanan nodded and the trio split up, Jarrus and Rex covering Kyra as she ran underneath the catwalk. She ducked behind the nearest container as another wave of B-1 battle droids entered the hangar, too distracted by the captain and Jedi Knight to notice her. When she heard a familiar grunt behind her, Kyra turned and saw Chopper rolling towards her. The astromech informed her that he had sent a distress signal, then proceeded to try and pull her towards an old Neimoidian, Sheathipede-class shuttle.
"It's a good find, Chop, but we're not leaving without the others," she said. "I need you to get the shuttle running while we finish our mission."
As Chopper went back to the vessel, Kyra reached the crane and knelt between two containers to conceal herself. Closing her eyes, she used the Force to slide the crane along its tracks, knocking the two droidekas off the catwalk and crushing the reinforcements that had arrived under the bridge. When Kyra got to her feet and moved to join Rex and Kanan, the one remaining battle droid turned and shot her point-blank in the chest. Even though the round was stopped by her chest-plate, Kyra fell to her knees and groaned, the air being forced out of her lungs.
When Rex helped Kyra to her feet and asked if she was all right, she nodded, "Yeah. Beskar always holds up."
As the trio made their way towards the command center, Kyra told the two men that Chopper had found an abandoned shuttle and was preparing the ship for takeoff in case they needed to make a quick getaway. As they ran down a corridor, two more droidekas rolled into the hallway and surrounded them. Kyra used the Force to push the first Destroyer backwards and Rex gunned it down when the deflector shield failed. As the trio turned to face the second droideka, a blaster bolt caught Rex in the helmet, knocking it off his head. The captain grabbed his helmet and threw it at the Destroyer, causing the droid to short-circuit and slump over.
"Shield overheated. That droid's too old. Just like me," Rex said as Kyra helped the captain to his feet.
They reached the command center shortly after, quickly dispatching the last few droids and shooting the blaster out of Kalani's hand. When Rex claimed that they had won the last battle, Kalani disagreed and ordered his captain to execute Ezra at gunpoint.
When Rex tried to shoot the tactical droid, Kyra stopped him and said, "We didn't win. These droids are so old, they malfunctioned. If they hadn't, we would already be dead."
"You are correct. The droid army would have prevailed," Kalani agreed. "So, technically, victory is ours."
"I didn't say that," Kyra countered. "I've never really thought about it before. The Jedi were wiped out, the clones were decommissioned, and the droid army was shut down. The Clone War ended, but why? If none of us won, who did?"
Everyone fell silent as they contemplated her question, and after a moment, Ezra answered, "The Empire."
Even as the words left his lips, an Imperial Star Destroyer, two Lambda-class shuttles, and a pair of landing craft touched down in front of the fallen Separatist ship. A pair of Gozanti class freighters deployed two AT-DP and AT-AT walkers, the pilots of the large craft aiming their cannons at the hangar.
"What are the chances your droid army can defeat the Empire?" Kyra asked as she turned towards Kalani.
"My resources are depleted. However, the droid army is not currently at war with the Galactic Empire," Kalani answered, and when Kyra expressed her doubt, the droid ordered his soldiers to analyze the threat.
When three B-1 battle droids went to greet the Imperials, they were shot down by the stormtroopers.
"I think we face a common enemy now," Kyra said as she looked at Kalani, crossing her arms over her chest when Rex protested. "Clones? Battle droids? You destroyed each other. And when you were both weak enough, the Empire took over. General, what were the Separatists fighting for?"
"According to my programming, freedom from the tyranny of the Republic," Kalani answered.
"Fighting tyranny, you say? Sounds like the Empire has always been your enemy," Kyra replied.
"You are against the Empire. I am against the Republic. Now the Republic has become the Empire. I accept your logic," Kalani said. "We are on the same side. However, as I stated, my forces are too depleted for me to plan a successful counterattack."
"Fighting insurmountable odds? We can help with that," Rex assured the tactical droid.
When Kanan suggested using the three Neimoidian shuttles to escape, Kalani argued, "A successful retreat is improbable. The walkers will destroy the ships before they escape the hangar."
"We don't have the firepower to take on walkers," Rex stated.
When Ezra suggested using the proton bombs, Kalani informed them that he did not possess a cannon to fire the shells.
After a moment, Kyra said, "We'll roll the proton bombs across the hangar and into the feet of the walkers. If the battle droids fire at Kanan, Ezra, and I, we can redirect the blaster bolts toward the shells and blow the walkers up."
"Well, this takes trust to a whole new level," Rex said with a nervous laugh.
Kyra nodded and pulled out her comlink, "Chopper, get the munitions ready to roll."
The rebels made their way down to the hangar, where Rex sighed, "One last glorious day in the Grand Army of the Republic."
As the first squadron of battle droids took their positions, Kalani admitted, "I have never attempted such a desperate strategy."
"That's why we always won," Rex claimed.
When Kalani started to argue, Kyra ordered them to focus on the present before turning to the battle droids, "Once those shells explode, get to your shuttles."
She tossed a thermal detonator at the nearest AT-DP, the concussive blast knocking several stormtroopers off their feet and distracting the Imperials. The B-1 battle droids and droidekas opened fire as the three Jedi deflected their blaster shots, blowing up two of the proton bombs and knocking over one of the AT-ATs.
"This might be our only chance. Get to the ships!" Kyra instructed, yelling over the cacophony of blasterfire.
The droids and rebels boarded the three shuttles, the first craft being shot down by the remaining AT-AT walker. Once they had broken through the upper atmosphere of Agamar, Kyra hailed Kalani, who confirmed that he and the remaining droids had survived the battle.
"It was not a victory, but a successful strategy nonetheless," Kalani acknowledged.
"No, it was a victory," Rex countered. "We all just won the Clone War, and you ended it, Kyra. A galaxy of senators couldn't do that. An army of Jedi, clones, and droids couldn't find the middle ground, but you did."
Kyra shook her head, "All I did was point out that none of us were meant to win. We couldn't."
"And we needed to hear it," Rex replied.
"Agreed. I am satisfied if you are, Captain," Kalani added, and Rex nodded. "Now, based upon this battle, I calculate that you have less than a one percent chance of staging a successful rebellion against the Empire, so this is where we must part ways."
Kyra Kryze-Kenobi saluted the tactical droid, "Roger, roger."
General Kalani returned the gesture, and when the hologram disappeared, Ezra Bridger said, "I can't imagine fighting that many droids all the time."
Rex chuckled, "Well, if you think that was bad, let me tell you about the Battle of Geonosis."
Before Captain Rex could start, Hera Syndulla hailed them, "This is Ghost to away team. We're tracking two shuttles leaving the system. Is everything all right? Did you have trouble securing the bombs?"
Kanan Jarrus grabbed his comlink and replied, "Well, the bad news is, we didn't get the bombs. The good news is, we don't need a pickup because we found a new Phantom. Tell Sabine she's gonna need a paint job."
